JEMIMA Puddle Duck Cottage, log fire, nr Keswick

Keswick cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 5

“Without a doubt the best cottage ever!” My husband, 5 year old son and I had a weekend break at Jemima Puddleduck Cottage and can't wait to go back! From the moment of booking, Mrs Trafford was extreemely helpful and prompt in her replies to queries. She offered advice on where to eat locally and even booked a table at the Swan Inn on our behalf (which was a good recommendation). And what a lovely cottage! The fire was set and ready to light in the comfortable and welcoming living room, and the bedrooms were both warm and airy, as well as being nicely decorated. The cottage was equipped with everything we needed, and the Trafford family even let us borrow their two dogs to walk. My son was able to put the ducks to bed and let them out onto the little stream nearby in the morning, which made his day. While Mrs Trafford says she just wants to make sure her guests are comfortable, i would say she went above and beyond in terms of her kindness and welcoming manner. We've already recommened the cottage to family, and plan returning as soon as we can.

Keswick house

“No hesitations about recommending archers..” ... except it might get too busy to re-book it again! Having stayed in a different cottage for a number of happy visits to Keswick, my first stay in archers was a reluctant change - but i was more than satisfied, and look forward to returning if i ever have the opportunity to work in the Lakes again. Comfortable, cosy, well-equipped. Great location for being central to shops, but easy access for walks, cycling etc...

“Lovely apartment” We had a lovely stay at Elm Court. Great location near Keswick centre but nice quiet and private. Only one gripe, the painter that was there to paint the exterior windows entered our apartment when we were not there and without our permission. When I reported this to the local office I was told they didn't know anything about it and that no-one had a key to enter it anyway. My husband spoke to the painter and he confirmed that the work was agreed with the local office and that he had a key to every apartment!! Better communication to your visitors would be my recommendation.

“One of life's little treasures....” We had a fabulous time. We filled every bedroom !! My mother and father, twin sisters, auntie and uncle, friend of the family and my husband, son and myself stayed for 2 nights !! what an incredible place !! the house is a hidden treasure but so big !! plenty of room to cook, eat, play etc... We stayed for my fathers 60th birthday as a surprise and what a surprise it was for him !! Plenty of games, cupboards full of books, board games, DVDs. kitchen cupboards full of things you always forget (salt, pepper, olive oil, etc), more than enough utensils, everything in working order, view is beautiful and scenic, especially the sheep and lambs in the field from the window of the master bedroom, rooms beautifully decorated. Keswick is just a short drive. Stephen (the owner) could not have more accommodating with our booking, instructions, everything was just perfect !! Thank you Stephen

“Didn't feel the need to rush off out!” We felt very comfortable and relaxed here, good open aspect enjoyed the views through the large windows in the main living area. A walk around the paths leading to the pond are worth exploring and a glass of wine whilst watching the sun go down from the summer house positioned at the top of the pond shouldn't go amiss either. Al in all very enjoyable. Tim & Teresa

“Cosy & comfortable” This cottage is located on a quiet street within a 10 minute level, easy stroll from the centre of Keswick. Our party consisted of 2 couples, so the 3rd (single) bedroom wasn't used. On first entering the cottage, we were all surprised at how roomy it is, especially the kitchen. The patio outside the back door is very small (only a tiny table and 2 chairs) but as we stayed in chilly March, this wasn't a problem. There is a large bathroom, with a bath, separate shower enclosure, wc, bidet & basin. The double bedrooms are bright, with plenty of drawers and hanging space. The largest bed has a firm mattress, which I found very comfortable, but my daughter thought the other double was a bit on the soft side. The large cupboards on the landing were great for storing our suitcases. Parking is on the street, but we always managed to get parked within a few feet of the door. Our only gripe was the lack of instructions for the cooker, but we managed to figure it out. We had a very enjoyable week in the cottage, and would certainly consider it again for a winter break.

“Cosy cottage providing an excellent base for a Lake District hol” A very warm and friendly welcome was provided by the owners who live on the farm joining this cottage. The cottage was clean and cosy with a modern kitchen. Lots of useful equipment and games for the children. The location is very quiet but, with a car, is in easy striking distance of all the main attractions.

“Wonderful accommodation and location” Skiddaw is one of a set of 4 'cottages' set in 10 beautiful, semi-wild acres of land. It seems like it is in the middle of nowhere but is only 2 miles from Cockermouth. We stayed in Buttermere, which is without doubt the best self-catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. It was contemporary, spacious, with great views. Two sets of double doors led out onto a lovely southfacing garden and patio, with the beck only a couple of meters away. We looked at all cottages as we will definitely come back, and Skiddaw looked great too. The eco-theme was fascinating and clearly there has been lots of thought and innovative developments so it just felt good to be there. We could take our two dogs which was a huge bonus, and it was lovely taking them out round teh grounds (which include a pond for swimming) and fabulous views of the Skiddaw and other mountains. I would highly recommend any of the 4 cottages. Buttermere and Skiddaw would be my favourites.

