Description from owner
Description
The beautiful village of Peyriac de Mer is situated at the southern end of the Languedoc Roussillon area of the South of France in the magnificently rugged region of the Corbières. Over 3,000 sq. km of well-preserved nature, wild yet hospitable, with the Pyrenean mountains and the frontier with Spain to the south and the Mediterranean Sea to the east. In this beautiful part of France, where the sun shines more than 300 days a year.
Every summer, usually in July, there is an exhibition 'The Art & Culture of the Herault' held in the village. Nearby villages and landscapes are frequently visited by artists attracted by the unspoilt abundant natural beauty.
Ornithology is abundant in the region- particularly in Peyriac de mer where there is a large collection of flamingoes. There is also a huge wildlife park nearby at Sigean which you can spend the day driving around watching the animals in their natural environment. Fishing is also a practised sport and past-time in the lakes around the area. Villagers often sell locally caught fresh fish or even give it away if they can smell out a bbq!
Fantastic windsurfing can be enjoyed just 4 miles up the road at Bages, or Leucate (15 mins south bound) or Gruissan (30 mins N.E) or Narbonne Plage (due north of Narbonne by 5 miles) or Porte la Nouvelle (10 mins south bound) Good sandy beaches on the Mediterrian are at Gruissan, Narbonne Plage & Porte la Nouvelle. More sheltered beaches are also dotted along the coastline. South of Perpignan is Porte Vendres & Collioure where there are amazingly spectacular coves, mountains that drop into the sea with gorgeous beaches. Heading noth east brings you to Provence and north to the Gorges du Tarn and Millau. All within an easy spectacular drive. The Pyrenees are south and west of Peyriac and in view from the village to explore via cycling or walking.
The views in the Pyreness in all seasons are staggeringly beautiful, Andora is about 2.5/3 hrs drive away- but for a long day or an overnight B&B, certainly worth the visit. Narbonne was the Roman 'carrefour' (crossroads) between Spain and Italy. It is covered with history in every direction. Heading either south into Spain, north east to Provence or north to the Gorges du Tarn where the Millau bridge is situted is all within an easy beautiful drive. Market day in Narbonne is Thursdays & Sundays. There is a market in Sigean on Wednesdays, there is a market in Porte la Nouvelle on Saturdays and one in Gruissan on Wednesdays.
