Description
Briggs Farm is a family-owned outdoor adventure and event destination encompassing 560 acres of wooded bluffs, meadows, farmland, and creek bottoms. The farm was one of the first in Winona County, established in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants Halvor and Kari Myhre. Today, the Briggs family maintain a small herd of grass-fed beef cattle on the farm, but most of the property is managed to attract wildlife, including red-tailed fox, whitetail deer, wild turkey, eagles, coyotes, brown trout, wood turtles, hooded warblers, showy lady’s slipper, and jeweled shooting stars, to name just a few.
The three-bedroom country farmhouse features a fully equipped kitchen, full bathroom (and a "bonus bathroom"--tiny but convenient), deck, patio, porch, dining room and living area, a large bird-feeding station, and an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven. Whole-house rental rates for up to 8 people are $150 per night Sunday – Thursday nights and $175 Friday and Saturday.
Guests enjoy a wide range of activities on the farm, including hiking or skiing/snow shoeing our 15 miles of trails. The farm is currently being surveyed by a small team of volunteer naturalists who are documenting the natural features of the farm on our website. Trout fishing, wild berry picking. and wild apple picking are popular seasonal activities. We also offer a variety of classes and activities for an additional fee, including guided bird watching, outdoor survival skill training, wild fiber weaving, guided stargazing, hay ride/bonfire, pizzas from our outdoor wood-fired oven, and meals cooked on the farmhouse's wood cook stove (grass-fed sirloin steak with morel mushroom sauce, anyone?). (The kitchen includes a gas stove for your convenience as well.) Nearby Winona, Minnesota, offers a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities. Our website offers details of add-on activities that you can select after booking.
Rates are for two adults; additional adults (up to eight) are $25 each. Children 17 and under stay free, so do not count them when listing the number of people staying at the farm. Our farm is kid-friendly (and kid-tested by our own children and their friends!).
Please note: While the farmhouse is comfortable and nicely appointed (see photos), it does not include a landline; cell phone service is available, and if you do not have a cell phone, we can make one available at the farm. The farm does not have air conditioning, which is usually not an issue, even in the summer, given the cool nights. Finally, we cannot accommodate pets, with the exception of dogs on leashes or kenneled on site in our dog kennel. This is for the safety and protection of your pets as well as our farm animals, and also out of consideration for other guests with cat/dog hair allergies. Thanks for your understanding.

Response from the owner Yvonne, we discussed some of these issues at the time of your arrival, at which time I offered you a full refund, which you declined. I also offered to kennel the dog (which you also declined), and gave you a key to the house. Although we're in a very rural setting with very minimal traffic, not to mention a guard dog, we do offer a key to guests who want to lock up while they're out. This is a working farm; I do come and go on the property to get outdoor work done, but I live in town, and always respect the privacy of my guests. About those bugs...the weekend you stayed, the entire area was experiencing a major outbreak of Asian lady beetles, an invasive pest. Although the outbreak lasted only a few days, they do like to come into the house, and as anyone in rural southeastern Minnesota knows, it's pretty hard to keep them out. Just to be clear: This is a rustic farmhouse experience. The photos you'll find online are representative of what you can expect: clean, basic accommodations with antique farmhouse touches as well as modern conveniences. We genuinely enjoy working with our guests, and are always happy to work to accommodate any issues or concerns that come up...as the other reviews here attest.