“Engagement surprise” cottage we stayed in the cottage for a week, with family arriving mid week to celebrate our engagement. The cottage is very quaint and the wood burning stove in the lounge was perfect. The rooms were clean and spacious,we've given them a 4 as the bed layout may not suit everyone but it worked for us. The kitchen is well equipped and if you don't want to cook the pub 5 minutes away do good food. The farm is super friendly, my 9yr old helped with the ducks and the lambs, he loved it, it was nice to be welcomed and shown around a working farm rather than be bombarded with private/keep out signs. The location is great for relaxing and we'll placed for walks down to the lake or up skiddaw. The stream and swings provided hours of fun for kids and the local dogs were friendly too. We had great time and would recommend it.

THE HAYLOFT, characterful, romantic, lake views, Near Keswick Ref 972331

Thirlmere house

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 2

“Great location for walkers” I went to this beautiful location in mid September with my boyfriend. As we drove up to the property we were stunned by the natural beauty surrounding it. The apartment itself is a good size. There is not much shelf space, but plenty to hang your things, as well as a separate room in the building opposite for your wet walking gear. There is a reasonable size living/dining/kitchen area, and a bathroom with shower/tub. The only downside was that the heating is not on much, and the flat was pretty cold a lot of the time(and it was pretty cold that week in Sept). As well as there is not heaps of hot water, not enough to fill the tub completely or have a longer shower/or two right after each other. The views you see over the lake are stunning, but all you can see from the window facing it, is the back of the main house, but the small window to the back of the flat looks over the garden which is nice. For those who loves walks. this was great area, from the main garden towards the lake(just around the main house) you have a path straight onto the walking paths around thirlmere lake itself. And you are within a 15min walk to helvellyn. And the owners of the property are more than happy to help, as well as serving food if you book in advance with them. Its within great distance for driving to explore more of what the north has to offer to. Would definitely come back to the area, but perhaps book one of their other suites that overlook the lake.

“Home from home” Second time we have visited The Old Mill. Lovely flat, very clean and well furnished, quiet road with all amenities round the corner. Never heard any neighbours, just down the road from the cinema and local small supermarket. Highly recommended, but the access stairs (18 I think) might put some people off (not us though). I would not recommend for young families for this reason. So sorry it is already booked for the week we need next year, hopefully the following year we will be back.

“Cosy Christmas at Coombe Cottage” Our family party of 7 enjoyed a memorable Christmas in this beautifully furnished and spacious property. An initial problem with the heating was quickly resolved by a phone call to the owner. Thank goodness we were warm and snug inside, since the weather was truly horrendous for most of the week! We could not fault the amenities of Coombe Cottage and the well-equipped kitchen made for hassle-free cooking. We would certainly visit again - but would hope for kinder weather next time!

“Prefect location” Prefect location . Just on the high street. However was surprisingly quite and peaceful . Parking was fantastic . The apartment was very clean and well stocked with lots of lovely little touches . Only down side was the noisy pipe work in the bathroom when using the bath or shower. There were instructions on how to turn the taps on slowly . There was clearly a knack to doing it but unfortunately we didn't master it during our stay . I would definitely stay again

THIRLMERE SUITE, ground floor apartment, lake views, WiFi, parking, romantic

Thirlmere house

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 2

“Stunning View” Being able to sit eating breakfast with uninterrupted views overlooking Thirlmere reservior was an absolute treat! This hotel with self catering appartments is in an absolutely idyllic setting. And because the water is a reservior as opposed to a lake, no motor craft are allowed - we didn't even see a canoe - so a perfect millpool. Property is set back from the road, so no traffic noises either, and surrounded by mature, well-groomed and landscaped grounds. Apartment was very spacious - slight critiscism about the lack of work-top and storage space in the kitchen - fine if you're only going to sort yourselves out with breakfast, but a bit frustrating if you're preparing evening meals too. We ended up storing our potatoes in an empty drawer below the cutlery - and we forgot to take them home with us, so I hope someone's found them! Kitchen adequately equipped but not a single sharp knife in the place - had to go out and buy one! Spacious and comfortable bedroom and bathroom. Another slight gripe is that we were able to hear the residents in the suite above us - we could hear snoring and very creaky floorboards through the cieling - sounded like someone was pacing the room whilst suffering with insomnia. Hotel owners were very friendly and informative - we didn't eat at the hotel, but apparently the fine dining is highly recommended. It was very quiet whilst we were there, undoubtedly due to several cancellations because of the bad weather. Overall, the gripes were relatively minor and didn't affect our enjoyment of the venue. Previous self-catering holiday lets have included a complementary, small 'Welcome Pack' - bottle of wine, bottle of milk, packet of biscuits etc - we didn't get one with this venue - though not essential, it would have been a nice touch.
