Description

“A charming country retreat, in a unique, private and tranquil setting”

Rothley Lodge is a magnificent country period holiday home set within 6 acres of parkland with mature woods, duck flight pond and lawned gardens with picturesque woodland paths leading down to the properties own river where quiet walks or private fishing can be enjoyed.

COVID-19 Cleaning Protocol - We include an additional fee of £85 to cover additional costs to sanitize the property with EN standard approved products by our Visit England - Covid approved cleaners between every booking. A copy of our 'Enhanced Cleaning Protocol', 'Risk Assessment', and the 'Detailed Cleaning Checklists' are available for guests to view inside the property in our Covid-19 enhanced cleaning file.

On the edge of the Northumberland National Park, near Morpeth and Rothbury, Rothley Lodge was built in Victorian times as the shooting lodge for Wallington Hall (National Trust - 4 miles away). Rothley Lodge has an abundance of character and charm, with very high luxury standards including beautiful period furnishings to add to your country house holiday experience.

Rothley Lodge offers spacious but homely and comfortable self-catering cottage accommodation, ideal for a relaxing holiday, special celebration or family get-together with a truly unique, private and tranquil setting to enjoy the ultimate country living experience.

Every season is a wonderful experience to cherish at Rothley Lodge, whilst sharing this peaceful haven with only the wildlife that frequently visit the grounds, roe deer, red squirrels, badgers and a fantastic selection of bird life for the budding bird watchers.

In Spring/Summer, you can picnic on the many lawn areas available or relax on the timber decking and enjoy alfresco dining with the use of our gas fired BBQ whilst lounging in comfort on the garden lounge furniture or for those short autumn/winter days, get cosy by the roaring log fire in the family living room.

For the music lovers, enjoy a pleasant evening playing the properties Victorian Grand Piano, although a little out of tune, a little sing song for entertainment, will add to your memorable family gathering.

The self-catering accommodation at Rothley Lodge has been designed with luxury in mind, retaining the period nature of the property with period and antique furnishings, whilst providing a boutique and modern feel throughout.

Enjoy a pleasant social evening with a glass of fine wine in the kitchen/dining area whilst preparing your evening meal on the four oven AGA range, followed by a rare dining experience in the formal dining room.

The property offers three individually decorated double rooms with king size beds, one of which has an ensuite with travertine tiled shower room and toilet, all with glorious views over the properties parkland, gardens or the ravine leading down to the river.

A cot is available in the en suite double room and a further temporary guest bed is available for one of the other double rooms if an extra guest is required. There are a further two twin bedrooms, all very accessible for the family bathroom, tiled in travertine with period roll top bath, rain shower room and toilet.

Wildlife & Bird Watching

At Rothley Lodge, we have an abundance of garden wildlife and birds to be seen for the keen watchers. We are very careful to protect the wild and natural landscape within the grounds to maintain the habitat for wildlife.

We still have Red Squirrels within the grounds, although working with the national trust at Wallington Hall to keep down the spreading Grey Squirrels in the area. Roe Deer are frequent within the grounds, or you may simply see them passing along the riverbanks to quieter locations, early morning or at dusk.

If you are prepared to sit patiently and quietly down by the river, you may see the otter or the blue glistening flash of the Kingfisher flying along the Burn.

Butterflies such as Orange Tips or Meadow Browns can be seen and an abundance of Dragonflies and Damselflies.

The Birds that frequent our grounds are listed below:

Frequent Birds

Blackcap - Goldcrest - Long-tailed Ti* - Sparrowhawk

Tree House & Kids Play Area (CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION)

We are currently constructing a Tree House and Children's play area, due to be complete for use sometime in the Spring of 2018 (weather dependent).

The Treehouse and Decking may be used by both Children and Adults as a play den or a summer house raised up at a height of approximately 8ft overlooking the South facing gardens.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

There is an unfenced pond and river in the grounds, with some significant drops in certain areas of the grounds of the property, so care needs to be taken with young children. However the property is typical countryside yet still very much an adventure playground for children but care and supervision is necessary.

