““A truly wonderful holiday in excellent accommodation supported”
Having never visited Crete before we approached the experience with an open mind and the desire to experience as much as we could of the essence of the island. The position of the apartment is splendid with wide ranging views across the surrounding countryside that capture the flavor of the farming community and the geography of the area. On arrival, Helen and Sean were so welcoming that we felt immediately at home. They offer their help and advice readily and understand implicitly that it is your holiday and they will do everything in their power to make it enjoyable for you. The apartment is of the highest standard being clean, spacious and well appointed. The balconies offer the opportunity to sit outside and eat or just to enjoy the view. Helen and Sean cleaned and serviced the apartment regularly throughout our stay. It became our home for the week and we felt very comfortable and at ease. Helen and Sean are excellent at sharing their experience and discussing possible itineraries. They are never intrusive but are always available. Through their help we were able to explore a wide are of western and southern Crete finding locations that we could have easily bypassed if we had been too keen on the guidebook. We recommend this accommodation at the highest level possible. On its own the apartment is lovely and excellent value but when you add to it the attitude of Helen and Sean it moves into the exceptional. As hosts they have that singular perception of knowing when to help and support and equally importantly, knowing when to be inconspicuous. We so enjoyed their company and benefitted hugely from their advice. We admired their attitude to life and the lifestyle that they have created through hard work and a commitment to the highest standards. We look forward to another visit and to renew our friendship with their lovely animals.
“A Wonderful Holiday”
That time of year again to start thinking of holidays. Where to go? And how to better the last one, if you can. But how can we better the warm welcome we got from Sean and Helen on arrival at there beautiful home. What a lovely place, set just outside of the village Xamoudochori. And to wake up every morning to the view of all the Olive groves and at night to look up at the clear sky to see all the stars lit up just like a Christmas tree. What a perfect place to relax and recharge, where all the the local restaurant are excellent and plenty of places to go and see. If you are not sure where to go, then as usual Sean and Helen will be there to help and ensure you have a great time. We had a great time and always talking about it with our friends and family. A great place with great hosts. Well can we better it next year? Its going to be very hard to beat.
“A fabulous place!”
We recently spent a wonderful 9 days based at arete which gave us access by car to all of western Crete. The owners, Sean & Helen gave us a very warm welcome on our arrival and furnished us with a sample of the local wine, some raki and eggs from their own chickens - what a start! The next morning Sean and dogs took us on a walk around their land through the olive groves which was delightful and were happy to help us with any advice we needed during our stay - but were never intrusive. The local village is a short stroll away and both Helen & Sean have made the effort to learn Greek and are totally accepted in the community where they have made many friends. Arete is very comfortable with everything one needs and has wonderful uninterrupted views of the olive groves and orange trees. We came home totally relaxed and will certainly recommend arete to our friends.
“Excellent off the track base to explore western Crete”
We really enjoyed our stay here. We were looking for a quiet place away from the tourist masses but at the same time close to nice beaches and the mountains. Arete delivers all that and is an excellent base to explore all the natural and cultural treasures of western Crete. Owners Helen and Sean are very helpful, will give a personal touch to your stay, and know every corner of the region. They are full of good advice and valuable tips (what to visit when, where to eat), and are eager to show you around. For instance, Sean gives an excellent tour of the Battle of Crete theatre. A firm recommend.
“Greatest Hospitality in the World!”
We had the pleasure of staying at arete for 8 days in early October. Helen and Sean are the most gracious hosts and their warmth and hospitality can't be beat! Before we left, Helen gave us a heads up about a general strike, which gave us time to rebook some flights and saved us a huge hassle at the airport. This was a wonderful gesture on her part that we very much appreciated. Because the apartments are in their home, Helen and Sean are right there in case you need help, advice, a map, conversation, or just about anything else. Our room was clean and comfortable and the kitchen was well-equipped with everything we needed for a great stay, including eggs, olive oil and wine when we arrived. The house is an easy 30 mins drive to Chania, and 5 minutes to beaches. Being in a beautiful village, staying here is the best way to experience the real Crete. All the people we met were wonderful and the food was fantastic. We loved the peace and quiet at arete, with the only sounds being those of nature: breeze, the animals, and most importantly, no traffic! If you need to decompress, this is the place for you. We look forward to returning as soon as we can, and will recommend arete to all of our friends and family.
“One of the best holiday we have had.”
A very warm welcome from really nice people. Helen's cooking was wonderful. Very peaceful location. Shop & taverna's not far away. Helpful information on walking Crete and days out. Appartments are very clean and tidy. Beautiful views from the balcony over orange and olive groves to the mounains behond. Get Sean to take you on the battle tour its very interesting. All in all a great couple.
“A Fantastic Stay”
My husband and I stayed 6 nights at arete Self Catering apts, and only wished we had more time to spend there. The apt is fully equipped if you wish to prepare meals or a quick snack, (we did), and the beds are extremely comfortable. The views from our 2 balconies are spectacular. Two things make arete apts very special. One is its location - Xamoudochori, a small, authentic Greek town, (complete with local taverna), about 20 minutes by car from Chania, overlooking olive and orange groves. The second thing that makes it compelling is Sean and Helen, the hosts, who could not have been more helpful. They are not at all intrusive, but know a phenomenal amount about the local area and gave very valuable tips on places to drive, hike, eat (the taverna at Ravdoucha beach in particular), and swim. Sean and Helen have integrated into the local Greek community - both speak Greek, (Helen's is impeccable), and are greeted by their fellow Xamoudochorians as if they had lived in the community all their lives. This said, being English speaking meant there was no cross-communication when we spoke to them, asking for directions or insights. My husband is a professor and he was attending a conference in Chania. We would love to return to arete apts for several months on a sabbatical. Indeed, it is our intention to do so. It is the perfect place to decompress, unwind and write a book!
“Hospitality and perfect place!”
We love our stay with Helen and Sean and their animals. The house is very well situated, beautiful view, realli nice food . A lot to do in this side of Crete and many advices from them. Sorry for my english, we are french.
What can I say about our time at arete - all the usual cliches - unforgettable, memorable, fantastic etc. All these superlatives don't really do it justice. Me, my father, my uncle and his partner spent a week at arete in May to follow in the footsteps of Grandad/Dad who fought in the Battle of Crete in 1941. Arete made the perfect base for exploring some of the key locations - Tavronitis, Maleme and Hill 107 being a very close by. Apart from a perfect setting, Sean and Helen's hospitality, friendliness and enthusiasm were unrivalled. From Sean's personal tour of some of the key sites to Helen's delicious baking and arete's own olive oil, the whole week was brilliant. We'll definitely be back!!
Fantastic setting, great view over olive groves to the mountains beyond. Ideal location for trips to Chania and Western Crete. Helen & Sean are the perfect hosts and inspire you with their knowledge of Crete, culture, ecology and Loggerhead Turtles. The apartment is all you could want, everything is spotless and works. Book it - you won't be disappointed.
