Description from owner

Description

The Beacon is a stone built detached house which stands in it's own grounds. Surrounded by a walled garden on three sides with a hedge to the front giving privacy to the occupants. At the front of the house there is a garden offering unlimited views over Coldingham Bay and you can see the fishing village of Eyemouth in the distance At the rear of the house there is enough parking for four cars. The village of St Abbs is popular with scuba divers, walkers and cyclists. It has an interesting harbour with cafes where you can enjoy a drink and a crab sandwich and watch the world go by. If you are feeling energetic you can walk up to St. Abbs Head which is part of the National Trust and admire the lighthouse and large groups of gannets and puffins. Looking north on a clear day you can see up the Firth of Forth towards the Bass Rock at North Berwick, Edinburgh and the Fife coast. There is a lovely sandy beach at Coldingham Bay which is only a five minutes walk along the coastal path. The beach is patrolled by the RLSS so families can swim and surf safely.

On the ground floor is the sitting room, dining room, kitchen, morning room and the utility room. The sitting room is very spacious and has a television. The dining room has a television and a traditional coal fire, very cosy on those cooler autumn nights. The kitchen is well equipped with a microwave, fridge, cooker and utensils. The morning room is used as a games room with a large selection of jigsaws, cards and board games. In the utility room there is a freezer and a washing machine with an outside drying line in the garden.
The house has full central heating and is double glazed throughout. Children and well behaved pets are welcome and all bed linen, electricity and heating is included in the rental price.
Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, one twin bedroom and a single bedroom. There is a bathroom with a toilet and a shower over the bath. Another toilet with a wash hand basin stands on its own next door. There is also a outside toilet if you get caught short while hanging out the washing.

St. Abbs is the perfect base to allow you to explore both the Scottish Borders and Northumberland. Edinburgh, Scotlands capital, is about an hours drive north from St Abbs. Edinburgh is a beautiful city which is steeped in history with lots to do for both young and old. The famous city of Newcastle upon Tyne is about an hour and fifteen minutes drive to the south and definitely worth a visit.
More locally visit the village of Coldingham and see Coldingham Priory and then enjoy a drink and a meal in one of the local pubs. Visit Eyemouth which has a working harbour, discover the history of smuggling in the area at Gunsgreen House or visit the museum and learn about the Eyemouth fishing disaster which happened on Black Friday, the fourteenth of October, 1881. Alternatively, enjoy a unique opportunity to feed the seals from the harbour side. Eyemouth has a four lane 25m swimming pool with a smaller learning pool or why not swim in the sea from the sandy beach at the promenade.
If you do not want to drive both Coldingham and Eyemouth can be reached by walking the Berwickshire Coastal Path which starts at Cockburnspath and continues to the historic town of Berwick upon Tweed and offers amazing views across the North Sea. Whales and dolphins can occasionally be see as you walk.

“Weekend at the Beacon”

Reviewed 12 May 2021

We spent a long weekend at the Beacon in StAbbs. The house is great with fantastic views. David was a great host, very friendly and available to assist us. The house and area had everything we needed. Waking up to the sound of the sea, birds and that view was tonic for the soul. Our two kids loved it and none of us wanted to leave. We will be back. Thank you.
