Description from owner

Description

This property is ideally located for a family holiday in the Moray Coast with stunning scenery, many attractions and activities nearby. Enjoying a delightful setting just a short walk from the harbour, this lovely detached cottage for four has been equipped and tastefully furnished to a very good standard to ensure as comfortable and relaxing holiday as possible. Above the harbour is the oldest part of the village with narrow wynds and small fisher-folk cottages. Here you will find Gull Cottage lovingly restored in 2017 by the owners to a modern, yet cosy and relaxed home from home.

There is an abundance of walks in the area whether its along beautiful, sandy beaches or along the cliffs looking out over the Moray Firth to Caithness in the distance. There's a good chance of spotting the Dolphins and Seals which are regular visitors along this coastline.

The village is well served with a hotel [serves meals and dog friendly], bar, cafe, chemist, post office/shop, hairdresser and an excellent fish and chip shop (winner of the best fish and chip shop in Moray 2017). Portknockie also has an open air paddling pool at the harbour, outdoor bowling green, a play park and tennis courts.

The cottage sleeps up to 4 people + baby in two bedrooms and is served by two bathrooms. The lounge is a comfy space to unwind after a busy day and the log burner ensures you'll be snug whatever the season. The fully equipped kitchen provides a spacious area to cook, eat and drink with seating for six. There is a good selection of toys, books, games and DVDs. Entry time is 3pm and please depart by 10.00. Please note there is no smoking allowed in the cottage.

THINGS TO DO

There are many things to do from the doorstep of Gull Cottage :-

* A popular walk is along the clifftop path with spectacular views over the Moray Firth and, if you're lucky, sightings of passing bottle-nose dolphins. The path leads from above the harbour past the Bow Fiddle Rock, a natural arch formed by the waves, which provides a spectacular roosting spot for gulls and cormorants.

* The Moray Coastal Footpath passes though the village and there are wonderful walks to the neighbouring villages of Cullen in the east and Findochty in the west.

* For bird lovers the coastal heath provides sightings of varied birdlife.

* The old railway line closed in 1968 and is part of the national cycle path that links Inverness with Aberdeen. The line has a good level surface and is therefore also suitable for wheelchairs and buggies.

* The Moray coast is festooned with golf courses with Cullen Golf Club a mere ten minute drive away. It is a traditional Scottish links course founded in 1870 and designed by Old Tom Morris.

* Visiting small boats are welcome at the harbour and there is also an open air paddling pool for youngsters.

* Gull Cottage is also an ideal base for exploring further afield with easy access to the beautiful beaches of Lossiemouth and Nairn or the Malt Whiskey Trail in glorious Speyside. Elgin is 20 miles away. Here you'll find many larger shops including Springfield Retail Park with stores like Next, Asda, New Look, B&Q, Boots, Costa and more.

Inverness, Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are all within a two hour drive through stunning scenery.

Interaction with guest

Hi, our names are Anne and Colin, we are the proud owners of Gull Cottage. We bought the Cottage in 2015 and renovated it ourselves. We would love to be able to retire in Portknockie with nothing to do except walk the dog along the peaceful beaches and eat fish and chips !!

“Fabulous!”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2022

Portknockie is a lovely little village & Gull Cottage is in an ideal quiet position. It’s the little things that make this place exceptional - from the welcome pack, marshmallows to top your hot chocolate to the binoculars available to use, never mind the gorgeous decor. Our weather wasn’t fantastic which made coming back to this lovely, cosy house even more of a blessing. Communication with Anne was brilliant and we can’t wait to come back to explore further.

“A comfortable, well equipped holiday home.”

Reviewed 23 Oct 2020

This has to be one of the best holiday homes we’ve ever stay in. The house was immaculately clean and so well equipped. It’s also beautifully decorated with a seaside theme. Plenty to see and do in the area. Will definitely be back next year.
