We were so delighted to have stumbled upon Chris' Kyoto listing while searching for a central traditional accommodation.
We were a family of 4 and thoroughly enjoyed our short visit to this magical place. The house is immaculately cared for, perfectly clean with fresh crisp linens and all the modern conveniences you could possibly ask for whilst traveling. Chris obviously has a great knack for converting old Kyoto houses with respect and sensitivity into spaces suitable for a contemporary lifestyle. We were just very impressed with the high standard of craftsmanship and finish achieved in the restoration. We also appreciated the very warm and cozy heating system that kept us so comfortable during the rather cold Kyoto winter temperatures ...
The location is hard to beat, close to the action as far as sight-seeing or dining is concerned but the best part is being surrounded by so many Geishas houses.
During the day, you see them running errands in their typical hairstyles and at dusk whisking away to different venues, in their full elaborate costumes !
All communication pre and during our visit was always prompt, gracious and welcoming.
If you are considering Chris' house for your stay and are hesitating, well, you don’t need to anymore : just GO FOR IT without the slightest doubt.
This was a (7th) return visit to Apple House. And it certainly feels like coming home for us now. Apple House is a small Japanese style home in Kyoto's northeast, snuggled under Heiezan. It's a great place for a sojourn in this great city - handy for many of its gems and able to offer a glimpse of the peace and serenity we all need. Apple House is managed by exceptional hosts whose warmth and generosity is legend with regulars.
"Elegant, modern, simple machiya in tranquil Gion neighbourhood."
Left on 01/14/2017 for a stay in December 2016
This little home was perfection and gave us a great traditional Japanese experience with all the modern conveniences. Warm wood floors, comfy bed, modern bath and kitchen made this home a superior experience over tiny hotel rooms. We are family of 4 with 2 teenage kids. They loved sleeping on the tatami beds, while we had the luxury of the 2nd floor bedroom. The house is professionally renovated and up to code with all fire regulations and is in a very safe neighbourhood. The house is conveniently located close to Kiyomiza temple and the many little streets, shops and restaurants of Gion area. Train stations within easy walking distance and a Lawson store right around the corner. Chris was very responsive with communications and many suggestions. Arrival, checkout, payment and deposit refund were easy, prompt and professional.
The tiny restaurant across the street looked very authentic, but make sure to ask for reservations as it seems to seat only a few for dinner. We will definitely rent from Chris again and try that restaurant. Experiencing this home was a highlight of our Japan travels.
I have stayed in holiday rentals in many parts of the world and this is the best. The communication when booking was efficient and the check in and out seamless. Everything has been thought of and toiletries and basic cooking supplies provided. The accommodation was cleaned mid way through our four night stay and everything was immaculately clean when we arrived. We walked everywhere and the stream in front was a great reference point to orientate ourselves when using a map. I used the bath house just a couple of minutes around the corner which was wonderful after a day sightseeing. I would return in a heartbeat and highly recomend this lovely little place to stay in Kyoto.
