About York Beach
The history of York Beach is entwined with that of the state of Maine and York, a city in the state. It's a long history—you can still see the Old Goal in York, which dates back to 1719, although it was built with materials from the original goal, built in 1656.
Maine is definitely part of New England, although it is different from New Hampshire and Vermont. It has an interesting mix of people who originally came from Ireland, Scotland, and French-speaking Canada.
If you go to Maine, you have to try its lobster, with or with or without clams and corn on the cob. Follow that up with a dessert based on Maine blueberries. Or try the saltwater taffy at the Goldenrod, which has been a traditional treat for over 100 years.
What to do in York Beach
This village has two beaches—Long Sands and Short Sands—and sits on the Atlantic coast. Long Sands is a glorious two-mile stretch of pure white sand. Hike up Mount Agamenticus. There's a picnic area at the top. It has hiking trails to suit all ability levels and is the perfect way to spend a day.
