If you are looking for a chrome, glass, and marble condo, look elsewhere... This is a 100 year old, wooden farmhouse on a working coffee farm (9 Has/23 ac.) in the beautiful Turrialba region.
”Far from the madding crowd”, this property is ideal for relaxing, enjoying nature, or for birdwatching. Enjoy great views of Turrialba Volcano, or watch as the dairy cows graze in the pastures across the unpaved lane, and as night falls ”the lowing herd winds slowly o'er the lea,... And leaves the world to darkness and to me.“ (Actually, contrary to Gray's poem, these cows are silent) But the Turrialba region also offers more active pursuits. The best white water rafting in the country is at nearby Pacuare River (in top 10 in the world, according to Outdoor Magazine), with pickup and return at the farm. Other tours include hiking near active Turrialba Volcano, horseback riding through the CATIE botanical preserve, coffee tours, canopy/zip lining, Tarzan swing, Guayabo archeological park, a snake farm, and more.
You have the newly refurbished 200 sq.mt. (1600 sq.ft.) house to yourself. Special care to preserve the original character and ambiance of the house was taken while updating the 2 full bathrooms with abundant hot water and modern plumbing, and in rebuilding the large, completely equipped kitchen. Living room, dining room and bedrooms retain the original high wooden ceilings and floors, constructed from uneven width wooden planks. 3 bedrooms sleep 5 people. Large master bedroom has a king size bed (attached twin beds with bed bridge - which can be separated upon prior request), second bedroom with queen size bed, and a third smaller bedroom with one twin size bed. If necessary, a queen sleeper sofa in the living room can sleep an additional 2 people. Turn off your cell phone, close the wooden shutters on the windows, and sleep in perfect country darkness until the rooster wakes you in the morning to enjoy your complimentary Los Titos farm grown morning coffee. You aren't taking a vacation in order to make beds and sweep up every day, so daily (weekdays) cleaning service is included.
A tropical garden, developed over two generations, surrounds the house. And in the orchid garden, when in season, you can see up to 20 different species in bloom. A short forest trail provides your own private tropical botanical garden tour with multiple tropical plants and trees, and benches along the way to sit and birdwatch. If you prefer, lie in a hammock in the shade watching the dozens of bird species that frequent the garden and bird feeders all year long, or the sloth family that lives in the trees around the house. You're likely to see them almost year round.
Seasonally available tropical produce from the farm include guanabana, passion fruit, plantains, cassava, Kalamanzi lemons, Tamarillo (tree tomatoes), and dehydrated miniature bananas. You are welcome to visit the coffee plantation, and during harvest season (Aug-Nov) you can grab a basket and pick coffee alongside the local residents. The farm manager and his family also live nearby on the farm, so local knowledge is always available.
