Great ocean view in Montezuma - affordable luxury

Left on 04/19/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Ype was an exceptional host. He will go above and beyond what is required to make sure your stay is safe, comfortable, and meets your expectations. His place is big and well secured, making it the perfect place for travelers and families who prefer a bit more privacy, space, and security. He has 20+ different fruits and vegetables growing on his spacious property, which creates a nice ambiance, especially with a view of the ocean at sunset. The rooms are large and comfortable. Guests have access to the kitchen, and all your basic creature comforts (i.e. hot water, big beds, clean sheets, towels, etc.) are taken care of. You'll need a ride into town, but that's easy enough to get. Ype himself can arrange it for you. Basically, if you want extra comfortable accommodations just outside the noisy nightlife in the center of Montezuma (also close to Santa Teresa), I would recommend Ype's place.

      Perfect stay

Left on 04/12/2013 for a stay in January 2013

My fiancee and I were staying a couple of nights at Ype's wonderful house and we didn't want to leave. Ype is the perfect host. He gave us a warm welcome and makes you feel comfortable. The place is perfectly calm, surrounded by the jungle and a beautiful garden. The wooden rooms are very comfortable and beautifully furnished. Everything is very clean and light. The house is an oasis where you want to spend time. It is preferable to have a car to get to the place but Ype was friendly enough to give us a ride to get down to Montezuma and we took a cab to get back. It wasn't complicated. For us, it was the perfect place to stay and we would love to come back!

Saludos a Ype y a Tania. Muchas gracias!!!

      Beautiful and unique

Left on 01/26/2013 for a stay in January 2013

Jodokus Inn is a beautiful house, designed and built to take full advantage of the gorgeous surroundings. The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped, the dining room is elegant, the wide verandas, furnished with hammocks and comfortable seating, inviting. Clearly the heart of the enterprise is the charming and congenial proprietor, who takes a personal interest in each of his guests and goes far out of his way to see that their needs are met. My husband is an alzheimer's patient and Ype treated him with care and concern and dignity. A warm and delightful few days.

      Home away from home.

Left on 01/19/2013 for a stay in December 2012

My family and I enjoyed a wonderful week at the Jodokus Inn about 10 minutes drive from Montezuma.

We took three of the four available rooms all on the second floor. The rooms are not luxurious but very clean and comfortable. The linens and towels were changed every second day which suited us just fine. Two of the rooms are connected with a shared bath between and the other room had its own private bath. Each room walks out onto the veranda where you have amazing views of the surrounding jungle- and Ype's orchard. When we weren't out hiking, swimming, surfing, snorkling etc. we were lounging about on the veranda-taking pictures, playing cards, reading, or sleeping.

We were able to cook most of our meals at the Inn. There is a well equipped kitchen that is shared with the host Ypes. Better yet Ypes is a trained chef and was more than willing to provide helpful information on how to cook things. He was also very generous in sharing the odd missing ingredient. The Inn is situated in the middle of his orchard. Ypes encouraged us to help ourselves to the many in season fruits. We started everyday with grapefruit picked moments before eating.

Aside from clean comfortable rooms, a great kitchen and great views there is a small pool that you can use. After a hike on one of the near-by trails a refreshing dip in the pool is a must.

I can't say enough about the great service we received. Ypes is a very kind and generous man. He went out of his way to be helpful. He genuinely cares about the comfort of his guests and will do what he can to see that you are comfortable. Tonya, Ypes' girlfriend is equally as generous. She took time out to take us surfing, lent her boards and spent time teaching us ( and she is an amazing surfer!)

Jodukus Inn is about 10 minutes from Montezuma by car or aTV. The road is tricky- you need an aTV or 4 wheel drive.

You must like dogs if you stay here as Ypes has 7. We like dogs.

      Best- Ypes generosity

A relaxing guesthouse in the jungle

Left on 01/18/2013 for a stay in December 2012

We began our Costa Rican honeymoon with a trip to Montezuma and stayed at Jodukus Inn for 6 nights. This place is a hidden gem. The grounds are beautiful and full of cool plants, fruit trees and wildlife. The accommodations are really nice, clean and safe. The owner, Ype, is very friendly and he did everything to make sure we enjoyed our trip. Jodokus Inn is about 3km outside of Montezuma, which is perfect to access the small town but get away from it to relax at the end of the day. We were backpacking and didn't have a car so Ype would drive us into town on his quads, which was very convenient and also provided an adventure riding on the rough Costa Rican roads. Jodokus Inn provides access to a fully equipped kitchen, a natural springs pool (ask Ype to do a back-flip) and a beautiful large yard overlooking the ocean. We will definitely be staying here next time we are in Costa Rica.

