Description from owner

Description

This historic house, circa 1895, was moved ten blocks into the Mill Pine National Historic District to preserve it with other houses of the same vintage. Updated since, to include indoor bathroom and shower, tiled kitchen with automatic dishwasher, garbage disposal, water, electricity, central gas heating, insulation, washing machine and dryer, cable TV and WiFi. All improvements not available when the house was built. This house is contemporary with Roseburg's becoming the county seat of Douglas County and the city's founder, Aaron Rose. It is a great location from which to visit the rest of the nation's first working man's residential district and many interesting homes on the National Register.

The sportsman will also find this a base for fishing and recreating on the Umpqua River. The Pacific Ocean and Crater Lake and Diamond Lake are within two hours drive. The south Umpqua River and a county boat launch facility is only a few blocks away.

The wine connoisseur has the choice of many winery's producing Oregon's finest vintages. The oldest winery in Oregon, Hillcrest Vineyard , where Pinot Noir became the favored grape is certain to be on your winery tasting tour of Douglas County vineyards.

This small home is just over 1000 square feet. The two bedrooms each have a queen size bed. The one restroom has a shower. The kitchen has a micro wave, stove/oven, refrigerator, dishwasher etc. The washer and dryer can be used on extended stays. There is a dinning area and cable tv in the living room. Nothing fancy but comfortable.

“I suited our needs”

This was a very affordable way for our family to stay and check out the area. The kitchen was large and I was able to cook all of our meals. The washer and dryer was wonderful to have. It is not an… More

Response from the owner Thank you for your review. I hope to have you back again. Modern is difficult in a National Historic District on the National Register, but we strive to have all the modern conveniences including dishwasher, garbage disposal and indoor plumbing. The residences in this historic district pre dated indoor plumbing, paved streets and even electricity so with that as the baseline most of the conveniences are modern.

Response from the owner Thank you for the glowing review. I’m happy when my guests recognize my efforts to make them feel at home. As a retired historian and museum director, I chose to live and contribute to Roseburg’s Mill Pine National Historic District. This vacation rental is a home originally built in the late 1800,s and contemporary with other buildings in the Mill Pine, turn of the century working man’s district. The people who lived here witnessed our nation and its leaders and changes from Teddy Roosevelt onward. If there is a presence, it is one of love, and the aspirations of the average working man’s family from dirt roads and horses to the present.
