About Del Mar

With its lovely warm white sand, turquoise warm water and cypress trees lining the beach, Del Mar is as pretty as a picture. That even extends to downtown and its Bavarian-style center. Then there's that perfect climate—dry summers and humid winters. Book your Del Mar rental with FlipKey today!

About Del Mar

A pretty and elegantly upmarket beach suburb in California's San Diego County, Del Mar is famous for its horseracing track and huge annual county fair.

The town center includes upmarket boutiques, expensive restaurants and lots of ocean-view cafes for people watching.

Founded in 1885, it was developed as a holiday location, and by 1910 it was frequented by Hollywood silent movie stars. Its famous fairground opened in 1936 and became the main County Fair representing San Diego.

The formation of its horseracing track was led by Bing Crosby (who also opened it back in 1937). It's worth taking a look at during your trip.

Despite the passing decades, Hollywood stars still regard Del Mar as a go-to destination, both to vacation and live in. It counts many famous names among its residents. See who you can spot!

What to do

Take a stroll along Del Mar beach and check out the tide pools or sit in the sun and simply relax.

Go visit Free Flight, the bird sanctuary, for some fun with parrots and other rescue birds. You'll be able to feed and pet them, as well as get them to sit on your finger (well, the friendly ones!).

Pack a picnic and head for Seagrove Park. With an oceanfront view, this peaceful park is idyllic on your own or with a bunch of friends and family. There's a playground for kids and it's a popular spot for weddings.

Head to the ocean for a coached surfing session. The waves are perfect here and there are lots of locations in which to ride them. San Diego is the surfing capital of the States, after all!

Sample the artisanal food and drink at the Del Mar Farmer's Market. It's all delicious!

Top travel tips

If you walk along the train tracks to get to the beach then turn your headphones down low; there's a train that passes every 30 minutes or so, and you don't want to get run down! If you drive there, always arrive early to grab a parking spot.

It’s a 20-mile drive from San Diego international airport to Del Mar. Alternatively, there's a train station at nearby Solana Beach where you can then get a Breeze bus 101 into town—or walk (it's only a mile from Del Mar).

So, start searching for your Del Mar vacation rental with FlipKey. You'll be assured of gorgeous warm weather, a stunning beach, plenty of entertainment in the form of carnivals, race tracks and shopping and, finally, the chance to celeb-spot!
