About Kansas City, Missouri

This probably isn't the Kansas you're thinking of – there's no Dorothy or Toto here! But, don't worry, this city still has a lot to offer.

It's grown a lot since its creation in 1850 – it was just a small town back then. Now, it is a thriving city that’s just waiting to be explored.

However, to get to where it is now, the city had to overcome some challenges. Troubles with the local Native American tribes and the American Civil War all played a part in shaping the city you see today.

Find out all about the city’s history in the many museums dotted around the historic downtown area.

While you're here, go to as many steak and barbecue joints as you can – it's what the city's famous for after all! Try the Kansas City steak strip – you won't be disappointed.

The city is also known for its craft breweries – go and sample some fine beers during your stay.

What to do

It's hard to know where to start with Kansas City – there's so much to do!

Sports fans will love it here as there are plenty of teams to support. Watch The Chiefs at a football game, follow The Royals for baseball, or watch the Sporting Kansas City team play a great game of soccer.

If that's not your thing, maybe you'll like hanging out in the 18th & Vine District. It's the Jazz center of Kansas City.

And, if you’re into that, chances are you'll love the performing arts scene here. There are several theaters, a ballet company and more! See if you can catch one of the free concerts during your stay.

Kansas City is nicknamed the 'City of Fountains' – see how many you can spot during your stay (there are 49 in total). Kauffman Stadium is a great place to start, but there are plenty of urban parks where you can see them too.

Swope Park is our favorite. It’s twice as big as New York's Central Park and there's plenty of green space to enjoy. There's a zoo, woodland trails, two lakes, two golf courses and an amphitheater. Bring a picnic and you'll be able to spend the entire day there.

To find out a bit more about the area's past, visit the museums. There's also the National World War 1 Museum and Memorial, plus the Arabia Steamboat Museum – both are worth visiting during your stay.
