“Great to experience genuine Japanese house” We had 2 nights in Kyoto and enjoyed this experience and comfort. Beds were welcome for mum/dad and our girls had the futons on the floor in second bedroom. Service provided was terrific and great to have laptop for access to internet/Skype. Would recomend strongly and stay again if circumstances arose!

“Beautiful, authentic, great location and brilliant customer serv” Loved this place. Bathroom to die for: steamy, deep bath opening onto japanese garden. Furniture and fit out extremely beautiful: tiny but good living space and more than enough room for 4. (Wouldn't go for 6 here) Loved: the help we received from Hiro in the office..always got back to us quickly, organised bikes, luggage, temples, bars.. ask him about the super-bathhouse nearby. Lovely guy. Would have liked: wardrobe space/drawers in the main bedroom, and one western chair for reading (if you have old bones!) We stayed with our two teenage sons who loved the ambiance, really japanese flavour and the chill out floor chairs!

“The perfect place to stay in Kyoto” I can’t say enough good things about this apartment, and the folks who own and manage it. My husband and I have now stayed there twice, the second time with my parents in tow, and hope to do so every time we visit Kyoto. The location couldn’t be more perfect: tucked away on a quiet side street in the Gion district, within an easy walk of many shops and restaurants in the immediate area, or a (still short) stroll across the river to reach the department stores and Nishiki Market, not to mention just a few steps away from Kenin-ji Temple, one of the most beautiful Zen temples in all of Japan. The apartment itself is a perfect combination of thoughtfully designed, lovely and traditional Japanese elements and modern convenience, such as heated floors in the bathroom and separate climate control for each room. A spacious tatami living room with a large, sliding , stained-glass window and traditional shrine forms the centerpiece, and is plenty large enough for four people to relax or have a meal together at the low table. The bedrooms are a good size for Japan, nicely decorated, and both the futons and the western bed are comfortable. The bathroom has both a western shower and Japanese stool-and-bucket set up, as well as a large and very relaxing tub with a little window beside it. There is plenty of hot water, plenty of towels, and a separate toilet room away from the bathing area equipped with one of the ubiquitous and wonderful Japanese “washlets.” Everything is maintained in excellent condition, and is spotlessly clean when you arrive. But best of all (at least for us) is the well-appointed kitchen, not just an afterthought in this wonderful apartment. Most of the in Japan, the “kitchen” of a rental property is just a small refrigerator and microwave, a rice cooker and a coffee machine; but here you have a reasonably large stove, an oven/microwave, and enough equipment (Calphalon pots & pans/kitchen tools/tableware) to make a real meal. In addition to the ridiculously amazing food shopping at Nishiki and in the department store basements, there are a few small and well-stocked grocery stores within a couple of minutes’ walk of the apartment. As much as we like the apartment itself, the owner and local manager may be the best thing about the property. They have thought of everything to make your stay here easy and enjoyable, including instructions on how to make sure taxis can find the place! The check-in/out process is smooth and efficient, there is a book in the apartment with an extensive list of useful information about the property and the area, and they themselves are accessible and responsive in the event you need any assistance or have questions. My husband and I have rented apartment around the world and I can honestly say that the Gion House is our favorite, and the best overall experience we’ve had. The people couldn’t be nicer or more helpful. On our second stay, an unforeseen circumstance arose that my husband’s basic Japanese was not enough to handle, and both the owner and manager went well above and beyond to assist us. In short, we highly HIGHLY recommend the Gion Apartment to anyone who wishes to spend time in the heart of Old Kyoto. It is a truly unique and special experience.

“Amazing place!” My family and I absolutely fell in love with this place. We couldn't have found a better place to stay. The location is amazing. It's right by the street where all the geishas and maikos enter the tea houses so we got to see and take pictures of some of them! The place is also right by the shopping area and several famous temples. For the first 2 days we didn't even have to use the bus or train! As for the machiya itself, it was gorgeous and we really felt like we were in a traditional Japanese house. Having 2 full bathrooms on both floors was also really convenient when you are traveling with more than 2 people, especially in the mornings. Our friends who have lived in Japan for close to 10 years recommended staying at a licensed machiya and we are really happy that we took their advice! Highly recommend you stay here!

About Kyoto

Kyoto was the capital of Japan from 794 until 1868, and you can still see the imperial palace, along with numerous shrines, temples and other buildings that escaped the allied bombings of Japan. There are 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kyoto to visit, meaning it’s packed with breathtaking sights to see.

Find a place to stay in the heart of it all by booking a FlipKey vacation rental.

About Kyoto

Kyoto is on the island of Honshu. Its name means 'capital city' in Japanese. It is the cultural capital of Japan, where many Shinto festivals and traditions can be seen. The Japanese think of Kyoto as the heart of Japan.