Beautiful house and property, pleasant stay

Left on 12/23/2012 for a stay in December 2012

My partner and I very much enjoyed our stay.
      Pros:
House and property clean and beautiful
Ype very friendly and helpful in every way
Big kitchen with everything you need
      adorable dogs everywhere
      Rustic backyard pool very refreshing

      Cons:
Located up a steep hill from town. Without own car, transportation options to/from town are $8 taxi or a kinda fun but not exactly comfortable ride on the back or front of Ype's aTV (both about 8-10 minutes).
Ype and partner, as well as two employees, live downstairs near the kitchen and living room, which sometimes made us feel more like visitors to their house than paying guests at an inn.

Jodokus Inn is a gem within the jungle found in a private environment but close to all the local attractions! Located in the area known as Delicias this guesthouse will help make you feel comfortable and relaxed during your vacation. The grounds are immaculately landscaped, boasting amazing ocean views and are secure behind a gated entrance. There is a refreshing natural pool for swimming. The owner, Ype Bolman is an informative, helpful and genuinely kind individual whose mission is to provide the guest with an enjoyable experience to remember. I would recommend this location to family, friends and people who are interested in exploring the finer things in life!

      Amazing long weekend retreat

Left on 02/21/2012 for a stay in February 2012

If there existed a "Hidden Gem" list for Montezuma vacation rentals, Ype's inn would have to be first on the list, or at least in the top three. First of all, the house and the property itself is gorgeous. It sits on a grassy hilltop with spectacular views of the ocean. Ype has had the property since 2000 and it's clear he has put a lot of work into it (ask to his original photos. He has built his own natural spring pool in the back, there are grapefruit and orange trees, and he has landscaped the grounds as well as a high-end hotel. My wife and I couldn't have been happier about the place and the attention he gave us. He was very informative about things to do in Montezuma and he let us bring our 2 little dogs which meant a great deal to us. I could go and on. Do not think twice about this place. The only downside I can think of is that it's a short drive up the hill past the town center. We rented a car so it was fine. Expect monkeys in the late afternoon to frolick in the trees and bats flying around at night eating up all the insects. It's a true "Blue-Zone" experience.

Our stay at the Jodokus was wonderful!!

Left on 01/11/2012 for a stay in December 2011

My family enjoyed our one-week stay very much. The Innkeeper, Ype, was very kind and helpful, getting us oriented to the area and even giving us rides to either the beach or to hiking spots. The fully equipped kitchen was great and we enjoyed cooking together in the evenings.
The location was gorgeous - there was a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean from which we enjoyed each morning while sipping coffee and planning the day. The gardens and fruit trees were also lovely, too. I most enjoyed the open feel of the large house, with large sliding windows and doors everywhere (and monkeys and birds to be seen and heard) Truly a vacation away from it all.

      Would definitely book again.

Left on 12/30/2011 for a stay in December 2011

We booked the two doubles with the shared bath for ourselves and our adult son. For 3 people the rooms are spacious and would work well for a couple with two kids. Rooms are cool for sleeping in December without air-conditioning. The grounds and view are terrific! Don't miss the pool that is fed by a river. The deck is one of the best features, with shade on one of its three sides all day. Monkeys came to eat in one of the trees off the deck everyday. The shared kitchen is commercial quality and works well. Owner is very helpful and always available. Being somewhat out of town isn't a big problem because owner drove us down hill everyday to within easy walking distance and we took a cab back. The owner has quite a few friendly dogs who we were sorry to say good-bye to. The dogs are stictly outside the house.

Traveling to the Inn - Jodokus inn Guesthouse is the perfect place to experience Montezuma. When you arrive at the bus station, Ype will arrange a driver to bring you to the inn. The drive to the property is scenic but a bit scary at first if you've never driven over narrow bridges and climbed vertical hills. Upon arrival, you really get a feel of how big the property is.

Check In - The car will drive you the front of the property where you are greeted by Ype and his wonderful dogs. Now, if your not a dog person, just say so, and he'll put them away, but we loved them. Ype gave us a tour and brought us to our room.

Accommodations - The rooms have their own private patios and are very private. We didn't have a TV, but we had a laptop and there is free wireless. The rooms are very clean, but since your in the middle of the jungle, be prepared to see some lizards and bugs if you don't close your windows. Ype gives you all the tips you need to fend them off. But as he says "They didn't ask for me to come so I must live with them."

Entertainment - Ype went out of his way to be accommodating. He taught my girlfriend and I how to ride the atvs and we drove around Montezuma taking in the sights. He drove us to the waterfalls and even helped us out when we got lost walking back...lol. Basically, whatever we needed, he took care of and frankly he didn't have to. You can arrange a cab to pick you up at night and bring you to the bar, or you can take a aTV ride with Ype and his staff. The food is great in town and the driver works till midnight.

Overall - I would suggest the Jodokus Inn to my friends and family. Ype provides excellent service at a great value. The views and property are amazing. Free food off trees, friendly dogs, Atvs, and a ten minute walk to amazing waterfalls.

