Description

STICKY END:

Ideal for couples and perfect for a romantic escape, this charming Grade II Listed thatched cottage has been lovingly restored and furnished to a very high standard to provide a warm and welcoming holiday or short break retreat. Sticky End is located on the Main Street (B668) of the busy & bustling conservation village of Cottesmore in England's smallest county, Rutland.

Sticky End is an ideal base for exploring the region including the nearby busy market & impressive public school towns of Oakham and Uppingham, and is only 10 miles from historic Stamford (filming for the 2005 movie Pride & Prejudice and TV's Middlemarch). Rutland is a truly unspoiled rural gem in the heart of Middle England.

Rutland Water, along with the surrounding countryside and villages, provide a beautiful back drop for sailing, water sports, fishing, cycling, bird watching, golf and walking. Traditional country pubs offer excellent cuisine, stately homes such as Belvoir Castle, magnificent Burghley House (home of the famous Burghley Horse Trials and popular film set) and National Trust properties including Woolsthorpe Manor (Sir Issac Newton's Home) and Belton House at Grantham are within a short drive, whilst shopping tends to be "unique and antique" and a pleasurable world away from the shopping centre chains. Geoff Hamilton's legacy of his famous Barnsdale Gardens are close by.

The Stamford Shakespeare Festival (June-August) is held annually at Tolethorpe Hall where a picnic on the lawns, a stroll around the lawn, pond and flowerbeds and shrubberies all add to the magic of a visit to Rutland Open Air Theatre to experience the annual summer Shakespeare Festival (9th June-29th August 2020 - Love's Labour's Lost, Romeo & Juliet, The Importance of Being Earnest).

Rockingham Motor Speedway and Rockingham Castle lie just to the south of Rutland. The Stunning Belvoir Castle stands splendidly in the Vale of Belvoir just a short drive to the north.

Richard III: In the summer of 2012, archaeologists from the University of Leicester, working with Leicester City Council and the Richard III Society, unearthed the ruins of the lost medieval Grey Friars church and within the ruins, the grave of a battle-scarred warrior. Until Spring 2014, The Guildhall, in the shadow of Leicester Cathedral, hosts a major exhibition telling the story of King Richard III, his life and times and the search for his lost remains. From nearby Oakham, Little Thatch guests can catch a direct train into Leicester city centre, or indeed drive in approximately 40 minutes.

London: From Oakham you can also catch a train to Peterborough on the East Coast Mainline for connections directly into London for a day trip to the capital.

“Beautiful cosy thatched cottage with a real log fire”

Reviewed 25 Oct 2021

This cottage was immaculate, everything we needed was provided. It was very tastefully decorated, unique, comfy beds, spotless including the bathroom - we could not fault a thing, the attention to detail was excellent. The owners could not have been more welcoming and went out of their way to help us settle in - we didn't want to leave and would definitely visit again. In the visitors book were many repeat guests - we hope to be too. We very highly recommend this cottage for anyone looking for a break away in this area.