Kyoto has many traditional tea ceremonies, as well as numerous arts and crafts. It is home to traditional fan-making and craftsmen still make Kyoto lacquerware, Kyoto ceramics and tabi (socks).

Eating in Kyoto is a culinary adventure. You can eat wonderful, simply prepared dishes of fresh vegetables and fruit, or go for the truly elaborate Kaiseki Ryori meals. Be prepared to sample many courses. You can get this cuisine in many restaurants in Kyoto, or if you stay in a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan).

There are so many different things to see, you should plan on staying in Kyoto for some time, not just a couple of days.

What to do in Kyoto

If you visit Kyoto when the cherry trees are in blossom (last week of March until mid-April, usually), you can see the beautiful blossom everywhere. One of the best places to experience it is in the park around the Imperial Palace, or as you walk along the Philosophers' Path.

Perhaps the most famous festival is the Gion Matsuri, held throughout July. The highlight of the festival is on the 17th of July - the Yamaboko Float Parade.

Visit the Fushimi Sake District and try sake, a traditional Japanese wine, at one of the many breweries in the area. You can also take a trip in a flat-bottomed wooden boat. The docks near the Gekkeikan Brewery or the Teradaya Inn are great places to pick one up.

If you are lucky you will be able to visit the Imperial Palace, but check for opening times as it isn't open often.

Top travel tips for Kyoto

Kyoto has a very good transportation system with subways, trains and buses. Alternatively, you can rent a bicycle or take a taxi.

If you go from Kyoto to Tokyo, take the Hikari or Kodama train (local ones are very slow). Alternatively, fly from Itami airport in Kyoto, to Haneda airport in Tokyo. There are also highway buses.

Visit one of the flea markets in Kyoto. One is held on the 21st of every month at the Toji Temple, south of Kyoto station. Do your souvenir shopping shop at the Kyoto Handicraft Center just north of Heian Shrine. You’ll find some unique items to take home as mementos.

Kyoto is a fascinating blend of the old and new with traditions that have been passed down through the centuries. Every visitor will find something of interest here, from the traditional ceremonies to the modern shopping malls.

The Gion House (Upper Level) Prime Gion Location
Loved it, loved it, loved it!

Have just spent 8 nights in the Gion House (Upper Level) with my sister and my niece. This was the fifth time I've visited Kyoto and my first stay in this accommodation. It certainly met all expectations and I'll definitely stay again on any subsequent visits, as would my travelling companions. In addition, I would recommend the Gion House to anyone contemplating a trip to Kyoto. Instructions provided for access to the house were very clear; the self check-in process straightforward. The house itself is spacious (by Japanese standards), very clean and comfortable. It has been beautifully restored and although fitted out with every modern convenience imaginable (the under floor heating is amazing), the essential Japanese elements that set it apart and make it so special, have been maintained. Everything we could possibly have needed for the duration of our stay had been provided. We felt completely at home, to the extent that some days we didn't venture out till after midday. The Gion House is ideally located, close to all of the action of the Gion district, but at the same time is tucked away in a very quiet street, which allows for a good night's sleep. Public transport, in the form of buses and subway, is within easy walking distance. There is a wonderful teppanyaki restaurant around the corner, and in the opposite direction, but very close by, a donut store that specialises in gluten-free donuts - both were great finds for us. It was a real pleasure to meet Curtis (the owner of the property) during our stay. A purely social visit - he just happened to be in the neighbourhood. I should mention that our stay was completely trouble free and at no time did we need to contact the property manager on any matter. Everything worked perfectly ( WiFi was excellent) and every need catered to. All in all, a fantastic place to stay in Kyoto - although situated in the middle of a city of 1.5 million people (and probably half that again in tourists) - once you enter through the door of the Gion House, you really do feel as though you've entered "Another World" ...and it's perfect.see more
Gion Kyuraku - Traditional Luxury in located Machiya in Gion | Kiyomizu, Kyoto!
wonderful, authentic experience

I don't think even many Japanese residents get to experience living in a traditional house like this anymore. This property is everything the description says and more. It is clean, beautiful, authentic and surprisingly spacious. It's not in the description, but there are 2 toilets, which I think is a Japanese luxury in this size property. The doorways and stairway head clearance is low, but that's part of the experience - if you're over 5'10" or so, you'll be ducking a lot everywhere in Japan. What a perfect combination of modern conveniences and traditional living. We landed in Kyoto in a major heat spell (over 90F every day) but the machiya was an oasis with super quiet, efficient air conditioner in every room, washer/dryer, fast wifi, etc. The location is excellent just as described, so I won't go into that. Suffice it to say everything in the description is accurate. It's also located in a small side street so it's very quiet. The grocery store around the corner was great, but be aware that they don't open until 9:30am so get your breakfast fare the night before if you want to have breakfast in the machiya. (Kitchen is very well equipped and the grocery has lots of prepared foods if you don't want to cook from scratch). The machiya was more than enough to make the visit fantastic, but it was topped by Rieko-san, one of the owners. She can beat any top hotel concierges! She had a solution to every question I asked prior to arrival and she even anticipated my needs before I even knew - like the sleeping set up after realizing I had 2 grown children who would take up more space and the departure arrangements working around a local festival traffic. She was always there when we needed anything but never in our way. Our family is already talking about the next time we stay here!see more

Great Experience!

