Description from the owner

This spectacular almond-wood house is nestled in the forest for a tranquil, natural ambiance. You will see lots of wildlife and hear only nature sounds: waves, monkeys, birds, and the burbling brook near the house.

A mere 300 meters/yards from beautiful Los Cedros Beach, this house has the additional charm of having easy walking access to two lovely rivers that offer a wonderful place to spend the day relaxing and watching tropical birds.

Even if you never leave the house you will see plenty of wildlife, which could include: monkeys, agoutis, coatimundis, tayras, toucans, armadillos, anteaters, and many other species. The third...Read more

Wildlife central! Best jungle house ever!

Left on 02/06/2013 for a stay in February 2013

The moment we arrived, the owners Donna and Tito, welcomed us in to their secret spot within minutes making check in super easy. They made us feel right at home and gave us so much useful information. The house is just perfect. It has everything you need and even has a huge dog kennel/cage if you do not want to take him to town with you. The house is comfortable and looks like a jungle house with some "Swiss Family Robinson" touches! I wish we had started our trip here instead of only staying for our last 2 nights because we did not want to leave so soon. I will definitely recommend this place to our clients who travel with us since we are San Jose based tour guides and cannot wait to go back! Donna is so sweet and Tito even told us where to go and grab some fresh fish from the local fisherman to cook in the huge kitchen and even had a small BBQ! All of the rooms and bathrooms were nice and very clean and the decks have books, playing cards, dominoes, etc. to keep you busy with your family when relaxing. Beach and bath towels were provided which was super nice and free WiFi. The grounds are so well manicured and plants, trees, and flowers all over making it a perfect spot for pretty butterflies, agoutis, Capuchin and Howler monkeys, coatis, birds and geckoes to come and hang out with us :) I also liked the security we felt leaving the house unlocked and didn't even use the safe while we were out exploring the surrounding beaches because Donna and Tito were always on site. It really made us feel at ease and just all around they are great people to talk to. We felt like we knew them and were very sad to leave. Only thing that keeps me smiling is that I know where to keep going to from now on when I visit Montezuma again!!! Thanks for everything, Tito and Donna. P/S: Azim sends Pi a kiss!

We are always very happy to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay. This reviewer touched on some of our strong points: unique and comfortable house, abundant wildlife, and the very safe and secure environment- in a natural setting.

We live next door to the rental house, so we are available and happy to help with anything that may come up. At the same time, we ensure the complete privacy of our guests.

This house is surrounded on three sides by undeveloped land, so our guests enjoy a sense of being very close to nature, with no noise from close neighbors or road traffic.

Perfect relaxation, privacy, and a stress-free stay: this is the setting we strive to provide for our guests.

Architecturally unique house in an idyllic setting… It surpassed

Left on 12/24/2012 for a stay in November 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Casa Montezuma for 9 days during our recent vacation in CR and absolutely loved it! We had high expectations based on the description, pictures and consistently great reviews we saw on Tripadvisor, but it ended up being even better than we had imagined. Nestled in the forest and surrounded by colorful, lush vegetation, this unique three-level vacation house was designed to integrate the comforts of indoor living with the splendor of the outdoor surroundings.

The first floor has a large, fully-equipped kitchen, a bathroom, 2 showers (one large, warm-water indoor shower with vanity & one outdoors) and a large patio that looks out onto the well-manicured but lush and colorful yard. The second floor has 3 fair-sized bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a large deck, and the third floor has a small, covered observatory where you can watch and photograph wildlife in the surrounding trees. The unique aspect of this house, is that all of the rooms are connected by open-air hallways, stairways and decks/patios so that when you walk out through the bedroom door in the morning, you step straight outdoors with the forest in front of you. Also unique…. the 3 small bathrooms each has its sink stationed outside, so you open the screen window and lean outside to wash your hands. Getting our coffee and breakfast in the morning involved winding our way down to the modern, fully-equipped kitchen via outside hallways, stairwells, deck and patio. We would then sit out on the lower patio with our coffee and breakfast surrounded by lush, flowering vegetation, watching the coatis, agoutis, hummingbirds and other wildlife that frequently wandered by and listening to the sounds of exotic birds and the roar of nearby howler monkeys echoing through the forest. An idyllic start to each day!! Later, after a full day of activities in the Montezuma area, we would return and spend the evenings out on the 2nd-floor deck, drinking wine, chatting or reading and listening to the sounds of the forest wildlife, the babbling of the nearby brook and the distant roar of the ocean surf. This house brings you about as close as you can get to living in the forest while still offering all the comfort and conveniences of a regular vacation home. Despite being so exposed to the outdoors, it is still very private since it is almost completely surrounded by forest and vegetation.

