Description from owner

Description

Tucked away in an exceptionally tranquil part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by wooded hills, country lanes and abundant wildlife, yet only a short drive to the Dorset and East Devon World Heritage Coast.  The popular seaside town of Lyme Regis, the charming fishing village of Beer and picturesque Branscombe are all within 15 minutes. A 30-minute drive will take you to the elegant Regency resort of Sidmouth.

The Byre is in the grounds of Bulmoor Farmhouse, which dates from 1797 and is listed by English Heritage as a building of “Special Architectural and Historical Importance”.   The present owners, using traditional skills and materials, have painstakingly restored both buildings, and the ancient cider apple orchard.   In the Byre, the generous dimensions of the former milking parlour, cowshed, large stable doors, hopper windows and high vaulted ceilings have all been retained, creating the quirky spaciousness that is the dominant feature of the accommodation.

Its attractions are year round, but at their very best in April to May when the woods and hedgerows are awash with wild flowers and the orchards are in full bloom  - The perfect hideaway for a coast and country holiday.

“Beautiful, tranquil and rustic idyll”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2017

We stayed here for a week in August and were amazed at the beautiful tranquil setting. The pictures on the website don't do it justice. The Byre is full of rustic charm. We were welcomed so warmly by Toni and Monica. Upon our arrival we were given elderflower presse, clotted cream, wine and a baked apple cake. The barn has a wonderful wood burning fire place (which we used just once as it was August) and the outside dining area is so pretty and has a barbecue that we were free to use. The farmhouse is stunning and our children loved exploring the grounds and the apple orchard. We used this as a great base to explore the beaches and local area.

Response from the owner Many thanks for the great review. Yes, "beautiful tranquil setting". Exactly what also brought us to this place 20 years ago after a large part of our life in extremely un-tranquil Hong Kong !

“Beautiful, idyllic”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2017

I, my wife and 2 girls came to stay at The Byre having been so taken by the pictures we had seen, and the excellent feedback. Well, it all fell short of the reality! The owners, Monica and Tony, immediately made us feel welcome, even baking a lovely apple cake. We wanted for nothing but new they were always on hand for any help/advice. The Byre has been beautifully converted and is full of character, with high ceilings, original split barn doors and a very cosy feel. The adjacent farmhouse and garden/orchards make a wonderful tranquil setting. There are abundant local walks through the stunning Dorset scenery, with small towns & the historic coastline 10 minutes away by car. We couldn't recommend it highly enough: thank you Monica & Tony for a wonderful holiday!
