Description from owner

Description

Yá'át'ééh. (Hello)

We are a native owned off grid retreat offering guests a unique stay in our family Hogan on the Navajo Nation in the outstanding natural beauty of northern Arizona. It is our intention to provide guests a truly respectful interaction with Navajo culture. The hogan is a traditional Navajo dwelling. Traditionally they are first and foremost a home. They also serve as the center of ceremonial activity. Our hogan is outfitted with the basic necessities one will need for a pleasant stay. It is Baya's grandmother's last hogan. This experience will offer one an insight as to how the Navajo lived not terribly long ago.

We provide a "hiker's breakfast" of fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries, breakfast bars, juice, coffee & Navajo Tea.  All other meals can be sourced in town at the numerous restaurants. (we can send suggestions).

It is off grid here. Very minimalist. It will offer guests an understanding and appreciation as to how the Navajo lived not so long ago. Each tent or hogan is outfitted with the basic necessities to make for a pleasant stay - cots, padding, linens, blankets, candle lanterns, solar lights, fresh filtered drinking water, books on the Navajo, and games. There are several outhouses on the property. Also, bathing water is provided and solar heated. Guests may hike the property and view the various animals being raised here including Navajo Churro sheep, goats, horses, Great Pyrenees, Maremma Sheepdogs. We are close to all area attractions and amenities such as Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend to name a few.

*House Rules*

(1) Be respectful of the Navajo land, the people, the culture, etc.

(2) Please arrive before sunset. Reason being our property is rural/remote and off grid. We wish for you to get settled in and oriented. We do not want other guests enjoyment disrupted. Additionally we are a working ranch and it helps us to have guests check in before that time.

(3) There is absolutely NO Smoking allowed inside our tents.

(4) Alcohol is prohibited.

(5) We do not allow outside pets. We are a Navajo working sheep ranch. We've 7 working dogs on site - the Great Pyrenees and Maremma Sheepdog. All have been socialized with humans and are friendly and trained.

(6) Please take off shoes. We've provided shoe trays in each accommodation.

(7) Bedding, linens, and blankets we provide are not to be used outside the accommodation.

(8) We have a trash in/trash out policy. Meaning all trash generated by guests is to be taken with them.

(9) Make sure all outdoor fires are securely extinguished.

Response from the owner Annette, Thank you. We're sorry you found the experience less than satisfactory. You and Curtis were welcomed and greeted warmly. As I would do to all of the visitors to my home. You were never sternly admonished to not pet our dogs. I explained to you that the particular dog in question in is training as a livestock guardian and it is best to not interrupt his focus. We are a working sheep ranch and we've 7 working dogs on site. They are a big part of the ranch and visitors love them. We usually take our cues from guests and after a brief introduction detailing the history of the land, family, and Hogan we leave guests to enjoy their time.

Response from the owner Helen, Thank you. Yes, a Navajo Hogan is first and foremost a home. It s also the center of ceremonial activity. The Hogan is meant to be an experience. We've opened it up for guests at our ranch to understand and appreciate the Navajo way of life. All Hogan floors are compacted dirt. The dirt floor represents Mother Earth and is kept very clean as it is easily swept. During the winter we provide unlimited wood for heating. However, as stated in our immediate response to all inquiries we send a detailed email stating, "We provide a traditional Dine' breakfast of blue corn porridge and a fruit medley with nuts and your choice of coffee or Navajo Tea. All other meals can be sourced in town. Cooking can also be done over open fire here. Small bundles of firewood or charcoal to cook can be purchased at any outlet in the town of Page." The Navajo nation is a dry reservation. We do not allow alcohol, especially in the Hogan. It is stated in "House Rules."

“Enjoyable”

Staying in the Hogan was a fun and different experience. My 6-year old daughter really enjoyed it. The property is as described- rural and rugged. I suggest bringing extra flashlights.
