Description

The hidden mill is a 400 year old A listed historic mill in a magical location.
Set in 14 acres of rivers, waterfalls, ancient woodland with abundant wildlife, all under the famous Galloway night skies.
Fabulous, hiking biking and watersports are on your doorstep in the Galloway forest park.
Ironmacannie mill has served the local population for over 400 years as a grain mill until it was converted into a dwelling house in 1990. It sleeps a maximum 10 people.; 3 bedrooms and a fold out sofa bed in each of the two living spaces.
It is decorated very simply with real materials and a rustic palate. Extra attention has been given to the beds to make the nights as delightful as the days.
It has 2 bathrooms and an extra loo.
The machinery room holds much of the original machinery of the mill, which can still turn when the water is diverted to the wheel.
The ancient kiln room door at the back takes you directly onto the river.
The mill is an excelllent example of green energy, powered by a micro generation hydro turbine and heated with a ground source heat pump.

“Batteries fully charged”

Reviewed 12 Aug 2017

After a week in the Hidden Mill with peace and quiet, no traffic noise and the slow pace of country life. This is our second trip to this quirky Mill which we enjoyed just as much as the first. The dog friendly place is an ideal place for relaxing, taking long walks or exploring the surrounding area. The Mill is clean, well kept and very spacious for the number of people that can stay. The Mill is also interesting with the workings of the Mill still in place. There is also a room with a log fire we liked to call the dungeon that had a music system that allowed you to play music loudly with no one to disturb. Waking up on a morning with the noise of the river and the cows in the fields nearby makes for a relaxing start to the day. I would recommend the Hidden Mill to everyone who likes to get away even for the weekend.

Response from the owner We are sorry you had a bad experience, it would have been good if you had spoken to us at the time. We work hard to keep the mill to a very high standard of cleanliness occasionally something can get missed. This is the first review we have had below a 4 *. It is unique perception of the mill. I have seen no evidence of mice, we have saprano bats living in the attic, a protected species. Their droppings can be seen outside the property. We buy in our wood at the rate of £60 a cube. We supply two large boxes enough for 4 days. If people want more we sell replacement for £10, that doesn't cover our costs but helps towards it should people wish to burn alot of wood, which is sometimes the case. I will check the flue, however we had a party in the mill at the end of Feb after these guests report their stay and lit the fire to full heat within 20 mins. We are always happy to help people unfamiliar with wood fired appliances. The oven works well. It has an induction hob however which won't work with all pots, we provide pots that work with induction.. Agreed, the fridge and freezer are fairly small but in line with an ecologically minded energy efficient home. There is also cool rooms in the basement. We offer a woodland sauna experience and a fire bath which are optional extras. They take a huge amount of wood chopped very finely and topped up every half hour for 3 hours to prepare. Given the work involved in these things we take very little profit. I suggest anyone wishing a more balanced opinion look at our reviews here and on air b&b . I'm pleased to say we have been voted super hosts 6 quarters in a row. We hold a 4.9 star average over the last 3 years of full bookings. Please contact us if you would like to ask any questions generated from this review. Warm regards Lorraine
