“Absolutely the Best!”
Words can scarcely describe the overall experience we had during our five month stay at Sophie’s house. Everything, and I mean everything was perfect. The property is absolutely gorgeous. As soon as you walk through the hand finished custom doors you feel comfortable, welcome, and relaxed. Moving through the property your eyes are immediately drawn to the original 100 year-old hand painted tiles. The tile mosaics floors in each room are unique and different, not only imparting a dramatic sense of history, but also providing each space with its own individual charm and character. The Spanish colonial architecture of this beautifully restored property will take your breath away. The sweeping arches, stone columns, hand hewn beams, and wooden doors provide an overwhelming sense of history. For me, this served to create a truly relaxing environment ideal for contemplation, refection and creativity. Sophie’s impeccable taste is reflected in the high quality furnishings and local artwork. Unlike so many rental properties where the interior touches appear to be an afterthought, this property is clearly a home for comfortable living. The owner painstakingly saw to every detail. Your toiletries and a change of clothes are all you will need. The house has everything: linens, towels, pots, pans, kitchen utensils, dishes, silverware, you name it. The Yucatan can be hot, particularly in the Summer months, and the home’s design speaks volumes to the early architects who built these properties. The stone walls are easily two feet thick which serves to keep the house cool. The home does have air conditioning, but we never used it. We found the breeze from the ceiling fans, (each room has one), were more than sufficient for staying comfortable. The fabulous backyard pool was just the ticket after a hot afternoon of exploring the city. The covered patio, also with ceiling fans, overlooking the pool is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. During my five month stay in Merida I had the opportunity to personally view many of the homes offered here on Airbnb. I can say without the slightest reservation that this home offers much more than many of the more expensive listings. Sophie’s house is an incredible value. The property is centrally located on a quiet street within easy walking distance to all of Centro’s attractions. Merida is Mexico’s safest city and never once did I ever feel the least bit apprehensive walking through the city at any hour, day or night. Without question the best aspect of our stay in Merida was the graciousness of our host, Sophie. She went above and beyond to ensure we were completely satisfied and that all of our needs were addressed. She was always available for inquiries and her local maintenance team kept the house immaculate and in perfect order. If you are considering a trip to Merida, and I hope you are - it is truly a magical place unlike anywhere else in Mexico - do yourself a favor and seriously consider this property.
“Excellent, peaceful, spacious, within walking distance of the centre”
This was a lovely place to stay with plenty of space for the kids and a great size pool. Both our children (aged 3 and 5) can now swim without aids because it was small enough to not be scary but deep enough that they couldn't cheat! There are several small shops within walking distance and a large hypermarket is a very easy drive away. The town centre is also in asking distance, even for little legs. The air con in both bedrooms is very efficient and made for comfortable sleeping even when it was very hot and the house was generally cool and pleasant and a lovely refuge in the middle of the day. We also enjoyed sitting out on the terrace in the evenings. Finally I'd like to add that the information Sophie sent about the apartment after I had booked was brilliant and very useful, and the agent was also friendly.
“2 lovely months in historic Merida”
Perfects January & February in Sophie's casa, beautifully restored and cared. The house is huge and stays comfortable with only ventilators even when the weather gets warm; more, there are 2 climatisation systems one in each bedroom if needed...But there are nice wooden doors with opening windows that allows natural ventilation of the house and main bedroom. Mosquitos net are in all doors and or opening windows. Well furnished & equipped with good quality, you feel at home. The covered patio with table, hammocks & lounge chairs is great for eating & relaxing. The lit swimming pool is more than welcome when the weather gets warm, after the occasional "norte" of January! Is located just south of centro, it gives you tranquility while being close enough to everything. January is a great time to explore the Yucatan as it is fresher. From 6 January till the end of it, Merida celebrates the anniversary of its founding: which means that each night in el parque Principal there are locals and internationals shows! lot of fun and noise!!! better to get out of el Centro historico for a good sleep! Bus terminal to Progreso is just in between the house and centro historico on calle 62; while others are nearby. February it's carnaval and otherwise there is always something to do or see! "Museo del Mundo Maya" is nice to visit and by the same time to cool off as it is climatise. Last but not the least the owner is very attentive to the welfare of theirs tenants. Would recommend to anyone who would like to discover Mérida !
“Fabulous house and great location!!!”
The house was amazing and pictures did not do it justice!!! The location was perfect - easy walk to the plaza, great central location to many different types of things (i.e. shopping, markets/bazaars, supermarkets, churches, restaurants, and convenient to the airport, etc.). The house has plenty of room for everyone...we were 5 adults staying there and we always seemed to have our own space. The patio/pool area was extremely nice to relax next to after a long day of exploring and we truly had everything we needed to feel right at home. The security of the area added to the quality stay as well. The town's location also allowed for many great day trips and a variety of activities...especially since we had a rental car and could go at our own pace. Thanks to Sophie for her prompt communication and great advice. Also, thanks to Edgar for giving such a great welcoming to my parents when they arrived! I hope to visit Merida again and will definitely look to stay here again!
“Great Mexican experience”
This house has just become available for rent. I think we were some of the first renters. When we were there, the house still lacked a few ammenities such as a microwave. Also, internet service was spotty. The owners were going to be vacationing there right after we left and will be adding a microwave, a few more lounge chairs and other comfort items. It also could have been a bit cleaner and I am sure the owners will be addressing that also. When these little issues are addressed the house will rate an exceptional 5 stars. Location is just south of the Zocalo and accessable to anything and everything you could possibly want in Merida. We were there for 3 weeks and did not run out of things to do. This is an old colonial house so it has beautiful pasta tile floors and high ceilings throughout. If you want to experience todays true Mexican life and don't need the glitz of the high rent district. please consider this house for you vacation.
Response from the owner Hello Bob and Jeanne, Thank you for posting a review. You are right we began renting our house last summer and you where our 5th guest. We will consider all your comments to make our house more comfortable for futur guests. We just returned from Merida 2 days ago and as you said, we added some items. We installed a new TV and DVD player, some lounge chairs and kitchen tools. Unfortunately, we did not have time to buy a microwave...maybe next time. Regarding the internet sevice, we changed the rooter and it now works in each room of the house, we also get the signal outside. Thanks again for taking time to write a review. Sophie
“A little paradise!”
I stayed at Sophie's house in Merida twice with some friends. The house is very beautiful, and huge! The two rooms are really far apart, and both have toilets, which is perfect for privacy. The kitchen has everything you need to cook, and there's a nice dinning room. But the real highlight of the house is the backward. There's a part of it that has a ceiling and hammocs, which is perfect to relax when the sun is too hot, and even when it rains. And to pool is amazing too! Apart from that, the house is well-located and you can easily walk to the center and the shops and markets to buy some food. I had a great time there both times and wouldn't hesitate to go back anytime!
“Peaceful Merida Home”
We highly recommend this beautiful house. We stayed for almost a month and were extremely comfortable, which is important to us because we are a family with young children, and end up spending a lot of time at home. The house has everything you need, is spacious and private. We enjoyed being out side on the terrace, relaxing in the hammocks and in the pool. Sophie and Fred are gracious hosts and available by email for any questions. The house is located in the centro, in a regular neighborhood. We loved that in a short walk, we could get delicious, and cheap food from a nearby restaurant, yummy popsicles from a paleteria, and tamales on the corner in the mornings. We would definitely stay here again if we return to Merida.