We stayed 5 days in this beautiful house. It is super comfortable with both western beds and japanese tatami well set up. The house is located in the very center of kyoto, tons of delicious traditional restaurants nearby and major metro lines are within walking distance. One thing to mention, the staff speaks perfect english and is very helpful whenever needed!Very important to us... as neither of us speak japanese... We would definately like to go back to Shikokuan next time in kyoto!see more

Very comfortable stay for our family of six

Our family of six stayed here for three nights. We arrived in the early evening, and the townhouse was very easy to find, thanks to the directions that had been sent before our trip. We were greeted by someone who was very helpful in getting us settled. The townhouse was as nice as the pictures looked, but I was a little worried about traffic noise because it is situated on a busy street. However, this didn't bother us at all, the way the floor plan is set out. The kitchen was well equipped, and the bathroom was beautiful, especially the shower room. The laptop, WiFi, and washer/dryer were all essential for us. The twin beds were very comfortable and all of the linens for the beds and futons were clean and crisp. Having a grocery store around the corner was very convenient.see more

A home away from home!

From the moment I sent an email inquiring about the availability of the house, Reiko & Thomas were incredibly helpful! Once I had made my booking, any requests or questions I had regarding Kyoto or the house were answered promptly and in a very friendly and incredibly helpful manner. We did have a little trouble locating the house, only due to receiving incorrect directions from the bus driver, even though Reiko supplied us with a map to the property, but the locals were very helpful and friendly and showed us to the property. We suggest that you catch a taxi from Kyoto train station which is only around 10,000 yen, initially until you know where the property is, show the taxi driver the map in Japanese and when you are there you will find that the main roads have the street name written in English and Japanese, which we found made it much easier to find places. When we did arrive we absolutely loved the property as soon as we walked in, it was very neat and very clean and it is such a beautiful little house, every comfort needed is supplied! We absolutely loved staying there, it truly did come to feel like a home away from home to us and this was the very first time we have ever traveled overseas. The location of the property was great, only 10 mins walk from the subway and there is a great little Seven Eleven about 4 mins walk from the house and it is priced very well indeed, our favourite pit stop. The steps in the house are quite steep, but I enjoyed the exercise and as long as you go down them slowly you will be fine! The Wi-fi is fantastic and I loved the washing machine/dryer, it was awesome and I want one!! lol We booked a morning and afternoon Kyoto tour which was a great way to see some of the shrines and temples, but Reiko has a map on the table that has many great places to see highlighted also, it was very helpful to us! We just want to say thank you so very much for everything and if we end up back in Kyoto I know where we will be staying! :-)))see more
Amber House Gion in Prime Gion Location
An aesthetic experience at a wonderful location

I stayed at the Amber house for 3 weeks with my wife and 4-year-old son. The house manages to strike a perfect balance between Meiji-period aesthetics and modern convenience. In addition to what you can see in the pictures, the smell of the wood, creaky floorboards, soft sound of drums from Kennin-ji, and general attention to detail in interior design make for a great aesthetic experience. The well-equipped kitchen, the house iPhone, washer-dryer, and clear instructions + thorough English labelling enabled a hassle-free stay. The location is great. Right in the heart of Gion, several beautiful temple grounds are within a walking distance, as is the Shijo shopping street. The house is at the end of an impassé, and there's little noise from outside save from the occasional embarrassed giggle of a tourist realising they have taken the wrong turn. I heartily recommend renting a bike to anyone with city biking experience - it really opens Kyoto up for you. You can find a rental for 1-2 € per day (!) if you rent for a couple of weeks or more. We stayed at the Amber House at a time when it was quite cold (below 0 degrees C in the night), and I do recommend packing some warm PJ's if that's what the weather forecast has in store. However, floor heating in the kitchen, feather duvet's in the bedrooms, and the tub to take some nice hot baths in helped a lot in keeping my family warm. If you are 180+ cm tall, you will bang you head on doorways, but it will only make you stronger. We got good and responsive service from Curtis & the crew and felt that our well-being was their priority.see more
