Description
Mas St Joseph was built in 1790 as the living quarters for the adjacent monastery and is therefore steeped in history. Much of the original monastery has now been incorporated into the peach farm, forming an additional farmhouse and various barns. The chapel is situated on the opposite side. The mas, which has beautiful views across the peach orchards to the hills and mountains beyond, still retains much of the tranquil atmosphere from its past.
On the ground floor the entrance hallway, with exposed stonework and beams, serves as a welcome area. A doorway leading off the hallway leads to a guest sitting room containing tourist information for guest use ( maps, books, pamphlets). For guest comfort there are sofas, satellite tv and a granule burner for heating in winter. Also leading off the hallway is the guest breakfast room (for chambre d'hotes guests). This room contains a drinks fridge (honour system) beyond which are French doors leading out to the Moroccan style patio/courtyard where we have an outside kitchen (with gas BBQ, plancha etc.), plus wooden garden table and chairs. On the other side of the swimming pool is our 'Moroccan corner' a comfortable seating area. Around the pool in summer, are a number of sun-beds for guests use.
A 20 minute walk with magnificent views through the peach orchards leads to the market town of Ille-sur-Tet.
The Studio
On the top floor of the Mas, with window views to both Canigou and Les Aspres is the Studio Catalan which has a mezzanine level with 2 single beds. With a couple sleeping on King size bed in the main room, the maximum sleeping capacity is 4 persons. As well as a compact shower room/WC, there is a dining table and a kitchenette with fridge, microwave/oven, induction hotplate, as well as tea and coffee making facilities. There is also a summer kitchen (including BBQ and plan) for guest use outside on the patio. Entertainment in the studio includes a flat screen TV with satellite TV a pull down cinema screen and a DVD player connected to a ceiling mounted digital projector. The room also has a small library a comfortable sofa and two very relaxing beanbags! In view of the stairs to the mezzanine, the studio is not suitable for the elderly, the disabled, or children. The low sloping roof in the mezzanine should also be taken into account with regard to access to the beds.
The studio is self-catering although breakfast can be provided at an additional cost. Picnic lunches and table d'hotes (meal options include Tapas, 2 course, 3 course or 4 course evening meals) are also available on request, Meals are prepared by Kate who has extensive experience as a chef.