Casa Montezuma is managed by Donna and Tito, who live next door. They are both wonderful people who are never intrusive, but always available to answer questions and provide any needed assistance. Donna was extremely helpful with our travel plans in advance of our trip… answering questions, offering suggestions and even booking our taxi from the airport to the Puntarenas ferry. When we arrived at Casa Montezuma, Donna provided us with info on the house and property as well as a full orientation to the area including bus schedules, taxi info, ideas for places to eat, tips on where to get groceries and more. She also loaned us a local cell phone to use while in the area. Donna and Tito really helped make this vacation one of the best we’ve had!

As with everyone else who has reviewed Casa Montezuma to date, I’m giving the property 5 stars. However, I truly feel that it deserves 10 stars for being such a magical place that truly surpassed our expectations.

Wow - Beautiful place, great and gracious owners!

Left on 11/18/2012 for a stay in October 2012

We began our trip to Costa Rica October 1, 2012. Our base was in alajuela. We had the pleasure of meeting Tito there. After his return trip from Puerto Rico, we had the chance to stay at his place towards the end of our trip. Donna, his wife is an absolute sweetheart! My husband and I felt like we had known both of them for years!!! Montezuma is absolutely beautiful but Tito and Donna's place is amazing. They have made it a top notch place to stay! The grounds are so lush, quiet, private and yet only minutes from the beach and town! It was very hard for us to go back to alajuela after spending 2 days at their place. When we left we were so relaxed and all we can say is their place was a slice of heaven on earth and doesn't get much better than that! Bill and I wish Tito and Donna the best of luck and pura vida! Hope to see you again!!

      Ich komme wieder!

Left on 10/09/2012 for a stay in March 2012

Will man keine Ruhe, fährt man einfach nach Montezuma (ca.3km).

Best wishes to Donna & Tito, Pie & Chuleta

      Best teenager/family vacation Ever

Left on 09/08/2012 for a stay in June 2012

We spent a month here in June with our 3 teenagers and I think it was the perfect teenager vacation. The house was wonderful, beautiful and big enough that we were not living on top of each other and we had everything we needed. It is close enough to the beach & town that the kids could be independent but we still had great family time together. Donna was wonderful and a lifesaver more than once. She was always there when we needed her but never intrusive. The internet always worked from all over the house. The house was very safe, we never worried about our selves or our belongings. The wildlife was incredible - we saw more from the porch than we did anywhere else in costa rica.

Our group arrived by two separate methods on 4/12, and as soon as we entered the gate we knew this was the right place to stay. The grounds are well manicured without taking away the natural feeling of the jungle around. The property is very welcoming and you instantly feel like you're at home. The home is beautifully constructed with ample space for six with a great layout. Despite no a/C the rooms remained cool and comfortable for sleeping, and visitors of the insect type were surprisingly minimal. The walk from the home to the beach is a non issue and just created new opportunities for seeing wildlife and experiencing the area. I'd suggest visiting the beach at low tide to scope out where the rocks are and to see where the good sand clearings are, once you figure out where to swim it's wonderful and exceptionally beautiful. We consistently used the bus to and from town and taxis are easily available after the bus stops running. Montezuma town center has a positive vibe and a charm that I haven't experienced anywhere else, plenty of shops, access to tours and places to eat as well as two supermarkets and the occasional farmers market make it easy to prepare meals at the house. The provided bikes were very handy for our fish buying excursion and exploring in general. The owners were extremely helpful from first contact about the property to arranging our taxi back the the airport. They are never intrusive but always available. I feel fortunate that we were able to spend our vacation in such a beautiful home, but the icing on the cake was the wonderful service and care shown by it's owners. I have already recommended it as a vacation destination to friends and family, and hope to return as soon as possible.

