“Fantastic relaxing break in a beautiful area” We arrived late at night and the key was in the door of the cottage with the place lovely and warm and ready for us. We were given organic veg, chocolate, beer and plum cake as a gift! The cottage was beautifully done out inside with gorgeous sheep fleece rugs, an amazing view out of upstairs, and the bathrooms were fantastic with a walk in shower in the guest bedroom. It is located close to Loweswater and Crummock Water and Keswick is easily accessible for a cream tea! We ate at Cottage in the Woods and the Kirkstile Inn which I would thoroughly recommend to anybody - they both offer amazing food and are roughly 10mins drive away. We loved the views from the windows, excellent location and space offered by the cottage. The drying cupboard for our wet clothes was also a lovely extra! There aren't any negative points of our stay - I would definitely recommend this place (and already have done).

“Ideal holiday home” Our family really enjoyed our holiday in this beautiful quiet location. The house is very well equiped, very comfortable. The Shield family very welcoming, local eating houses very good but suggest booking for wheatsheaf as it is very popular and dogs are welcome. We found lots to do and Keswick is not far to go. The only negative was that the third bedroom is small and would be better as a single room. We would certainly return and recommend it to others.

“Idyllic” My family and I had a lovely time staying at Groom Cottage, Lorton. It was a very cosy, beautifully decorated house with fantastic views and convenient for both Cockermouth and Keswick. We loved the attention to detail with the deoor and ornaments and the bountiful supply of CDs, books and Dvds. It was great that we could conveniently access the keys by the safe box attached to the side of the porch. We particularly enjoyed the sun room which was great to relax in with a glass of wine after a long walk over the fells. The kitchen was a bit on the small side but had everything we needed to prepare meals. All in all a truly memorable stay.

ESTHERS BARN, eco-friendly, open plan living space, underfloor heating, near

Cockermouth house

2 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 4

“wet and wonderful...typical Lakes!” Excellent modern eco friendly house; underfloor heating needs careful use especially with the need, by the owner, to anticipate a cold snap 24 hrs ahead. Well kittec out, very comfortable house; alas the sofas were very low and difficult for older people. Great use of the surrounding land to good effect. Complex is well placed for the far west Lakes and close to Cockermouth which offers good, varied and enjoyable facilities. Very happy to return.

Beckside

Cockermouth cottage

3 bedrooms / 3 bathrooms / sleeps 6

“Superb all year round holiday home” We have just enjoyed our second holiday at Southwaite Green - this time at Beckside to accommodate further family members. It is a luxurious, open plan, light and airy cottage, but with a warm and cosy feel provided by the easily controlled under floor heating. The bedrooms are very comfortable and all have their own beautiful en suites or bathroom. We ate in most of the time and found the kitchen extremely well equipped and easy to work in. We enjoyed eating in the dining area with its French doors on to a south facing patio overlooking stunning views. The patio is also a super place to eat or sit and relax on sunny days. Back indoors, however, there is a large cabinet for drying walking gear on wet days - so everything is catered for, including of course a really comfortable lounge to relax in at the end of the day. The site has been extensively planted with trees and shrubs. There are also picnic areas and viewing points – superb to watch the evening sun lighting up the mountains. The owner lives on the site and is always on hand if needed and happy to answer questions about her eco friendly holiday home project. Having stayed in the Windermere area in 2006 we found the Western side of the Lake Distinct much more peaceful and relaxing. Southwaite Green is in lovely surroundings and close to so many areas of outstanding natural beauty. It's a five minute drive to Cockermouth, a pretty town (even after the floods), with William Wordsworth's early childhood home. It also has a supermarket for those wishing to cook at home, but there are plenty of places to eat out. The larger town of Keswick is only about a 20 minute drive away. The whole holiday experience was excellent and it was good to be able to carry on recycling our rubbish whilst away. Our only regret was that we were too warm to light the wood burning stove!

Esther's Barn

Cockermouth cottage

2 bedrooms / 3 bathrooms / sleeps 5

“Memorable visit” Esther's Barn was immaculately clean and comfortable . Bedrooms and en-suites were spacious with bang up to date fixtures and fittings. Underfloor heating ensured cosy toes on the frosty mornings. The cottage and its surrounding development was well worthy of its five star rating. The cottage has stunning views and there are walks on the doorstep. Outside, the development has been the subject of a massive tree planting scheme and has other interesting features including a wildlife pond and raised beds. The coast, Munster Castle and National Trust property ie. Wordsworth House and Carlise Castle are all in striking distance and worthy of a visit. We will certainly return.

“Excellent cottage and great location” Stayed at Skiddaw for one week at the end of May 2014, the cottage was very clean, well equipped and comfortable. The plum bread and chocolate awaiting us on arrival was a nice touch. The grounds and views of the surrounding countryside at Southwaite Green are beautiful and it was ideal for the dogs. We have stayed in many cottages in the Lake District and this is definitely one of the best and hopefully we will return.

Didn't feel the need to rush off out!

We felt very comfortable and relaxed here, good open aspect enjoyed the views through the large windows in the main living area. A walk around the paths leading to the pond are worth exploring and a glass of wine whilst watching the sun go down from the summer house positioned at the top of the pond shouldn't go amiss either. Al in all very enjoyable. Tim & Teresasee more

Wonderful accommodation and location

Skiddaw is one of a set of 4 'cottages' set in 10 beautiful, semi-wild acres of land. It seems like it is in the middle of nowhere but is only 2 miles from Cockermouth. We stayed in Buttermere, which is without doubt the best self-catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. It was contemporary, spacious, with great views. Two sets of double doors led out onto a lovely southfacing garden and patio, with the beck only a couple of meters away. We looked at all cottages as we will definitely come back, and Skiddaw looked great too. The eco-theme was fascinating and clearly there has been lots of thought and innovative developments so it just felt good to be there. We could take our two dogs which was a huge bonus, and it was lovely taking them out round teh grounds (which include a pond for swimming) and fabulous views of the Skiddaw and other mountains. I would highly recommend any of the 4 cottages. Buttermere and Skiddaw would be my favourites.see more

The Byre (Wood Farm Self Catering Cottages)
We found The Byre peaceful and spacious.

We were looking for a three bed-roomed cottage with two bathrooms. I was attracted to a farm site for its isolation and tranquillity. We found everything clean and comfortable, with lots of space. The kitchen is well-eqipped the beds were fine. We were out each day walking. It was a pleasure to return to a lengthy meal with no traffic noise. Yet Cockermouth is minutes away and well provided with parking and supermarkets. Our hosts were discreet and courteous. I imagine we might return there ourselves.see more
