"...like a pomegranate cut in two; close to the sea but with an air of the countryside; half of it crammed onto a rocky spur, half spread out at its feet; with many steps serving as peacemaker between the two halves, and clouds in the sky between one bell-tower and another, as breathless as a dispatch rider for the King's Cavalrymen...". This is how Gesualdo Bufalino describes Modica, jewel of Sicilian Baroque, crossroads of culture, today one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites and famous for its ancient recipe for chocolate. Modica, birthplace of Salvatore Quasimodo, Nobel Prize in Literature, the "city of lace" as it has been called, is divided into Upper Modica and Lower Modica and is picturesquely spread out over the two sides of a wide rocky gorge. To stay in Modica means rediscovering forgotten emotions, walking slowly through the cobbled lanes, going up and down the ancient steps, catching glimpses of fine nobles' houses with elaborate stone and wrought iron balconies, hidden artisan workshops, picturesque views of churches and rooftops, secret gardens with grottoes and prickly pear plants

      Great flat in Modica

Left on 04/12/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We stayed for six day -the first three days together with two friends of us, the last three days we had the whole flat for ourselves. This flat is ideal for two couples since it has two fully equipped rooms. The terrace on the upper floor was georgeus. Amalia took very good care of us- nothing was a problem! We enjoyed our stay in Modica a lot much aowing to this fabulous flat.

      Wonderful Villa

Left on 04/11/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We stayed at anime a Sud for 2 weeks in March. The villa is very nice with an excellent view of Modica. We especially enjoyed walking the streets of Modica and visiting our two favorite restaurants-Smile(pizza) and La Laconda. Both are within 10 minutes walking distance Be prepared to walk many steps to get up town or downtown. If you want to experience what it is like to live in a small Sicilian town, then this is the place to stay. This was our first time visiting Sicily and we look forward to coming back again.

An ecellent house with a view

Left on 01/07/2013 for a stay in May 2012

We spend almost 3 month (april-june) in the house at the hills of Modica and enjoyed it very much. The house is well equiped, served and artisticly decorated. Every morning it is a joy to wake-up and have this beautiful view over Modica. A nice and cosy town with many small streets, stairs, monuments and restaurants, not too far from other cultural highlights in this corner of Sicilia, neither to far from the beach, even by bus.
Staying a longer period gives the opportunity to see the town awakening in the spring and fully living towards the summer, expriencing also the various festivities.

A Perfect apartment in Every Way

Left on 10/12/2012 for a stay in October 2012

Anime a Sud is an absolutely perfect apartment. It is located right in the heart of old Modica with easy access to the entire city and the surrounding region including Ragusa Isla, Noto, Scicli and Siracusa. We (a couple, although the two bedrooms and two baths easily accommodate 4 people comfortably) spent eight fabulous nights there. The apartment is beautifully appointed and fully equipped. Luca, the owner, is an artist, and his good taste is reflected in the furnishings and art. The view from the deck is magical. We have rented many apartments and houses all over the world and it is hard to think of any that are better than this one. We recommend it highly and would return in an instant.

      A hidden gem in Modica

Left on 10/01/2012 for a stay in September 2012

I can't recommend this apartment highly enough. It's stylish and beautiful. It was wonderful to sit on the terrace in the evening, drinking delicious wine, and watching the lights of the town twinkle below and around you.
Amalia was so helpful and recommended lots of superb restaurants and shops to visit. You are definitely not stuck for somewhere new to try every night of the week.
The apartment is situated up a steep hillside and there are over 250 steps to climb to get back from the main street, but it's a great way to walk off all that delicious gelato !!

      Memorable stay in Modica

Left on 09/30/2012 for a stay in September 2012

This is a beautiful apartment with a view to die for! We had several meals at home with the French doors open to that magnificent view. Amalia was extremely helpful and the apartment is decorated with great taste. We especially appreciated the wines that were available to purchase right in the apartment. My husband & I were in the wine business and this was a great selection of reds and whites from three of Sicily's top producers. Modica itself is a little challenging because of all the steps, 120 to the grocery store. The main street has some nice shops and goes much further than we first thought. The town is known for its chocolate and there are lots of places to sample and buy.