The banister height is 80cm, and the gaps between the spindles are 10cm.

“Charming getaway!”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2019

Rotheby Lodge is a charming getaway for a group of friends or family! With lots of space and located in quiet surroundings, it has fabulous views onto greenery and wildlife, a big communal kitchen and living areas for entertainment. And being a little tucked away, it makes a stay feel like a real adventure of discovery and offers a wonderful home to get away from the busy day to day.

“A spacious country getaway in the heart of Northumberland.”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2017

Our family stayed for a week while we explored Northumberland for the first time. This is a beautiful home nestled in a rather fairy-tale setting with the beautiful gardens, nearby river and farmlands. It is a pretty easy drive from here to attractions like Alnwick and even closer to Cragside, as well as having easy access to stunning coastal driving routes and the North Sea. It was great for us to be so close to the coast whilst feeling like we were in the heart of the countryside! Plus, the owners were helpful, available and ever so friendly.

We recently stayed for a week at Rothley Lodge with our family and have to say the property is beautiful and the surrounding countryside breathtaking. The stay was made all the better for the hospitality of the owners Damien and Lorraine who were always there when we needed anything. We will definately be returning in the future

“Fabulous holiday!”

Reviewed 7 Mar 2017

We came to celebrate a 50th birthday with 9 family members, ranging in age from 18 months to 64 years. We all had a fantastic time. The house is beautiful, but very comfortable and well-equipped. The grounds are amazing and we loved exploring them. Damian and Lorraine were incredibly helpful with any minor issues we had. I hope to come back and explore more of this beautiful part of the world from this lovely house.

“Lots to do in the area”

Reviewed 9 Nov 2016

We had a great week exploring the area with extended family to celebrate granny's 80th birthday. The house is perfect - and the owner is extremely keen that it stays that way! The rule book emailed in advance and pointed out carefully on arrival makes that very clear. You can't even close the blinds in case you crumple them. And using the piano is banned so it needs to be taken out of the particulars really. Unfortunately, one of the fridge freezers didn't work so we were a bit stuck with only one small freezer for a week for 10 people. We had to pay extra for deep cleaning as we had a dog with us, but as the dog was only allowed in the small rear porch I am not sure why we had to pay this. The gardens are extensive though, so as long as it is warm weather you can relax outside. There is lots to do in the surrounding area - National Trust houses and gardens, Alnwick Castle and gardens, the coast, Hadrian's Wall and pretty villages nearby. Overall, we made it a fantastic week but it is a shame we didn't feel we could really relax in the property.

Response from the owner Dear Guest We are pleased you enjoyed your week holiday, however we are sorry you felt some negative points regarding the property and your stay. Just to clarify, you refer to a 'rule book' which is in fact a guide to the property which explains everything you need to know for safety, security, emergencies and details to make your stay comfortable. Most guests really appreciate the guide and commented positively in previous reviews. The unfortunate situation with the fridge freezer, could not have been replaced in time for your stay, however replaced now. The property does have sufficient refrigeration with two large capacity 60/40 fridge freezers and one medium capacity separate fridge, which has always proved sufficient for all guest parties. The piano is not banned from use, we actually encourage use of the grand piano, however we do always ask guests to respect the age of 1860 and handle with care due to its delicate nature. Unfortunately we do need to charge an additional fee for dogs and deep cleaning to ensure the property is free from dog odours and hairs for follow on guests who may have allergies. Our terms do make it clear that dogs are allowed but not allowed on the furnishings or beds and must sleep in their own dog basket in the rear porch. We are extremely sorry you felt you couldn't relax, we aim to make the property as relaxing as its location and most guests we believe do in fact find the experience very relaxing which previous reviews show. We thank you for your valued booking and your honesty in your review. Kindest regards Rothley Lodge
