“A hidden gem in the Durham Dales”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2022

The feeling you get when you walk into this nobeautiful cottage is like sinking into a huge bubble bath with Lindors and a glass of prosecco. Everything about it is just a joy and pure luxury and you just immediately unwind.... We walked along the river wear left out of cottage... (go across bridge just up the Rd to the wear dale museum)then right onto the wear dale way... to the waterfall, then onto Westgate and up to slitt woods where we swam under the waterfalls... There's a 4mile circular route up the valley and back down the road, to the fantastic hare and hounds pub with amazing food... There's an art exhibition at the Bowes museum in Barnard Castle which on its on is just a stunning place to walk up the tees... You must visit high and low force... Carry on down hill past main car park for 1.5 miles and on the right are 2 laybys where you can park all day for free walk over the stye down through gate to low force... It will take your breathe away, we stayed till sunset and got th e most incredible photos... Walk upstream 1.5 miles to high force left half way up at the bridge takes you to the top to look down right over the bridge takes you to the foot of the waterfall... We followed the pennine way from low force so left across the first swinging blue bridge towards Middleton on tees its much quieter and the smaller waterfalls all the way down are just as incredible and scenery spectacular... We didn't want to leave... Will definetly return to Mayfield Cottage again...The owners have worked hard and made the perfect holiday retreat and I thank them very much for such a wonderful holiday!

“This cottage is very comfortable and well equipped.”

Reviewed 12 Jun 2019

We enjoyed our stay at Mayfield Cottage. It was spotlessly clean and well equipped. We loved watching the sheep and lambs grazing right up under the window in the dining room. The kitchen was lovely and very well equipped. There are several guide books and maps available in the book shelf and a binder with information on things to do and where to eat. The only problem we had was that there were no instructions available on how to run the cottage, heating, garbage, etc. That would have helped but we muddled through and had a great time. I would recommend this property to friends.

The cottage was extremely cosy and very clean. All facilities had been taken care off particularly in the kitchen and lounge to make our stay very much home from home.

Response from the owner Thank you so much for your review and apologies re the ref to Cowshill but unfortunately currently this is the closest village Trip Advisor recognises near Ireshopeburn. The location map is correct so hopefully did not cause too much confusion. Really pleased you enjoyed your stay and look forward to hopefully hosting you again.
