Description

Otter Bothy is a small, cosy cabin for one or two people.   

The bothy has a very comfy double bed, with all linen provided.  There are basic cooking facilities, including a two ring hob, fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster, pots and pans, and crockery for two.  There is also a large shower room, with toilet and sink.  The bothy has a decking area with seating to enjoy the beautiful views over West Loch Roag.

Otter Bothy is ideally situated, directly on the shores of West Loch Roag, in the village of Carishader.  Only a few metres from the loch, there aren't many places as close to the water as this!

It provides a comfortable and cosy retreat for walkers, cyclists, surfers, kayakers, and anyone wishing to explore the stunning scenery and wildlife of the Isle of Lewis.  As well as two resident otters, who can be spotted directly from the bunkhouse, there is an abundance of wildlife to be seen on West Loch Roag, including seals, gannets, red throated divers, terns, golden eagles, sea eagles, and the occasional dolphin.

There is direct access to West Loch Roag, ideal for kayakers, and a separate drying shed for wetsuits, surfboards, bikes, and also a firepit.

New for 2020, we now have four sit-on top kayaks for hire, two doubles and two singles. Prices are £30 a day for double kayaks, and £25 per day for single kayaks.

“Small is beautiful”

First things first. The otter bothy is small and there’s no getting away from it. The bed fills the room and there is no place to sit in comfort. Having said all that it’s fabulous because of the situation, the quiet, the view and the isolation. It’s a lovely spot with fantastic places to visit nearby. It’s clean and the shower works well! . It is however small so if you like space go somewhere else but for us it was perfect.
