Description from owner

Description

Situated just 20 minutes from Bath, Wells and Glastonbury, in the market town of Midsomer Norton, The Old Priory is reputed to be one of the oldest houses in Somerset, with records showing that it was first established in 1170. This historically significant building was an Augustinian Priory in early medieval times, later being seized by Henry VIII and bequeathed to Christchurch College, Oxford. It was owned by Christchurch until 1712 when it was sold to a private local buyer. A secret tunnel is said to have existed linking the nearby 15th century church to The Old Priory, which was possibly used for escape and refuge in the days of religious persecution. The building was later used as a school for young ladies in the Victorian and Edwardian era.Today, the ancient honeyed stonework and a beautiful walled garden bursting with colour in the summer months greet you upon entering the gravelled driveway. Within this Grade II* building many original architectural features are retained, including large inglenook fireplaces, flagstone floors and original oak beamed ceilings.

Getting around

We have a large car park for up to 10 cars in from of the building. Buses go from the town centre around two minutes walk to Bath, Bristol and Wells. The nearest train station is in Bath and there are plenty of local taxi firms. There are cycle paths on disused railway lines going off to Bath and Frome.

Interaction with guest

We live next door and will meet you when you arrive to give you the keys and show you around. Many groups have brought chefs in from outside and the professional kitchen is ideally set up for this. Otherwise we are usually around to help out if anything doesn't work or you just need help or advice.

“A wonderful place for a family gathering”

Reviewed 7 Sep 2021

We try to get our family, now totalling 15 aged 3 to 74, together once a year for a summer gathering. The Old Priory was perfect and we may well use it again. The large, enclosed and relatively bomb-proof garden is superb for children's games. Croquet and big BBQ are provided. The kitchen is hotel-grade and thus excellent for preparing large meals. Very well equipped. The dining area is huge; plenty of space for eating as well as holiday projects - we did tee-shirt tie-dying and glass painting. Two reception rooms: one with a huge TV, mainly used by the children, and one for just chatting and sipping wine, (mainly used by the adults!) Bedrooms comfortable and spacious. Hosts very helpful; descrete but there if you needed them. Suited us fine.

“Birthday at the Old Priory”

Reviewed 8 Jan 2018

We have just had an amazing weekend at the Old Priory for my 60th Birthday. Such a wonderful old house, full of character and so warm and cosy. Matt and Melody couldn’t have been more helpful -plus they served a mouthwatering and imaginative Dinner on Saturday in the beautiful dining room. We were five couples, we all loved our rooms, the log fire in the sitting room was perfect for long chats with tea and cake and the kitchen was well stocked and great to work in. Of all the amazing choice of places to visit, we walked in Cheddar Gorge and visited Wells which we can recommend. We would love to come back.