It's like living in a film set

Left on 09/28/2012 for a stay in September 2012

We have a wonderful 10 days at anime a Sud. The view was stunning, especially at night. It really was like living with a back drop from a film set as your view.
The "public" areas of the apartment are fairly small, and I would imagine that 4 adults living in it might be quite "cosy", but it was perfect for 3.
The wine selection (available for purchase) was delicious, the art and objet d'art were all beautiful. The whole living space was thoughtfully and very tastefully presented.
It should be noted that you can't get a car to the property so pack lightly because you'll have to carry your luggage from a nearby street corner (about 3-4 minutes walk). It should also be noted that there are lots of steps both above and below the apartment.
Because of the design of Modica, houses are very close together so living at anime a Sud is literally moving into the locality, and you are immediately in the centre of local life. We loved it and really enjoyed saying Good morning to all our lovely neighbours, but it's not the quietest neighbourhood.
Anyway, if you're looking for a real taste of Sicily in fantastic surroundings and a very comfortable accommodation we can thoroughly recommend anime a Sud. We'll definitely be back, and are also really interested in Luca's new (and larger) property which is launching in summer 2013 I believe.
Thanks also to amalia for the welcome, all the tasty treats and the translation service!
Finally, Caffe Del arte on Corso Umberto - fantastic Caffe Freddo!
      Enjoy and Ciao!

      beautiful flat

Left on 09/04/2012 for a stay in August 2012

This is a beautiful flat in the heart of old Modica, just five minutes walk from the cathedral. The flat itself is very comfortable and interesting with many of the owner's art works and collected art on the walls. There are two bedrooms with lovely beds and two terraces, one of them very small, but both with stunning views of this lovely city. The location is ideal, in a residential area down a small cobbled street, with local neighbours, which felt very authentic. The cooking and washing facilities are modern. Luca, the manager is helpful via email when sorting out the booking and payment, and amalia who manages the flat onsite is extremely helpful and nothing is too much bother. We were very warmly welcomed and taken care of.
I have only a couple of small niggles. One is that although the location is generally quiet, we had loud (but pleasant) live music from somewhere nearby on 4 out of the 11 nights we stayed. This started mid evening and went into the small hours. We went with our baby daughter so were in all evening, which made this annoying, although if you are the kind of person who stays out late or isn't overly committed to total peace and quiet, this wouldn't be a major problem. I also don't know if this was just a seasonal feature during august or whether it happens every weekend.
The second niggle was the 5 minute walk from where you park to the flat. If you have a lot of luggage and regular heavy shopping, this is a mild annoyance.
I would overall strongly recommend this place.

Thank you very much for your great feedback, Robert!
We are very happy you had a delightful stay...
As regards live music, even if August is usually a month of fiestas and concerts in Sicily, it's the first time that it is heard from the house since it is located in a very secluded and quiet alley..
It's a pity you did not alert us, as we would have immediately got any useful information in order to understand if it was a public event (but in this case it has to stop in the early night by law) or it was coming from a neighbor (and in this case we could have asked him to stop and respect the quietness of our guests).

      Thoroughly reccomend this stunning appartment

Left on 09/02/2012 for a stay in July 2012

When we arrived, after being met by amalia, as we walked in my friend Said "Oh my God, i'ts amazing, thank you so much for inviting us!"
No criticisms at all, the place was perfect with everything you could need provided, from clothes pegs , to olive oil , to the stunning view, and extremely comfortable beds! everything had been thought of. We had a perfect holiday here, there were no tourists, everyone was friendly, all Italian, really felt like we were in proper Italy, not some naff Brits abroad place.
I reccomend the amazing ice cream. and you will earn it , as there are a lot of steep steps to walk back up to the appartment. Had great suppers in Pizza Smile, a short walk uphill (at least it's downhill on the way back!) and we really enjoyed the wine tasting with Lunch at Planeta, organised for us by amalia. Also Marzamemi a fishing town 40 mins drive away is worth visiting, lovely fresh lunch at the spaghetteria with prossecco sitting on a deck looking out at bobbing boats!
Amalia was brilliant when we had some holiday mishaps (left Glasses , hat and money behind at vineyard, and locked keys in car on last day!) She went out of her way to help us, and didn't even roll her eyes!! I would definitely go back here except there is too much more of the world to see! Dolly

