Description from owner

Description

Raisdale Mill cottages have been converted from a 200 year old barn, so have thick stone walls and original oak beams and perlins. Forge Cottage forms part of a small rural complex which includes an adjacent cottage, the farmhouse and the former water mill. The nearest villages, each with a pub, are Chop Gate and Carlton. There is also a cafe/restaurant with small farm shop at Carlton Bank about 2 miles. There are weekly markets at Helmsley and Stokesley where you will find shops, including a supermarket and petrol station.

The coast at Whitby or Scarborough is about an hours drive away and Saltburn-by-the-Sea is even nearer. You can also have a day out in York or Durham both about an hours drive. "Heartbeat", "Herriot" and Capt Cook" country are nearby.

Other attractions are Castle Howard, Rievaulx Abbey and the North York Moors Steam Railway from Pickering to Whitby. Alternatively you can relax in the peace and tranquility of Raisdale or go for walks directly from the cottage onto the heather moors.

Forge cottage has three bedrooms, a double, a twin and a single and will sleep upto five people. A travel cot is available on request.

Heating is from a log burning fire in the lounge, this heats the radiators and hot water. There is also an electric immersion heater to ensure constant hot water to the taps when the fire is not alight. There is also an electric shower over the bath. Logs for the fire and electricity are included in the price.

To the rear of the cottages, overlooking the stream, there is a patio with chimenea and barbeque area.

“A lovely stay at this wonderful cottage”

Reviewed 31 Jul 2019

We have really enjoyed our stay at forge cottage, just what we wanted for a relaxing family break. Very clean, well equipped cottage with wonderful characteristics. The only thing we would suggest is … More

“Cottage tired and in need of update”

Reviewed 31 Aug 2018

We cannot fault the surroundings of Forge Cottage, which is nestled in the centre of the beautiful and quiet Yorkshire countryside. However, the cottage itself had a number of "quirks" that … More

Response from the owner We are pleased that you enjoyed your holiday in this beautiful part of the North York Moors National Park. Our cottage has been converted from an historic barn and is indeed quirky. This is a positive feature for most of our guests. People especially love the log fire and is the reason many choose to stay here The description of the cottage clearly states that the central heating is run from the log burning fire, so we were very surprised to hear, the day before you left, that you found the idea of using a fire to heat a house "was outside our comfort zone”. Like most dwellings in this area our water supply comes from a natural spring on the moors above our house and is perfectly safe to drink when boiled. .Most guests do not have a problem with using the bottled water we provide. It is unfortunate that you did not understand the three way light switch up the stairs after it had been explained to you. These operate precisely as they were designed to. The large oak beam is an essential and historic part of the building which has been admired by many. If you want a house with “push button central heating” and straight modern lines our cottage is not for you. Raisdale Mill Cottages provide character, charm, peace and tranquillity. Our guests usually leave far more relaxed than when they arrived. Rural life is not picture book perfect but we love it!

“Peaceful, beautiful and relaxing”

Reviewed 2 Sep 2016

I stayed with my three young kids for 3 nights in this charming, cosy property. A car is essential to get around, but for us it was the ideal base for exploring the beautiful North York Moors. Jean was on hand to provide a warm and cheery welcome despite the torrential rain we arrived in. We soon had the log burner going which was a welcome addition even for a day in August! We spent a fabulous 3 days. The place was ideal for letting my three young children roam free and discover the great outdoors. The highlights for them were discovering burried treasure in the enchanted forest and terrorising the local chickens with their water pistols. The location was ideal, we managed to pack in a trip to nearby Whitby for fish and chips and a trip to the North York Moors heritage steam railway. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay and would definitely go back again!

“Our stay was not long enough we didn't want to leave”

Reviewed 4 May 2013

Unfortunately we had only 4 days at Forge Cottage as we had travelled from Australia and we were wanting to see as much of the UK in a month as we possibly could. The owners of Forge Cottage were there to greet us when we arrived and we received a very warm welcome. Forge Cottage met all our needs. The cosy fire kept us warm and the comfortable beds gave us a great night's sleep. The well equipted kitchen supplied everything we needed. It was just lovely to wake each morning to the sound of birds in the trees and the little stream out back. We drove to Stokley and also went to Hemsley for a day and enjoyed the sights of the lovely village. I would highly recommend the cottage for anyone who wants a break away from the hustle and bustle of life. But be prepared- -you won't want to leave!

“Having the splendid Yorkshire Moors at your backdoor.”

Reviewed 18 Oct 2012

I stayed at Forge cottage for fourteen days in September 2012. Forge cottage is one of the two Raisdale Mill Cottages, lying in a small valley in the North York Moors. On a no through road with only two neighbours, the place was everything I expected. I just needed to step outside to find an abundance of nature, wildlife and breathtaking views of the hills and valleys. Besides the sound of singing birds and murmuring water from the small stream beside the terrace, there was just silence. Beautiful small towns, pubs with good food and shopping centers are within a few driving miles. The cottage had everything I needed to have a nice, comfortable holiday: a well equipped kitchen, fine beds, comfortable sofa and chairs, good quality TV and in the evening the warmth of the wood-burning stove. When I arrived, the fire in the wood-burning stove had already been lit; it made me feel welcome indeed! The only thing that wasn't so good was that, at the end of my holiday, I had to leave... And there is this little story. Within a day I had a LAT relation with 'one of the locals' that was living in the ferns near the stream. From his point of view, Forge cottage was not a holiday home but a restaurant. Every morning a big thick pheasant was waiting at the terrace. He made me work like his private waiter. One glimpse of me and he was at my backdoor. If he have had a watch - I'm sure - he would have looked at it impatiently. The pieces of bread I threw at him were measured with a strict view. I almost could hear him thinking: can't you do better, bigger, faster, …more like the ones before you? Dutch eh? Dutch generosity? So if you go to Forge cottage, be prepared! It's not only relaxing, you have to work too....! Ab Deurman Leeuwarden The Netherlands

Response from the owner Thanks for your amusing review and I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay. The pheasant is surviving, so far! The central heating is now running quieter as I have released some air from the system. Looking forward to seeing you again - Jean
