Description from owner

Description

Brora is one of the most beautiful villages in the Highlands, this is a delightful Holiday Cottage available for let in the Crofting community of Dalchalm, which is a quiet area 2 miles north of Brora and adjacent to the 12th Tee of Brora Golf Course with easy access to the beach and countryside.

The Paddock has 3 bedrooms (sleeps up to 6 People), large sitting room and large breakfast / dining room. 1 shower room downstairs and 1 bathroom upstairs.

We have another property next door called the Old Croft which sleeps 6 people and can be booked through this site but you need to search The Old Croft, Brora.

Heating surcharges apply in the winter.

Parking outside the house and outside facilities for bicycles and golf clubs.

Dogs and children are welcome.

From Inverness to Brora, follow the signs for the A9 for 60 miles (approx 1hr 20mins driving time). When you arrive in Brora continue driving a further half mile north through the village. You will then see a sign for Dalchalm. Follow the sign cross over the railway line and continue driving to the very last house. This is the Paddock. Castle of Mey

Travel 55 miles north of Brora and located between Thurso and John O'Groats, the castle looks out to sea across the Pentland Firth.

Built as a Z-plan castle between 1566 and 1572 by the fourth Earl of Caithness, it was bought from Captain Imbert-Terry by the Queen Mother in 1952 (after her husband died). The castle was then in a state of disrepair and renovation work was required.

In September 1996 she handed the castle, its 2000 acre estate and her prize-winning herd of Aberdeen Angus over to a charitable trust to make their future secure.

The gardens were one of her favourite places and it is said that she often used to head straight Dunrobin Castle

Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland.

The Castle, which resembles a French chateâu with its towering conical spires, has seen the architectural influences of Sir Charles Barry, who designed London’s Houses of Parliament, and Scotland’s own Sir Robert Lorimer. The Castle was used as a naval hospital during the First World War and as a boys’ boarding school from 1965 to 1972.

Dunrobin Castle is on the east coast which lies south of Brora, overlooking the Moray Firth, just north of the villages of Golspie and of Dornoch (famous for its cathedral and Royal Dornoch Golf Club).

Dunrobin Castle is open annually from 1st April to 15th October.

Other Activities: Shooting during the season,

Golf: The Course

Gleneagles may be more glamorous, Carnoustie more prestigious. It is Brora which is the most northerly golf memorial to James Braid in his native Scotland.

Brora is also the headquarters of the James Braid Golfing Society, and while its President, Peter Thomson, and fellow member Ronan Rafferty annually enthuse, the club golfer, the bedrock of the game, will derive equal pleasure and satisfaction from Brora's 6110 yards.

Given 194 acres of Scottish links land to work on, what in 1923 was entitled 'Braid's Plan' is hardly altered. Here the visitor will enjoy the mixture of bent grass and beach sand, burn water and gorse in glorious yellow May bloom. There is even a railway which comes into play from the tenth tee.

With the exception of the short sixth, the outward nine holes follow the contour of Kintradwell Bay in the foreground, with a backdrop of the Sutherland foothills from Ben Bhraggie to the west, away to the Ord of Caithness in the north-east.

The inward nine holes follow the fence line of the bordering croft land, with out of bounds to concentrate the mind. Of the two short holes, the delightful 13th, Snake, winds back towards the sea, whilst the 18th contains all the concerns of protecting a score against a bunkered green a two hundred yard carry away and under the scrutiny of the clubhouse windows.

Other options are available and we are happy to tailor packages to meet you requirements.

Reviewed 24 Aug 2018

This was the best relaxing holiday we have had in a long time The cottage was perfect for all the family and the dogs The rooms were big so we did not invade other peoples space There were 5 adults myself, wife daughter, son, and 2 grand kids, 4 dogs, (3 chihuahua 's and a border collie so there was plenty walks around the area for them and the beach. The garden was really big but not escape proof for the chihuahua's but it wasn't a big issue as they got used to the garden The owners of the property were very nice and friendly, we would love to visit again