      Perfect relaxation

Left on 08/25/2012 for a stay in August 2012

We instantly felt at home and totally relaxed. The kitchen was well equipped and came with basic necessity like olive oil, salt and coffee. The house also has a very good selection of reasonable, local wine. We took advantage of all that, enjoying the incredible view from the terrace with the wine and our self-cooked meals with super fresh fish from the nearby coast. We also got useful suggestions on restaurants and other places of interests. A really lovely place.

I've never written a review before, but this time I felt like doing to thank Luca and amalia.

The house was even better than the photos indicated. Creatively furnished with little touches to make it more enjoyable. The house is situated on a hillside with a wonderful view of the town of Modica. Amalia was very welcoming and gave us so many tips on how to get the most out of our stay in the area. Supermarket, fabulous focaccia shop, restaurants and shops all within walking distance; the house is on a hillside so guests do need to be comfortable with climbing steps and walking on stoned pathways. We will come back as there is so much to explore in this part of Sicily.

From the moment we arrived amalia greeted us so warmly and was so patient. The house is beautifully kept, everything is top quality and when you walk onto the balcony or terrace the view is just lovely both during the day and in the evening. What the "anime a sud" website promised was definitely delivered!! It might not be ideal for older travellers and people with special physical needs because of the walk to get to the house. Parking close by might also be a problem especially during the weekend.

Amazing experience in this cosy gem, nestled in the old Modica

Left on 02/12/2012 for a stay in December 2011

Amine a Sud was one of our stops during our trip in Sicily. We spent 3 lovely nights in this cosy apartment, nestled in the old part of Modica. Luca Giannini, the owner, is as friendly as helpful and his advices and tips were of great value during our stay. Special thanks to amalia who welcomed us very warmly and suggested us some interesting places to visit all around.
Amine a Sud is located in the old and genuine part of Modica. You have breathtaking views on the city from almost all rooms. It is decorated with a lot of taste and the atmosphere is unbelievably charmful. It has an easy walking distance to all commodities and parking is possible on the main road up the hill, 300 meters away.
All in all, an absolute gem where we shall stay in during our next trip to Sicily!

You have to be prepared to walk, and its best if steps are not an issue, then I highly recommend you stay here. Having wine at sunset with the view of the town is something quite special. You will wake every morning with a big grin on your face and pinch yourself that you are staying here.

Great food in town, or buy some fresh items and try your hand at cooking in the wonderfully furnished kitchen.

The most beautiful appartment in a gorgeous, unspoilt town

Left on 12/24/2011 for a stay in December 2011

This is a really beautiful appartment - small, but furnished very well with lots of artwork, extremely comfortable beds, and a small, but well appointed kitchen. The view is fantastic, and it is only 100+ steps up to a supermarket, butcher, and pasticceria; and 100+ down to the main street of Modica Bassa (but we could park quite closeby, up a mere 20 steps!). We stayed there in December, and had two gloriously sunny days, and one very wet one when we happily read in the appartment in between excursions into the town. Amalia met us as planned, late because our flight was delayed, and welcomed us with biscotti, chocolate and a basket of fruit, and lots of local advice on where to go and where to eat. Laura was an excellent guide to Siracusa - very enthusiastic and informative. We seemed to be the only tourists in Modica, and everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming.

The furniture is of good quality and tasfully aranged. But the view over Modica is the best. The only remark we have is the accessebility. The house can only be reached by foot. For us no problem, but for elderly people not very suitable. Overall it was a outstanding expierience, together with the city of Modica it is very much worth the stay.

While I hesitate to let anyone else in on the secret, if you are looking for a perfect spot for romance, or just exploring southern Sicily, anime a sud is truly the "soul of the south", and a special treat in every respect.
Waking up every morning to the peel of the church bells, starting your day with pastry and the morning coming over the hills of Modica - pure heaven.
The rooms are spacious, bathrooms and kitchen well equipped; fun to cook at home but also fun (and great exercise, mind you) to walk up and down the streets of Modica discovering the great restaurants of the city.

