“A wonderful time with all if iur siblings in a beautiful setting” Our family was looking for a get-away for a long weekend, to spend together and enjoy each others company. We've list a brother and sister and wanted to just celebrate our family. The Roost was a perfect setting for that. We walked, played games around the dining room table, cookedesla together and listened to music all weekend. It was our "Big Chill" weekend. It was just what we had hoped for. Lots of room for all. Very comfortable furnishings all around. Beautifully decorated.

“Great cabin for families!” Thank you Ben and amanda for letting us rent your lovely cabin for the weekend! We loved the open floor plan, it worked out well and it was easy to keep track of our little ones. We also loved that the cabin is well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, baby equipment, everything we needed and so much more! We didn't need to bring anything "extra" along which is such a big plus when you travel with small children! Another real plus is the location, it is so close to great parks, lakes, rivers, etc. We didn't know what to do first. We will definitely visit again, hopefully soon.

Strawberry log cabin

“The perfect place to rest and renew...” We spent four days at this beautiful cabin with its breathtaking view of the Stanislaus River. We had coffee in the morning and watched the river cascade down the canyon. We had lunch on the deck and watched the river...The river lolled us to sleep at night. The accomodations were wonderful, comfortable, well-maintained. We were joined by our daughter and her family for two nights and the loft suited their needs. We have already made plans to return again.

“Our stay here was wonderful!” Our stay here was wonderful! The cabin is perfectly located, walking distance from the lake. The kitchen is well stocked and the cabin feels very cozy. The owners kept in touch throughout, even responded to our silly questions within minutes! The only down-side was that the second bathroom was difficult to get to, since in order to get to the basement you have to go outside (not something you want to do on a winter evening), and one of the bedrooms only had access through another bedroom (compromising privacy). There was more than ample space (huge living room) and plenty of bedrooms. We will definitely be coming back!

About Dorrington

A historic gold rush-era town in California's interior, Dorrington was made famous by Mark Twain's 1865 musings on the "Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Nestled at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains, Dorrington is a fascinating mixture of American history and striking natural scenery. A quiet respite from the hubbub of urban life, Dorrington is perfectly preserved as it was during the height of the gold rush and offers a wealth of exciting activities all year round.

Some of the most popular attractions and activities for visitors to Calaveras County include:

  • Panning for gold: Visitors can learn the art and science of panning for gold; and you never know, the silent earth may not yet have yielded all its treasures.
  • Vineyard tours: Calaveras County is home to some of California's most revered wineries. Take a vineyard tour or visit tasting rooms for a sample of the local product. There are also many microbreweries and pubs to enjoy in the area.
  • Cave explorations: Calaveras Country is home to numerous caverns which are open to the public. You don't have to be a spelunker to take a cavern tour; just bring your camera and your curiosity to enjoy an intriguing outing.
  • Historic tours: The gold rush era was one of the most colorful chapters in American history, and its fascinating details are best enjoyed through guided tours.
  • Forest excursions: Take a hike in the shaded canopy provided by majestic sequoias in the Stanislaus National Forest or Calaveras Big Trees State Park. These photogenic nature preserves make for excellent day trips.

During your stay in Calaveras County, opt for a vacation rental. They let you experience the region as the locals do, offering more space and privacy than hotels along with all the comforts and amenities you enjoy at home. Your options include spacious condos as well as secluded cabins in the woods and foothills.

Calaveras County is also ideally situated for further exploration during extended holidays. It's close to both Sacramento and San Francisco, which lie to the north and west, and if you head east, you'll get to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. The glitz and glamour of Las Vegas is also only a few hours' drive from Dorrington and Calaveras County.
