Fabulous secluded house, fun hosts, and a killer view

Left on 03/23/2013 for a stay in March 2013

My wife and I spent three wonderful days here while traveling through southern Costa Rica. What we loved most was the house's open-air design and its mountainside seclusion. The home was built to capitalize on a stunning ocean view, which you get from the kitchen, outdoor patio, upstairs balconies, and the master bedroom. Michele, the owner, pointed out that she could have added Pacific sunsets to the view but preferred to preserve the towering trees that block the western horizon. Good choice. That kind of preservation-minded development is exactly what we need more of -- especially in paradise destinations like Uvita.
With three bedrooms, Casa Uvita was definitely more casa than the two of us needed. But for the price it was great to have such a spacious place to ourselves. The house is brand new, comfortable, and thoughtfully decorated. Michele was an energetic and hands-on host, helping us line up stand-up paddle boarding lessons and making fantastic recommendations on beaches to visit and restaurants to check out. She even agreed to pick up fresh-caught red snapper for us while running errands in nearby Dominical then cooked us a wonderful meal. In exchange she only asked that we provide the head of the fish and any leftover fillets to the men at work on her second house next door. No problem.
One of the men, Carlos, is the full-time groundskeeper, handyman, and chef at Casa Uvita. By the time the howler monkeys got around to waking us up each morning, Carlos would already be tip-toeing through the kitchen preparing us strong coffee, platters of fresh fruit, omelets or his signature arepas. I can also vouch for his piña coladas -- killer. Ask Carlos to lead you up the mountain to the waterfall and have a crisp morning swim. Now that's pura vida.
Thanks again for a wonderful stay!

Beautiful House in a Nature Lover's Paradise

Left on 03/17/2013 for a stay in February 2013

As the previous reviewers described, Casa Uvita is an awesome and very safe place to stay for kids. It's a beautiful house located in the jungle just a minutes from waterfalls and gorgeous kid-friendly beaches. Besides a few pigmy kingfishers, cranes, herons, iguanas, and crabs, you will have the beach to yourself. I can go on and on about how Casa Uvita is the perfect getaway but the previous reviewers do a great job doing that already.

The most unexpected and most cherished part of our stay at Casa Uvita was getting to know the owner Michele and her housekeeper Carlos. Michele made sure our stay was perfect. She knows all the guides in town, so whether you want to fish, kayak, surf, bird watch or visit a coffee plantation, she will connect with the friendliest locals in Costa Rica. Carlos instantly became a favorite of our kids (two boys, ages 4 and 10). He treated us with the tastiest huevos rancheros in the morning and pina coladas at night. He was eager to search the yard for bugs and frogs with my 10 yr old who felt like he was staying "in a page out of a National Geographic magazine".

What impressed me most about Michele was her dedication to keep the landscape of Costa Rica pristine. Casa Uvita is located in the heart of coop dedicated to keeping the primary forest intact. Because of this, the howler monkeys can be heard howling loudly on the mountain where Casa Uvita is nestled; we saw them swinging through the trees on the property on several occasions. The howler monkey population is in serious decline in Costa Rica so it's inspiring to know that Michele is making a tangible, heroic difference to ensure the population stays in Uvita. I am a biologist and I learned more about the critters of the jungle from Michele (who is not a biologist) than from any book or professor in college.

Finally, I think the people of Uvita are just great. There is a genuine feeling of caring, community and responsibility for this beautiful slice of paradise.

      Such a gorgeous home!

Left on 01/16/2013 for a stay in January 2013

We stayed at Casa Uvita with our three grown children. It was by far the most lovely spot in our stay in Costa Rica. The house is drop-dead gorgeous and the views of the ocean and sunsets are spectacular. We loved the open-air concept with the ability to pull the shutters at dusk. We like to cook, and the kitchen was well equipped with several options for seating. My favorite memory is lying in the hammock while watching the sun set. We saw a sloth, toucans and howler monkeys in the nearby trees, a treat. The house is nicely secluded but is a short drive from the beach. Michele was a wonderful host and took us on a birding hike to a beautiful waterfall for swimming. I wish we had been able to stay at Casa Uvita longer. We will highly recommend the house to any friends visiting C.R.