      Romantic getaway

Left on 08/23/2011 for a stay in August 2011

Had a wonderful time while staying at "The Sud" - it has a beautiful view of Modica and a wonderful rooftop patio and balcony overlooking the city. My boyfriend and I cooked most of our meals at home and found a fantastic little butcher, and corner grocery just up a few flights of stairs from the apartment. The pictures of the apartment are lovely online, and it is even lovelier in person. A couple of things to note: you have to park your car about a 5 minute walk from the apartment as the alley is too narrow to drive directly to the unit. This walk was easy for us as we are fit, but it is hilly and steep, so my advice is to pack very light as you need to carry your suitcases from your car. Also recommend that you bring a watergun to fend off the cute kitty who wants to come into the kitchen when you are cooking. The kitty is adorable, but she's covered with fleas, so best not to invite inside! Modica is wonderful, and "The Sud" has everything you could need for a great vacation - lots of art books and mags to read, beautiful artwork, even a beach umbrella for a day at the beach! It's clean and very well kept. A couple of noteables: favourite beach was Marina de Modica (less people; great sandy beach and quiet); favourite restaurant was La Gazza Ladra; favourite chocolate: Antica Dolceria Bonajuto. We took a day trip to Valley of the Temples and it was incredible! Amalia was wonderful with her suggestions of cooking class and beaches to go to. She's a great help when you check in and was super friendly and responsive. Loved this location!!

We had the pleasure of spending a week at anime a Sud in early July. We couldn't have chosen a more delightful place to stay. Luca attended to our every need prior to our arrival, and amalia greeted us when we got there, and armed us with loads of recommendations/tips to help get the most of our stay. Also there was a lovely basket of fruit, fresh drinks and other goodies waiting for us.. a very nice touch. The apartment itself is beautiful, artful, and loaded with amenities - we felt indulged! The town of Modica is charming, and a fantastic base from which to explore the rest of the baroque towns in the area. Luca was also very helpful in coordinating some activities for us while we were there. The cooking class at Modicarte with Maurizo and his wonderful family was a real highlight, and highly recommended! I wholeheartedly suggest you make anime a Sud (or Luca's new property, "Orta", scheduled to open next year) your lodging of choice when in Modica.

My wife and I spent 2 nights and 2 days at anime a Sud in Modica Sicily, and we were enchanted. The flat, a tastefully-furnihed duplex with artistic touch and modern facilities is greatly located in the old town with a fantastic view at the town which you can enjoy from the balcony and from the roof-top terrasse. The owner Luca and his colleague amelia who takes care of the checkin/service on stay are extremely friendly and come across as very honest and kind persones. Was a true pleasure to stay there and enjoy city-walking and the good & cheap restaurants that are located nearby. Great experience for the value, in a fantastic region.

Great base for exploring the baroque towns of southern Sicily!

Left on 07/07/2011 for a stay in June 2011

Anime a Sud was as beautiful in real life as the pictures on the website. It was the perfect combination of practical comfort and artistic taste. The kitchen was equipped nicely for cooking meals when we were too tired to eat out.

The only caveat I would offer is that this is not the best choice for travellers who have lots of suitcases since the closest parking is behind San Giorgio church and there is a short walk to get to the apartment. But the walk is easy if you have carry on rolling luggage.

We used it as a base to explore Siracusa, Ragusa, ispica, Noto,, Scicli, and of course, beautiful Modica. We also enjoyed the beaches at Pozzallo, Marina di Modica, and Marina di Ragusa

Thank you Luca and amalia for making our stay at anime a Sud a highlight of our vacation in Sicily. Modica is in a perfect location to explore south-east Sicily, and anime a Sud is a jewel.

We appreciate the effort made to welcome our friends and family. Amalia was most helpful. The apartment is contemporary, well-appointed and elegant - the art, photographs and the views from the rooms, balcony and terrace will be with us forever.

We felt embraced in the heart of Modica, nested between Modica alta and Modica bassa, delighting in the daily culture, food, art and architecture. We will recommend anime a Sud to anyone who asks if we know a perfect place to stay in Sicily.