With stayed at the Jodokus inn Guesthouse this summer. Ype has an amazing property. My kids loved swimming in his natural jungle pool, running around his expansive property and bringing home jungle treasures (mangoes, coconuts, star fruit etc), relaxing, talking at the communal dinner table, watching TV in his comfortable living room, and playing with Ype and his dogs. We couldn't stay too long, much to my chagrin - my dog allergy wouldn't allow it. However the kids begged me to return just for visits - and I did (much to the delight of my children). And although I wasn't a guest Ype was wonderful to welcome us back. We stayed in Costa Rica for 2 months. During that period Ype offered what we sought - the comfort and warmth of connecting with others in his jungle oasis.

Spectatular Scenery in a Quiet and Private Setting

Left on 06/28/2011 for a stay in June 2011

Jodokus was a perfect setting for a quiet get-a-way to enjoy all that this Costa Rica coast town has to offer. It is up a steep hill from the central part of town, but it is a beautiful walk during the day. Ype was a great host and offered rides during the day, but if you plan to be out late you would have to taxi or quad it back. I wouldn't recommend it you prefer to stay out late most evenings and want to enjoy the party scene. The grounds around the inn are beautifully landscaped and enjoyable to walk around with all the lush vegetation. I loved watching all the wildlife and the sunsets/sunrises/rainstorms were amazing. My room was clean with a comfortable bed. You have access to use the kitchen during the day as well as coffee is offered every morning. If staying here, you have to be an animal lover as there are several dogs on the property and a couple cats. Overall, if you want a quiet family type atmosphere at a reasonable cost, I would highly recommend staying here.

My wife and I were on our honeymoon and tried very hard to find something in Montezuma for New Years' Eve. Fortunately for us, everything in town was booked. We found Jodokus on Trip adviser and found it to be remarkably accessible despite being way off the beaten path.

The grounds were amazing, easily the best thing about this up-and-coming guesthouse. 2 football fields of perfectly manicured lawn and gardens with some jungle walking paths. Though the house and property are still under construction, it was a very pleasant environment.

Ype Bolman, the quadri-linguist owner and manager was so great. Very hospitable and accommodating of our long and delayed journey from Mt. Arenal, he accepts paypal transactions which made booking the room very easy.

The views are spectacular, the rooms are inexpensive, the service is great. The rooms themselves are a little small and the showers are electrically heated and there is no central a/C. Not exactly luxurious but comfortable and very fun. Oh yeah, there are dogs. If you don't like dogs, you won't like Jodukus Inn. Ype has half-a-dozen or more rescues patrolling the property.

If you catch a taxi, just ask for Casa de Ype. The drivers know where it is, and soon a lot more people will too. Great little place; we're very glad we found it.

We could not have been more pleased with the Jodokus Inn. The owner and host Ype could not have been more helpful or accomandating. Our rooms were comfortable and clean. The view from the balcony was beautiful. At night you could clearly see not only montezuma which is just down the hill but also the lights of San Jose. Ype and his worker Vincente escorted my family of five to the top Montezuma waterfalls on trails that began at the Inn. The grounds of the Inn are beautifully landscaped. My family family and I were able to relax and recharge. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Left on 11/24/2010 for a stay in November 2010

I think of Mr. Ype Bolman's place as real home away from home not a hotel. Only thing difference is you get a beautiful garden and rush forest and you are right there to enjoy it.
I've got very friendly service from Ype and I must say he was a great chief, he made nice fish with vegetable, salad and Dutch apple pie. Room was very clean and comfortable with wifi. It's little far from town but if you have a car or enjoy hiking, this is for you. Middle of town is very noisy and I loved quietness this place offered. It's not fancy place but charming and homely.
I recommend this place to families and groups but I was alone and Ype entertained me and helped me around. So it's for all. :))

      a magical experience

Jodokus inn guesthouse is truly a hidden gem in the tropics. A beautiful house set amidst exotic tropical gardens and nature trails with far reaching and stunning sea views of the bay of Tambor. The owner and host Ype Bolman made my stay a truly enjoyable and most memorable experience with his warmth, splendid sense of humour, exquisite home cooking and his wealth of local knowledge. I felt as if i was in paradise, such a relaxing and enjoyable experience all round. I am already planning my return visit and will be sure to recommend this place to my friends and family.

      Beautiful Property and amazing Host!

My friends and I stayed here when a reservation we had made in town turned out to be an overbooking, and I'm really glad that we did! This guesthouse is located in the hills above Montezuma, which is good if you want to get away from the noise of town but a minor inconvenience if you don't have a car (your options are to walk or take a taxi). The owner, Ype, is the most memorable person I met in Costa Rica. He built Jodokus up from nothing into the great place it is today, and could not be more proud of it. He's always glad to entertain you with conversation or feed you fruit from the myriad of trees in the front yard. I particularly enjoyed walking through the jungle to get to town, a route accessible via the many steps built into the hill around the house. If you're looking for a quiet, beautiful place to stay in Montezuma, Jodokus won't let you down!

Tip: The balcony is a great place to watch the sun rise over the water!

One thing to note: Ype has quite a few dogs whom he has rescued from town. They are very friendly and I loved them, but if dogs aren't your thing you might want to check with Ype and see if the dogs are still typically in the house when guests are present.
