Description

Sweetheart Cottage is romantic, and full of character. Set in a quiet hillside lane where flowers tumble over walls in the peaceful and picturesque Oxfordshire village of Swalcliffe, access is gained by a short set of stairs from the front door at road level or through a cobbled passageway to the side of the property leading to a pretty garden with shallow stream. Two patios provide 'al fresco' dining space and a herb garden provides fresh flavour for your holiday recipes!

Sweetheart Cottage is in the perfect location for walkers, cyclists and families to enjoy countryside pursuits or to simply sit and relax in ambient surroundings. It is is just a few metres walk from the local pub, the church, and a magnificent Tithe Barn. Footpaths leading from the village, pass through gently rolling hills and beautiful byways. The cottage is an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful Cotswolds: within easy reach are the market towns of Shipston-on-Stour, Chipping Norton and Banbury, all only 10 minutes drive away. ‘Shakespeare’s Stratford’, is just a 15 minute drive. It is also possible to explore southern Warwickshire and Northamptonshire with ease. A little further afield but still within easy reach can be found the ‘dreaming spires’ of Oxford, racing at Silverstone, designer shopping at Bicester, a delightful small theatre at Chipping Norton, Blenheim Palace at Woodstock, and historic Warwick Castle. Swalcliffe village is in an ideal location for visiting many National Trust properties, such as Charlecote Park or Farnborough Hall. Nearby villages are brought to life with country pubs and restaurants. Other local points of interest include stone circles, civil war battle fields, potteries and breweries.

We believe in fair pricing. We do not increase prices for regional events or at 'peak' times and no supplements are requested for winter fuel.

Getting around

Because of the beautiful location and the availability of an English Country pub, serving good food, just a stone's throw away it is not necessary to have a car to hand. Visitors may relax in the location and while away the hours with ease. However, for those wishing to explore further afield there is a bus route through the village connecting Banbury, Shipston on Stour and Stratford upon Avon via the North Oxfordshire villages. From these country towns it is possible to access places of interest across the wider area. Alternatively, visitors may bring a car to provide the ultimate flexibility for days out in the Cotswolds and beyond.

“Quaint and quirky cottage”

Reviewed 17 Jun 2021

A beautifully appointed cottage, modern yet homely. Every detail was thought of, from the matching crockery to The White Company toiletries. The welcome hamper of goodies was a lovely surprise. Huge attention to detail. We made an error and miscalculated our check out date so had to leave in 20 mins to enable Valerie to prep the cottage for her next visitors who wanted an early check in, causing her unnecessary stress. We wish we were aware of the option for an earlier check in though because the 7 page of helpful notes provided on payment makes it clear on 16:00pm and we sat outside in our car for an hour watching the clock. This truly is a super special cottage. Just a couple of small points would be that we were not aware of the shared back entrance and that the neighbours would be passing by with their wheeley bins and coming to and from their home passing the cottage back door. This included the workmen from next door too. We were sat at the table and chairs outside the back door having breakfast when the neighbours had to get passed with their wheeley bin. Also, because everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is perfect in the cottage, with no expense spared, the towels provided are very very small. We are warned about this in the 7 page notes so we were aware, but it seems such a shame when every other consideration is taken care of.

Response from the owner We thank our visitors for taking the time to write a review and for the positive comments about the cottage. We understand that honest reviews are very helpful to travellers and so we feel we must correct the above or travellers will be misinformed. An error was certainly made with regard to our guests miscalculating; they thought they had booked four nights when, in fact, they had booked only three. We spent a whole day attempting to make contact with our guests on the appointed check-out day but to no avail. It was fortunate that, by chance, the next guests were unable to arrive until the following morning. The late checkout (a self-imposed rush to pack) and the pre-planned early arrival meant that we had to work through the night to ensure that the cottage was fully prepared. We advise travellers to check their dates carefully so as not to be in breach of the Booking Conditions and other provided information which set out, quite clearly, the check-in and checkout times. The information manual in the cottage also sets out, clearly, that the cottage provides an historical access route to a neighbouring cottage. We must point out that workmen are not permanent fixtures and their work just happened to coincide with the above booking. This, of course, is beyond our own control. We always advise travellers to read the information manual upon arrival to benefit from the useful information within and to make the best of their stay. We look forward to welcoming travellers who abide by the Booking Conditions and who are looking for a holiday experience provided by principled owners.

“Everything you could wish for!”

Reviewed 3 Nov 2020

My husband, daughter and I stayed here for 3 nights at the end of half term. What a beautiful place. The cottage is comfortable, immaculate and well appointed. The owners have thought of everything and it really was a home from home. Lovely welcome hamper, beautiful soft white bedding, warm and cozy with lovely extra touches. Even my monosyllabic teenage daughter raved about the place! It is in the perfect location for exploring the Cotswolds. It is, by far, the best holiday cottage we have EVER stayed in and I am fussy!!! We hope to return very soon.

Response from the owner An accolade indeed! We are delighted to be considered 'the best'. Thank you. As discerning travellers ourselves we try to provide what we, ourselves, would like to see in a holiday let and to treat our guests as we would wish to be treated. A little thought can go a long way.

“Wonderful Little Cottage With Very Thoughtful Owners”

Reviewed 29 May 2019

My wife, daughter and I had a lovely short stay in this wonderful little cottage. It is beautifully decorated and well kitted out. The owners are incredibly thoughtful with white goods toiletries and a welcome basket of milk, honey, pasta, oil, eggs, biscuits, etc. They even left a little wind up toy frog for my 18 month old daughter, which she still plays withQ The setting is beautiful and I can't really fault the cottage at all, we'd throughly recommend staying here. I will only add that if you have a child that is a light sleeper, there is only the bedroom door that separates them from the living room and the open mezzanine main bedroom. This was fine for us, but might be helpful to know for some!
