“Brill place to stay.”
The accommodation is completely homely and the setting is delightful. The Garden at the Garden Flat is a real treat at the front, and with a fantastic view north this really is a superb place to stay. Richard and Dawn made a real effort to ensure we had everything we could possibly need for our stay and we highly commend them for their attention to detail - everything is just as comfortable as can be! Within a short walk you can easily access a good range of shops or The Pentland Hills. There is a regular bus service into the city centre and free car parking at the rail station for trains into Edinburgh or Glasgow. There is also a very good pub only a short distance away. All in all a great place to stay, charming hosts with lots of places to explore and things to do!
“Wonderful month at MidKinleith Farm”
I spent the month of May at MidKinleith farm and was completely happy. Richard and Dawn were very welcoming and patient with a novice traveler. The flat was extremely comfortable and had everything I needed. I would strongly recommend it as a place to stay for anybody who wants a quiet location with easy access to the city. If you are fit, enjoy walking, and are not in a hurry it can definitely be enjoyed without a vehicle however for a short visit or for visitors who are not particularly athletic I would recommend renting one as as the hill is steep and it typically took me about an hour to get into the city centre without one. Location: The flat is located in the rural outskirts of Edinburgh and is at the top of a hill with an excellent view of the city. I especially enjoyed the night view of the city lights. I did not rent a car for my trip and I had no trouble getting to and from the flat but it is a rather steep half a mile climb and I worked up a decent sweat climbing it every day. Walking in the hills is as easy as going out the door and walking down the road and the Waters of Leith walkway (a trail through the city) can be accessed at the base of the hill and is a very nice walk. I particularly enjoyed walking along the canal and aqueduct. Amenities: The flat had all the amenities listed in the description and I did not have trouble with any of them. Self-Catering: There is a very small grocery at the base of the hill, and a bus stop for the #44 line that goes straight through the city centre with stops along Princes St. (the touristy part of town) where the main rail station (Waverley) is located. If the small grocery doesn't have everything you need there is an asda (Wal-mart) along the #44 line about midway between Currie and Princes St.
“A great base for a visit in central Scotland.”
Richard and Dawn are the most welcoming and friendly of hosts. Their knowledge of the area around Edinburgh is comprehensive and they went out of their way to answer all our queries about transport, visits, shopping, eating out, etc.. When we arrived we found a comprehensive welcome pack including food and drink items to start us off. We loved the flat as a holiday home. The flat itself is spacious and comfortable with all the amenities we could wish for and all in first class condition. Being located on the northeren slopes of the Pentland Hills the flat enjoys spectacular views over Edinburgh and the Forth Valley, and across to Fife and the Ochill Hills beyond. We could park the car right outside the flat door which makes for terrific ease of access. The flat is surrounded by open fields and farmland helping to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility in a rural setting and yet just a couple of minutes drive from an excellent rail and bus network giving easy access to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Shops, pubs and grub are just down the road in Currie itself. Not easy to single out one thing we liked best about this visit but, the cosy accommodation, the quiet location, the ease of access to the city centres, the Pentland Hills walks and cycle tracks from the doorstep, road and rail connections in all directions and the reassurance of Richard and Dawn's thoughtful suggestions, all of these made this a really enjoyable experience and we thoroughly recommend this as a great place to stay.
We stayed at Midkinleith Farm in late august and had a wonderful time. Its right in the middle of the Pentland Country Park so fabulous views and walks and only a 20 minute bus ride from Edinburgh. Although its on a hill which equates to a 30 minute walk but its worth it as the views are spectacular. Like us you can just rest and enjoy them on your way. The cottage itself is lovely. Very clean and exceptionally cosy. All mod cons and Dawn very kindly provided us with a few essentials to get us started. A real find if you want the best fo both worlds and Dawn and Richard couldnt be more helpful, friendly or kind. The only thing to remember is that there is no oven but there is a micro wave and everything else you could want including a slow cooker. Happy for anyone to contact me with any questions.
“Too good for just one visit”
I stayed for two weeks in this gem of a cottage during the wettest possible Scottish summer weather. However, despite the rain, I found a really warm welcome from Richard and Dawn and lovely self contained accommodation which ticked all the right boxes - including the most spectacular views both day and night over the Forth and even as far as Fife. The walk to the bus is a bit of a trek (and I have to admit I used the car) but the bus service is tremendous and got me in to the centre of town very quickly. The supermarket adjoining the village garage had all the essentials including a good selection of wines, cheeses, ready to heat meals and freshly baked breads. I would definitely visit again.
Accommodation perfect in everyway. Everything you needed there for you. Beautiful views perfect peace.
Me and my girlfriend had the most beautiful time in midkinleith farm! The place is absolutely beautiful, perfectly located to enjoy both the nature and city of Edinburgh. The place itself is great: very spacious, very clean, and most important, our host were fantastic! Richard and Dawn have been very thoughtful with us, answering all our questions and shared their experience with us. I could not recommend more highly of this place! Thanks again for everything! We will be back!
“A gem in the countryside!”
We felt so lucky to have found this wonderful apartment elevated on a hill just outside the city of Edinburgh. And Mr. and Mrs. Spencer treat you like you are part of the family! They do go above and byeond for their guests, and their warm hospitality really added to our stay. The beds are very comfortable, and the apartment fully equipped and spacious. The whole experience of staying at MidKinleith farm offered far more than we expected! We even found ourselves admitting that we actually really enjoyed the walk up the hill (about 15-20mins) from the local bus station. And if you find that you don't feel like taking it on right away, there are a few fabulous pubs in the village offering plenty of delicious liquid strength! Our only regret was not having enough time to hike the lovely hills behind the farm. But, that we will have to save for another day... Highly recommended.
After our stay in July 2010, we returned for a few days over New Year 2011. As before, Richard and Dawn were the perfect hosts, welcoming us as old friends. The accomodation was warm and inviting, as were the supplies of food essentials. The whole family gathered round to support us when my wife was injured on a walk. The cottage is very comfortable and has all the ammeneties needed to enjoy your stay. I am glad we went back and will continue to use this little gem on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
A lovely little hide away minutes from Edinburgh. Extremely comfortable. Highly recommended.