      Beautiful tropical home...away from home

Left on 12/31/2012 for a stay in December 2012

A small group of us (5) decided to head to Costa Rica for a week. We were looking for a location which was away from the crowds that are common to many other places in Costa Rica. Uvita was the perfect location.

When we arrived at the house, we were suprised - it was much more beautiful than the pictures portrayed. The house is completely open to the outside which allows the breeze and sounds of the jungle into the home. Don't worry, while Costa Rica is a buggy place, the bedrooms were basically bug free (there are screens on the windows and the deck of the master bedroom).

We were a bit concerned about not being directly on the beach. However, we realized this was the perfect location as there is a bit of elevation which helps keep the house a bit cooler. Also, being in the jungle offers a true Costa Rican experience. We found that the best way to view nature was to simply sit on the deck with a cup of coffee in the morning - monkeys and birds are all around and put on quite a display. Thus, while many other tourists were treking through some of the crowded national parks to simply catch a glimpse of a monkey, we saw them nearly every morning 30 meters from our deck.

There are a lot of activities close to the house - kayaking, snorkeling at the national park, surfing, paddle boarding, and hiking. We kayaked with Carlos (Michele (owner) can get you the contact details) and also surfed with Gibran (of Bodhi Surf - 506 8522 2278). Both were very knowledgeable and excellent instructors/guides. There is also a hike near the property to a secluded waterfall and pool which makes for an excellent swim in a fantastic, tropical location.

We will be heading back to Casa Playa Uvita...soon.

      Perfect house for perfect Peace

Left on 12/17/2012 for a stay in December 2012

We loved our stay. The house is beautiful, comfortable and quiet. We could hear and see the ocean . The primary forest was at our front door, and we even saw a sloth, howler monkeys, and blue morphis butterflies right in the yard. The house has an open feel, with lots of breezes and light. It was like bringing paradise right inside. We had a delicious breakfast prepared for us each moning of our stay. There are several large porches with comfortable chairs and bird watching is excellent. We would love to stay there again.

Tranquil oasis, with an ocean view

Left on 10/26/2012 for a stay in July 2012

We spent 2 days at Casa Uvita, and I would go back in a heartbeat! The house, the surroundings, and the wonderful people make this a truly unforgettable place.

The property is gorgeous – we felt like we were staying at a at a luxurious eco-camp. We were able to enjoy the privacy and freedom of camping, but in much more lux surroundings (immaculately clean rooms, ocean views from both floors, covered balconies, hammocks, and situated on the edge of a primary rain forest). Casa Uvita is adjacent to a lot of natural beauty, and we were able to spend our days hiking, birding, playing in the pool of waterfall, body surfing at the nearby beach, and of course relaxing.

Breakfast and dinner are provided daily by Carlos, the on-site housekeeper/cook, and he was not only friendly but a fantastic chef.

Casa Uvita truly is a paradise.

Paradise Found - This is as good as it gets!

