Description from owner
Description
In 1759 this cottage in Sandwich, UK, was the home and shop of Thomas Paine, founding father of the United States and French Republic. He created the phrase 'United States of America', and was author of three of the bestsellers of the eighteenth century, including the cornerstone of American democracy, Common Sense plus the bible of English radicalism, the Rights of Man.
The cottage now provides a unique holiday experience in the most complete medieval town in England. Following a careful restoration this cottage will transport you back in time with its period furniture and wonderful old beams. Come and learn about the life of Thomas Paine, browse the collection of revolutionary period literature and of course the works of Tom Paine himself.
The cottage is larger than the frontage would suggest having had a Victorian kitchen extension. There is a good sized living room with a reading area. The stairs lead to a bedroom with two period single beds and a wonderful early Victorian dresser of mahogany, the upstairs rooms are wonderfully characterful with their beamed ceilings and walls and floors with extraordinary slopes on them. The next bedroom has a beautiful mahogany double bed from ~ 1870. The bathroom upstairs has both a shower and bath. There is a log fire in the living room and a good supply of logs is included in the rental fee. Parking is free of charge in the Guildhall car park a few minutes walk from the cottage. There is a south facing cottage garden for visitors to enjoy, it's carefully tended and is a typical English cottage garden full of flowers during the summer months.

“Lovely cottage in fabulous Sandwich”
We booked this last minute break and had the best time. The cottage is lovely and full of character. It’s perfectly located in lovely Sandwich which is just beautiful and full of lots of lovely restaurants, pubs and shops. It made a perfect base for us to visit lots of the Kent coast with our two girls. Would def recommend and hope to return soon.

“Mid winter break”
Received clear instructions from owner, Robin, about entry, parking, heating etc We opened the door to greeted by the warmth from the log burner. As the property is old, it had plenty of character, with irregular floors upstairs The cottage is conveniently situated in the centre if the town and those local tourist destinations, such as Canterbury Cathedral, Dover cliffs, vineyards, castles etc. Although our break was mid winter, we were blessed with warm sunshine on three of the 4 days we spent there - we even managed breakfast outside in the garden on the last day.
