Excellent Old San Juan location near everything cultural, historical and restaurants! Loved being surrounded by the beautiful Spanish styled homes, cobbled streets and our host was helpful and engaging. Our patio was a true delight, a nice quiet place in the middle of Old San Juan!
“Charming Old San Juan casa”
My wife, 8 year old daughter, 2 year old son and I stayed at Casa Arana over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The apartment comfortably accomodated all 4 of us, with my wife and I sharing the queen bed and my daughter on the sofa bed. Olivia and Luis also kindly provided a pac n'play for my son. As expected in such an old traditional apartment, the bathroom is a little small. There is also no bath tub, which may be awkward if you have very young children. Although my 2 year old quite enjoyed taking a shower instead of his usual bath!! There is no TV, but there is wireless if you feel the need to get online. My children were able to use their Kindle's for entertainment no problem. Olivia was very responsive during the whole booking process which gave me a good sense of security. Everything was as promised and Luis was there to greet us on arrival and hand over the keys. As mentioned in other reviews, the location is unbeatable, and is also very private and secure. You really feel like you are living among the locals as opposed to a tourist area full of hotels. There were quite a few mosquitos, but we are used to that coming from Florida. The apartment comes with mosquito nets over all the beds but you will also need some repellent too, which you can buy from the Walgreens down the street. Overall my family and I really enjoyed our stay at Casa Arana in Old San Juan. Thanks again to Olivia and Luis.
“Great Location, Comfy accomodations and Wonderful Hosts”
I think the title to this review says it all! Starting with the hosts who were both very responsive and accommodating. Though the apartment is a one bedroom, the hosts graciously took care of our request for a second bed to be set up. The apartment is simply furnished but comfy - there is no air conditioning but it does cool down at night and the fans are all you need. Location wise, the apartment is within easy walking distance of all the major sights. We did not have a car so took the local bus to nearby locations e.g., Condado and then tours to El Yunque and Farjardo bio bay. The companies pick up at the major hotels. We took advantage of the fridge to keep our fruit and water cold. Food/drink wise, there's a SuperMax (small, local supermarket) located close by at Plaza de armas and if you're visiting on a Saturday, the Mercado agricole Natural (small organic farmers market) is also located about 2 blocks away.
“Oasis within walking distance of everything”
We stayed at Casa arana for 12 days and loved the place. It has character and and elegance. Luis, who lives up stairs was always on hand if we had a question. To us the location was absolutely ideal. We could walk to a large selection of restaurants, go to Mass in the Cathedral around the corner as well as shop for groceries and gifts nearby. We enjoyed the lovely sunsets from a number of little parks overlooking San Juan Bay. Since we are interested in history the forts and Ponce De Leons house we walked to these sights and also all along the perimeter of the old city wall. For sights further afield we took tours to the rain forest, the bioluminescent lagoon, the arecibo conservatory and the caves. All great.
“Great Location for Seeing Old San Juan”
Located in a residential neighborhood, the apartment is a nice, clean apartment located in the heart of Old San Juan. Both of us found it very comfortable. We did not use the mosquito netting; we did turn on the two floor fans and the overhead fan and the air movement seemed to keep the mosquitoes away. There was bug spray in the apartment for our use and it was needed when we left the protection of the air. Air conditioning would have been nice as it was hot and humid in San Juan, but we found that the fans were adequate. From here you can walk and see all the sights of Old San Juan; the historical forts, the old city wall, churches, etc. There are drugstores, and a good grocery store located at the north end of the Plaza de las armas. There are several restaurants that are located in any direction from the apartment and within a couple blocks. The trolley had stops in Plaza de las armas; a nice park down the hill from the apartment. We spent a couple of evenings setting in the Plaza next to the fountain, just watching the people. There was an apartment up stairs and realized one morning as we were eating breakfast in the patio garden that maybe we should not be in our pajamas, though we did not ever see anyone. The apartment is easily accessible from the airport via a cab; the fare was $19 plus $1 per bag and tip. If you plan on seeing Old San Juan, this is the ideal base from which to start each day.
On our 4th trip to San Juan we decided to get away from the Hotels and try a vacation rental in the beautiful Old San Juan. The location of this apartment was in walking distance for all sites in Old San Juan. We also rented a car for a portion of our trip and since parking is free on the streets we did not have to pay crazy hotel parking prices. Overall the apartment was beautiful and very relaxing. Wish we would have stayed in more but we were up and out by 8:00 am every day, so we did not use much of the facilities. Not having a air conditioner was not an issue for us as we live on a Island and are used to the heat. I did however have a ongoing war with the Mosquito's (but that was every where is San Juan)and used up plenty of off! Can't wait to go back, and will definitely stay at Casa arana!
“Perfect location - Quiet Getaway”
We stayed 3 nights at Casa arana. Luis was a fabulous host and was there to greet us even though we were very late in our arrival. The apartment is very quiet and we loved having our coffee each morning out in the central garden. The weather was unseasonably warm/humid during our stay, so the lack of aC did make sleeping a challenge. The location is perfect though for exploring Old San Juan and it's also close to a grocery and Walgreens, as well as some wonderful restaurants.
“Old San Juan + Patio Garden”
We stayed in the apartment the week of Oct 13 and explored not only Old San Juan but also the whole island from there! Apartment is very spacious and we loved having our coffee at the patio table in the morning. The garden lizards provided us our morning entertainment. Olivia and Luis made the process easy and gave us lots of tips. Upside - location and spacious. Downside - no air conditioning (it was tougher than we expected) and periodic water stops.
“The Essence of Old San Juan”
We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay @ the Casa arana...the location was fantastic...one block to Plaza de las armas with its restaurants, drug stores, an excellent grocery store and not more than a couple of blocks to the entrance to the Morro Castle. Several blocks in different directons brings you to all the coffee shops, restaurants, tourist stores, museums, and art galleries and local color you could want in Old San Juan. Being in a spacious apartment with kitchen and living room and patio allows you to entertain if you want and more importantly hang out in comfort and style while you recharge your batteries. There is no aC but the walls are thick, there are numerous roof and floor fans and the interior is totally shaded so that it remains cool...living in the open with the arched doorways open to the patio garden really gives you the flavor of what is was like to live here four hundred years ago and beats a small cramped hotel room any day! Having a kitchen is a great convenience as you can save money by preparing some of your own food not to mention all the time saved from having to go out every time you want a cup of tea or a sandwich. Would love to stay for a month if I could!