Left on 08/10/2012 for a stay in July 2012

I spent the most amazing week at Casa Uvita this past July. I am a teacher who has lived and worked in Costa Rica (and led many a field trip there with my science students), and so I was really looking for something unique and special that I had not experienced before. Casa Uvita not only met, but far surpassed my expectations. The house itself was absolutely beautiful, with custom woodwork throughout and granite countertops in the kitchen. What I loved the most, however, was the feeling of being in the middle of the rainforest even when I was inside the house! Its "open" construction with upstairs and downstairs balconies gave it the feel of a majestic tree house -- you could practically reach out and touch the wildlife and birds as they went by. I literally was awakened each morning by nearby howler monkeys, toucans, forest falcons, and mealy parrots who were searching for their breakfast. Each evening I went to sleep to the hypnotic sounds of owls, tinamous, and chicharras (cicadas). I experienced world-class birding every morning (slaty-tailed trogons, violaceous trogans, masked & black-crowned titaras, laughing falcons, collared forest falcons, brown-hooded parrots, white-fronted parrots, red-lored parrots, mealy parrots, parakeets too numerous to count, golden hooded tanagers + many other types of tanager, multiple varieties of flycatcher, euphonias, chestnut-billed toucans (they were everywhere!), fiery-billed aracaris, blue-crowned motmots, pearl kites, manakins, and on and on. I felt like I was living in a national geographic movie! Besides the incredible hiking with outrageous views of the ocean (there also is an ocean view from the house itself), I hiked down to a beautiful waterfall and swam in the waterhole within the forest. Another day I drove to Marino Ballena national park (10 minutes away) and spent an amazing day on its many beaches (the main beach has a great tide for small children -- very safe). On two other days I road-biked along the main road with an ocean view. The house is fairly new, so the accommodations were super clean and comfortable. Carlos the cook/on-site staff person was very kind and helpful, and made wonderful breakfasts and dinners! This was a unforgettable vacation; I certainly will be back for another stay at Casa Uvita next summer. Many thanks to the gracious owners for their incredible knowledge of Costa Rica and its culture, and for sharing tips on fun activities to do while there.

Eco-friendly luxury in a tropical paradise!

Left on 07/28/2012 for a stay in July 2012

Casa Uvita lets you experience the beauty of Costa Rica from the privacy of your own rental home. The house is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest. Enjoy the luxury of a hotel with the ambiance of camping in a rain forest. This eco-friendly home is the perfect place to start your trip to Costa Rica.

We spent the mornings hiking directly from Casa Uvita through the rain forest in its backyard. This is an ideal spot for birders and nature enthusiasts alike. In the afternoons we relaxed on the pristine beaches just minutes from the house. National Park Marino Ballena, or Whale's Tail offers you untouched beaches away from all the tourists.

Michelle has a wealth of information and knowledge about traveling in Costa Rica. Carlos does a fabulous job of maintaining the property and is an amazing cook! Enjoy!

Casa Uvita is one of the best deals in Costa Rica, and the most

Left on 07/14/2012 for a stay in July 2012

Casa Uvita is simply the most beautiful place I've ever stayed in Costa Rica. Accessed by a road from the beach that takes you high up on to a rainforested mountain, the house provides an elegant welcome with floors and ceilings of polished tropical woods, airy, open rooms, stunning tile and granite work, and Latin american art throughout. Giant screened windows bring in soft breezes and give out to spectacular views of the rainforest, animals, and birds on three sides, with a magnificent view of the ocean on the fourth. What's more, you sleep in extremely comfortable beds and enjoy the spacious private bathrooms that also look out in to the forest. The warm Costa Rican service provided by Carlos made our stay very comfortable. I believe that Casa Uvita is one of the best deals in Costa Rica. The quiet and beauty of the place is breathtaking, and it's offered at a bargain price that doesn't match the caliber of the lodging and service provided. You won't be disappointed, other than with the fact that you can't stay there forever.

      The best of Costa Rica

Left on 07/06/2012 for a stay in January 2012

Costa Rica is about wildlife, mountains, the ocean and outdoor activity. Casa Uvita is the perfect location for all this! Nestled on a mountain on the edge of a primary rainforest, it is just minutes away from the beach. We hiked, bird watched, swam in the river, swam in the ocean, ran along the beautiful beaches, and went whale watching! What more could one ask for? The house itself is luxurious: high ceilings, wooden floors, spacious rooms, tasteful furnishings, a well-equiped kitchen. And the terraces are the perfect place to lounge and read or bird-watch. There's one porch downstairs outside the kitchen (perfect for breakfast), and two upstairs, one of which belongs to the master suite (perfect for star gazing and wine in the evenings!) We spent several of our early mornings and our evenings out on the terraces, watching birds - toucans are regular visitors! Overall, our visit to Casa Uvita was a rejuvenating, invigorating get-away!
