Description from owner

Description

The Grist Mill is an early 18th-century watermill, a Grade 2 landmark listed building which sleeps up to 8 in four double bedrooms in a romantic Cotswold valley setting. It has been restored as a gem of a holiday home, with contemporary comfort and style. Surmounted by lantern and cupola.

The ground floor has an entrance hall leading to a large open-plan kitchen-cum-dining/ living room, with two sofas, arm chairs and a snug wood-burning stove in addition to the central heating. The kitchen is in fitted pine, with dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave and an antique pine table set with ash chairs designed by Ernest Gimson.

Wooden stairs lead to the first floor (stone floor of the mill), which sleeps four. The master bedroom has a rare and opulent early eighteenth-century oak four-poster king-sized bed. The second bedroom has twin beds. Both bedrooms have beautiful views over the mill pond. There is a small bathroom with bath and overbath showerhead. The ample landing preserves a number of original mill features and the original loading-door opens to the west.

The second floor (granary floor), acts as a hide for the bird life on the mill pond, with early 19th-century bolting machinery carefully preserved. Original elm stairs (steep and unsuitable for very young children or the elderly); a door keeps the stairs closed off from children. Here is a large double bedroom with king-sized bed and an open children's room, with two single beds. A second bathroom makes this four-bedroomed cottage comfortable for eight guests.

Above this floor is a gantry cat-walk. A sack-hoist hangs in the cupola, whence light filters down through successive levels of glazed floor lights set in the traps.

The Grist Mill is one of nine award-winning holiday cottages tucked away in the heart of the Owlpen valley in the most spectacular part of the Cotswold hills, altogether sleeping about 40 people. Ideal for weddings, private parties and family gatherings.

This historic watermill is set below the Manor kitchen garden, with lovely views over the mill pond and valley. It has its own drive and enclosed garden, including a large table for al fresco dining. The private garden offers complete serenity, with the constant murmur of the Ewelme brook running gently by.

Response from the owner Thanks to lemfrench86 for their comments about their stay at Owlpen. We always like to discuss issues with guests while they are staying here, instead of going through online portals, but sadly were not given the opportunity on this occasion. The house has been re-decorated with new bathrooms in early 2019, so hopefully you would find it a cosy, beautiful place if you returned to stay with us here at Owlpen.