A lovely place to stay in every respect. The apartment itself is charming with lovely views. It is better than the the photos on the web site. A great deal of thought and planning has been put into making every need filled for the visitor. The kitchen is fully fitted. Salt, pepper, oil, vinegar and other necessary food items are available. The towels and sheets are first quality. Everything is spotlessly clean. Best of all, the decor is extremely tasteful and soothing. And everything worked--all the appliances, air conditioning, etc. The water was hot and plentiful in the showers. The washing machine was very welcome and there was a special rack for hanging clothes. We were met and walked to the apartment, given maps and all sorts of information to make our stay perfect. We had no trouble parking our car within a short walk of the apartment. I cannot imagine a nicer place to spend time in Modica, or anywhere for that matter. Definitely five stars all around.

Anime e Sud was the perfect base to explore eastern Sicily on all accounts - it is a charming and artistically decorated house set inside the hillside village of Modica. 7 adults stayed very comfortably in the very well furnished apartment. Even small touches like plush towels and high quality bedding/sheets added to the experience but the highlight is the amazing balcony view - always a joy to come home to and wake up to. Loved it! Recommend it for the location, the house itself, the balcony view and Sicily is awesome as well!

A unique place in a lovely city

Left on 05/12/2011 for a stay in April 2011

We stayed for 12 days in this lovely apartment in the old upper town of Modica. Arriving was straight forward with the help of amalia. Despite not having a dedicated parking it was never a problem to find a parking space in the street nearby.
The welcome fruit basket and a selection of local sweets was a nice surprise and introduction to the local specialities and chocolate.
The location is great (only a 10 minute walk to the main street) and the views are fantastic over the whole city. Our 1 year old enjoyed looking at the views through the balcony door as well as the pictures of Pablo Picasso in the bathroom :-)
The private terrace on the second floor provided an excellent spot for the siesta.
When booking we were a bit concerned about how easy is it to get to and from the apartment with a pram, but at the end it was fairly straight forward to navigate the narrow streets and the few steps that were in the way.
The location, the views, the thoughtful furnishing and lovely decoration and artwork make this apartment unique.
Thank you Luca and amalia for a wonderful stay.

I can only recommend the place. It is located in a quiet quarter of town with good infrastructure like a small supermarket, pharmacy etc. in walking distance. Descending to the center more shopping facilities like boutiques etc. will take 10 - 15 mins on foot by many beautiful staircases or probably 5 mins by car.

At first glance, we saw the photos on the internet were no fake, and we were stunned by the spectacular view of the city. After a few days we felt almost like home. What we remember is a place which has a very easy and relaxed way of being beautiful, comfortable and friendly to the environment at the same time.

It´s easy to describe anime a Sud and its managers: fantastic. I think it´s no possible to find another rental with this kind of service, care, cleariness, details and style, all in a stunning scenery which is Modica. All, beginning with the e- mail communication with Luca, the check in and amalia´s introduction, the courtesy handicraft biscuits and chocolate from Modica, the views, the village, the restaurants, the "modicani", the facilities of the house and, absolutely, the style and beauty of the house, become perfect.
We´ve never seen any hosts with this kind of treatment with their guests: friendly, confident, absolutely paid attention of any need you could have. Amalia waited for us a lot of time due the traffic jam, and got us to the restaurant she booked for us ("Osteria dei Sapori perduti": very recommended), sent us messages taking care we have slept well...
The only negative point I could make was the sicilians´crazy way of drive!! But this is part of the essence of Sicily, I fear.
I couldn´t imagine any better place to stay in Sicily, as the region is very beautiful, and I haven´t stayed in a more charming apartament (and we have stayed in several countries around Europe). We would like to thank Luca & Amalia for the lovely place they "have made" and to congratulate them for their work.

The apartment is beautiful, very comfortable and we enjoyed many evenings on the terrace. Amalia was a wonderful host - she greeted us, showed us around the apartment and had many recommendations for things to do and see. We're light packers and having the laundry in the apartment was wonderful for us. There's also a full kitchen, but there were so many tasty and affordable restaurants in town we never cooked. The town of Modica is beautiful and the apartment has a view over it all. It's also located an easy drive to many sites in Sicily. Our week here was enjoyable and restful. Would definitely recommend.

