“A very special place”

Reviewed 17 Jul 2013

I'd heard a lot about Tuscany from friends and there's a certain romance about the area which intrigued me for years. La Balconata was not quite what I expected....it was so much better. Most of the scenery we see on the media consists of gently rolling hills of greenery but the area around Bagna Di Luca is much more rugged and interesting frankly. The property has been restored over several years by the owners who purchased the place as it was on the verge of collapse so there's many an interesting story about the renovation and the impressive steel work which rescued the building. For all that it has been renovated it isn't a place you can't relax in. On the contrary, as you walk through the door it instantly feels like home. At least it did to me. It's rustic, quirky, interesting and comfortable. We went as a group of 5 and the three bedrooms are all ful of character and romance. We were given full run of the huge kitchen and spent more of our evenings cooking, eating and drinking in the atmospheric setting. The owners have built a (serious!) pizza oven onto the the side of the property and one evening they treated us to an array of home made pizza which was brilliant. Especially wherne accompanied by local (really cheap!) excellent quality wines which are guarantee NOT to give you a hangover - believe me, they don't, I tried reallly hard to get one!! The star of 'the show' really is the view. You begin to appreciate it as you wind your way down the short hill from the (extremely good) restaurant's car park. But when you walk through the house to the south facing side, the views are astonishing. Apart from wehn it rained heavily (which it did a bit) at all times of day the lush, green, sweeping, forest-covered valley is nothing short of breathtaking and something you cannot tire of. You just can't. As you will have gathered (assuming you're still reading) we really enjoyed the place, the people, the scenery. But when you want a change of scenery you can be in the beautiful walled town of Luca in an hour, at the coast on fabulous beaches, or in 90 minutes you can be in Florence. But for me La Balconata has everything. It wont be everyone's cup of tea I'm sure. It is certainly rustic but in it's own luxurious way. Furthermore, you will find that you're up and down the stairs quite a bit as the kitchen is on the ground floor, the huge lounge (with wood burners - gorgeous!) is on the first floor, and the bedrooms at the top. But if you want to chill out in a glorious setting and not have to do much more than troll down to the excellent local supermarket occasionally, you will do well to find somewhere better. Our next visit can't come soon enough.

“Fantastic place to stay with magnificent views”

Reviewed 28 May 2013

Stayed here for a few days in spring. The owners were lovely and so welcoming after a spectacular drive to the quiet little village above the clouds. The property is well fitted out (quite new) and homely. However, the highlight has to be my memory of sitting on the deck and enjoying the view across the mountains. The ever changing scenery makes it a visual experience to be remembered forever.
