Additional Location Information
Come visit the American West! Sun Valley, the USA's first destination ski resort, is laid back and friendly. Top notch downhill skiing, Olympic nordic skiing and snowboarding on the mountain that has been hailed as the best in the world for downhill. Year-round ice skating - a fave destination of Olympic Gold Medalist Evan Lysacek (whom we have met here!). In the summer months, choose a champion golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., horseback riding, world-renowned fly fishing, hiking through the White Cloud mountains and Sawtooth range, lake swimming at Redfish Lake, or rafting down the Salmon River, “The River of No Return.” Free bus service from our street to town and the Sun Valley Lodge, gun club, golf course and riding stables.
Home to movie stars Tom Hanks, Clint Eastwood and Bruce Willis, and rock legend Steve Miller.
Spectacular dining - from Grumpy's "burgers and beer" to first-class organic dining at Cristina's. Take the gondola up the mountain to the famed Roundhouse Restaurant, or a sleigh ride to the Trail Creek Cabin, a favorite of Gary Cooper. Gourmet grocery store in town. Terrific art galleries and lively arts scene including the famed free Sun Valley Symphony in late July and August. Very friendly small town with tons of history.
Free WiFi also in town at Tully's Coffee, Iconoclast Books, and Perry's restaurant; free internet access at The Community Library. If you want to leave your laptop at home, the Wood River Community YMCA has a Y-Fi computer bar -- a community gathering place providing members with access to 12 state-of-the-art Apple Macintosh computers. The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games gifted the computers in recognition of YMCA support.
Free bus service all around town.
Sun Valley, Idaho, Summer Rush, San Francisco Chronicle:
"As any ski bum knows, Sun Valley, Idaho, is one of North America's premier ski destinations and a true winter wonderland. Its summer attractions, though, are many and often overlooked. I was there because a friend put together a mini reunion of college pals and told us he thought Sun Valley would be the ideal place to meet. We wanted to be playing in the outdoors, doing physical things, perhaps trying to convince ourselves that we were as young as we felt. And it turned out my friend was right, Sun Valley was the ideal place. ..."
Ski Magazine Jan 2010 cover story - The Return of Sun Valley
"Most other mountains reveal themselves in pieces. A cruiser here, a chute there, a catwalk in between—a jigsaw puzzle waiting to be assembled piece by piece to form the big picture. But not Baldy. And certainly not Sun Valley. This archetypal mountain offers snow sliding at its most basic: a single mountain you can ski from top to bottom in roughly a straight line. And its classic ski town offers mountain living that’s still unadulterated. Rugged? Yes. Elegant? Yes. But most of all, this place is honest and enduring."
November, 2009 "National Geographic Adventure" magazine on the best ski resorts in the U.S.:
"Across the Rocky Mountains, wannabe ski pros like to boast about the tallest cliffs they’ve hucked and the steepest slopes they’ve run. Unless they come from Sun Valley. Here in America’s first destination ski resort, braggarts still obsess over the holiest of old-school grails: vertical. “Sun Valley remains the best place in the world to rack up vertical and get your legs tired,” says Reggie Crist, a former Olympian and longtime resident. And starting this winter, the vert chase gets easier when the resort launches its first ever gondola. The Roundhouse will whisk skiers 2,000 vertical feet up Bald Mountain to its namesake restaurant, sparing them a windy, two-chair ride. Also on tap: a new 58,000-square-foot golf and Nordic center with 25 miles of cross-country track for those of us who don’t mind a little horizontal too ((website: hidden))."