In early November my husband and I along with another couple stayed at anime a Sud for a wonderful week.
Modica is a fascinating place to visit and the anime a Sud was a delightful home for us. Everything we needed was available and plenty of room for the four of us. The views from the rooftop terrace are lovely. We found plenty to do in Modica: wonderful churches to visit, along with many interesting shops and several good restaurants. We only used our auto for day trips to some of the other wonderful baroque cities nearby, but while we were in Modica we could get around easily on foot which gave us an opportunity to experience living in this ancient hill town. We enjoyed our visit and would recommend both the city and especially the splendid anime a Sud. If you want to experience the charm, the history, the beauty of Sicily, you will find anime a Sud a wonderful home away.

A presto, speriamo!

Anime a Sud was everything on the website and more. Luca met us at the airport in Rome which was fabulous. We spent 10 days in Modica and still weren't ready to leave. We arrived in Modica, it was my first day driving in Europe, and the roads were "fun". Amalia met us and led us to the house. Our welcome was unexpected, gorgeous bowl of fruit, chocolates, local pastries and wine, as well as the basics to save us going out on the first day. We loved the house and ran around oohing and ahhing at the views, the artworks and the fabulous terrace. The evening with the turning on of the golden lights of the city never ceased to amaze us, we were entranced. Coming home after being out for the day was always the best part of the day. The kitchen was well set up and we enjoyed preparing our own meals. The house is a little distance from the parking and carting heavy luggage is not advisable! Walking down town entails a number of steps, so probably not suitable for anyone who is not fully mobile. I would love to go back and spend a month. Luca has put a lot of thought into this place and it's an absolute joy. There are so many interesting sites in this area and we didn't do justice to half of them, so a return visit is on the cards. I endorse the comments of the other more eloquent reviews!

We knew that we wanted to get away from it all and explore the South
Eastern side of Sicily, and we were looking for a special place to stay. We
definitely found it in Anime a Sud. The owner, and artist, Luca Giannini has
done a beautiful restoration of the property which sits on the hillside and
has incredible views of the famous Baroque Church of San Giorgio. Each
evening we sat outside on the terrace enjoying the view of San Giorgio and
      the city below.

The apartment feels like a deluxe boutique hotel, but with all the comforts
of home. The furnishings and bedding are comfortable and well chosen.
The kitchen is well outfitted for cooking just about anything, and you have
access to wi-fi and a printer (which proved helpful to us during our stay).

Upon arrival you are met by Amalia who will show you where to park and
then take you to Anime and walk you through everything you need to know
about the apartment and the area. Amalia really made our stay special. She
was helpful and professional and ready to answer questions about what to
see and where to go in the surrounding area.

We loved staying in Ragusa which is off the beaten tourist track and full of
Baroque treasures, and a good jumping off point for seeing Siracusa,

Anime a Sud is a splendid apartment, greatly furnished and offering all possible comforts: there’s a well equipped kitchen, air conditioning/heater, two gorgeous bathrooms with shower, a TV set and CD player… there’s even a washing machine and the landlord provides washing powder!!
The place where the house is located, within the oldest and loveliest part of Modica, is really amazing: the view you enjoy from the dining room window literally takes your breath away and it’s one that you will not easily forget.
As you can see from the plan published on their website, the apartment is on two levels - the two bedrooms are one lovelier than the other and everything in the house is brand new, modern and of very good taste. There’s also a terrace where you can sit, relax and enjoy the view over the famous roofs of Modica. Moreover, the welcome you receive from the owner and his assistant is fantastic: they give you plenty of information on things to see and do / places to eat or shop, and are always available for help should you need any.
Modica is the perfect place to start off to a series of great visits: from tiny historical villages like Scicli to romantic beaches which lay only 19 km away (30 mts by car). Roads are in a good state there’s no problem driving around.
We stayed there for a week in September 2009 and have been dreaming of going back since: it’s a place to stay I really recommend and very good value for money too.
