Description from owner

Description

Milk Maid's Cottage is a lovely two- bedroom former dairy adjacent to the owners' 18th Century farmhouse, with exposed stonework and lots of interesting nooks and features. Situated at the top of the attractive grey stone village of Kniveton, the cottage is fully equipped with everything the holidaymaker could want.

The cottage has one double bedroom and one twin, a bathroom with bath and shower over, a well-appointed and spacious kitchen diner and comfortable living area with a TV and DVD player as well as a wide selection of books on the area. There is also a put-up bed in the lounge which has ample room for one person. Milk and home-made cakes are normally provided for guests on arrival, however with Covid-19 precautions we won't be offering this until advice changes. We are taking the cleaning guidelines about ensuring the safety of our guests very seriously!

With a barbecue and outside seating area, the cottage has shared use of our large garden, which contains lots of mature trees and seating as well as a pretty stream with wooden bridge over. In the summer months you may be lucky enough to spot our free-range tortoise among the flower beds! Guests are also welcome to use our free-standing fire pit if you arrange it with us in advance.

We're lucky to have our local pub, The Red Lion only a short stroll down the hill, which serves a wide selection of interesting beers and wine, and really wonderful freshly-cooked food using local ingredients.

The charming little church is next door, famous for its tower and font, both dating back to the 13th Century.

Miles of public footpaths cross the rolling fields all around, and there are many walks starting from the front door.

Carsington Water is just up the road, with its visitors centre, miles of footpaths and children's play area to explore. Beautiful Dovedale, famous for its stepping stones, and Black Rocks Country Park are a short drive away.

Not forgetting the UK's premier theme park, Alton Towers which is 20 miles away.

Our favourite places to visit include antique shopping in Matlock and Wirksworth; ascending to the Heights of Abraham by cable car in the old Victorian spa town of Matlock Bath; and cycling the path of the old Ashbourne to Buxton railway line along the Tissington Trail.

Ample private parking, including secure garaging on request, make this an ideal holiday choice.

If you are interested in a two night stay please send an enquiry and we will try to fit you in where we can. Also note that The Creamery is at the same location, and the two cottages can be booked together to accommodate 9 people.

“Excellent Character Cottage”

Reviewed 28 Jul 2020

Milk Maid's Cottage is a delightful character cottage in Kniveton, The location is ideal for walking in the Peak District and the local area, which was the aim of our weekend break. Liam, the owner was welcoming and most helpful. We found the cottage to be very clean and comfortable, with a large dining kitchen (all amenities provided) and a cosy spacious lounge with two 2-seater sofas and a separate armchair. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one double and one with twin beds, and a well equipped bathroom with bath and overhead shower. Copious hot water was available for the whole of our stay. So important after a hard days walking. This was undoubtedly the best accommodation we have enjoyed whilst holidaying in the UK. Our stay was fairly early into the period after the easing of coronavirus restrictions for self catering properties. Liam had every angle covered as regards protocols in place at the cottage, and we were reassured by his exact and careful preparations for our holiday. Our first meal out after the lockdown was enjoyed at The Red Lion in Kniveton. We booked in advance and we were pleased by how effectively the pub operated to conform with the government guidelines. A full menu was on offer, and our food and the service was excellent. It was so good to be back in the "pub", always an important part of our holiday. Many thanks to Hannah, Kev and Gav. A great weekend proving that a staycation can be best !! Andrew and Belinda