      Fabulous Jungle/Beach Experience

Left on 04/08/2012 for a stay in January 2012

We spent four weeks beginning mid-January 2012 in Casa Montezuma. Donna and Tito were excellent hosts; helpful in getting us to their location, generous in sharing their knowledge of the area wildlife and in accessing resources needed to make our stay memorable.
The house is fabulous; well designed, constructed mainly of lovely wood and well maintained. The kitchen is fully stocked with appliances and cooking utensils. The property is located far enough from the beach and main road to be peaceful and completely private yet close enough to make the five minute walk to the magnificent beach or to the bus stop for travel to the nearby towns of Montezuma or Cabuya easy (10 minute $1.50 ride). It is also beautifully landscaped with tropical vegetation and abutting natural jungle affords plenty of amazing bird and animal viewing from your doorstep.
We highly recommend this lovely property for a wonderful tropical experience/ vacation amid lush grounds and bountiful jungle. Casa Montezuma has the peacefulness of a rural setting with easy access to shops, restaurants and markets of the nearby towns. And the ocean. So fun.

We saw more wildlife (howlers and white-faced monkeys, agouti, coatimundi, iguana) here than all the other locations we visited in Costa Rica together (6)! It's also a birder's paradise! Anyone wanting more of a nature experience will love this house. It's well-equipped and an architectural oddity making the stay even more interesting. The owners, Donna and Tito, are wonderful hosts. They know the area well, from secret beaches to buying fresh fish! The location is great-just a short walk across the road to the ocean and just 3 km outside of town. We had a wonderful, unforgettable experience in Montezuma!

Stunning house in a stunning setting.

Left on 01/22/2012 for a stay in January 2012

This house is simply spectacular. I spent a month in the Montezuma area with various traveling companions-both family and friends-and researched different housing possibilities extensively before I left. After getting to know the area and staying in three different places during my stay, this is the house I would come back to again and again. The architecture is stunning, both aesthetically and functionally. It has the perfect mix of indoors and outdoors, private space and communal space, and high and low sites for watching animals. It has a huge, well-stocked kitchen, where five of us regularly (and comfortably) cooked elaborate dinners. And the dark hardwood floors gleam.

Donna and Tito are similarly amazing. One of my friends remarked that they were like a private concierge service. They booked multiple shuttles for us, had lots of handy tips about Montezuma and Cabuya, and fixed anything we managed to mess up almost instantaneously. And they manage to do all this while giving their guests near complete privacy. The house is surrounded by jungle on three-and-a-half sides, so while Donna and Tito are right near by, the house feels nicely secluded.

And the location cannot be beat if your group is active or is renting a car. We immensely enjoyed our walks both to Cabuya and Montezuma (although we'd often get picked up by cars along the way), which are both about two miles away along a (usually) shady road. Playa Cedros is less than five minutes away-from the time you are grabbing your towel to the time you are laying on the beach-and there are rivers we loved swimming in twenty minutes down the road in either direction. We rented a car for part of out trip, but honestly preferred to be without one. Taxis from Montezuma to the gate were consistently $10 or less.

Choosing this house was definitely the best decision I made in my Costa Rica planning. Thank you Donna and Tito!

      Magical Casa Montezuma

Left on 12/10/2011 for a stay in November 2011

This two-storey home is magical - it starts with morning coffee on the lower or upper patio, watching the rising sun shaft through the trees and play on the riot of multi-colored foliage of shrubs and flowers; o serving the parade of wild-life; coatamundis, agoutis, raccoons, humming birds, doves, parrots, trogons and a host of other birds; walking to the almost deserted surf and fishing beaches barely 5 minutes away; and gazing at the tropical night sky, glittering with stars never have elsewhere, because there is no streetlight pollution to interfere with this stunning view of the universe. Then drifting off to sleep with the soothing noise of the nearby stream in the background.

Every window provides a view of tropical plant life; the forest backs right on to the garden, showing howler and whiteface monkeys going about their business in the branches. The second floor bedrooms, all equipped with fans, are cool and comfortable and look out over luxuriant foliage and coconut palms where birds, red squirrels, monkeys and coatamundis climb and feed.
Every window and door is screened and designed with maximum ventilation in mind. The ocean breezes cool the house night and day and surprisingly there were hardly any bugs!

The house is halfway between Montezuma, a small tourist center, and Cabuya, a sleepy fishing village, both with good restaurants and places to purchase freshly caught fish. Both villages are in easy walking distance (about 1.5 miles), with interesting scenery on the way. Donna and Tito, the owners and hosts, provide bicycles and are very generous with their time and copious information about the area. The kitchen is very well-appointed and although Donna and Tito live only a short distance away, the visitor has completely privacy and peace in this tranquil and interesting haven.

      I give it a 10!
