About Redondo

The Chowignas were the first people to stay in the Redondo Beach area. They fished and used the salt from the salt flats to preserve their food.

In the late 19th century people from around California began vacationing on the coast and many settled in the Redondo Beach area. The town grew mainly because of the railroad and port. The development of the lumber trade ensured the port was always busy. Now there is only one lumber mill left standing and this has been converted to house the Cannery Row art studio. It’s a unique site which you should definitely check out.

The first hotel, the Hotel Redondo, was built in 1889 and because of this, Redondo Beach soon became a desirable vacation destination.

The local cuisine is essentially American with hints of European and Asian dishes filtering into it. Give it all a try during your stay.

What to do in Redondo Beach

If you have kids, they'll love the Hopkins Wilderness Park. Have a picnic there, or hike along the trails. You can even rent a campsite for the night.

Go on a whale watching tour and see the majestic creatures breach. If you don't see whales, there are usually dolphins playing in the boat's wake and sea lions to spot.

Visit SEA Lab, a relatively small sea aquarium, which is perfect for elementary school-age kids. They'll love Dominguez Park too!

Redondo Beach is ideal for surfing, kite surfing, wind surfing and stand-up paddle boarding, as well as swimming, of course. Alternatively, just soak up the sun on the beach and relax.

Try a Segway tour! You'll love the experience and don't worry—you are trained in how to do the tour safely. This is a great way of seeing the waterfront at Redondo Beach.

No vacation at Redondo Beach can be complete unless you visit the pier. Don't miss this sight out when you’re there!
