“A beautiful and peaceful house.”

Reviewed 26 Aug 2018

The Blue House is a charming place to stay. It is in a great position, an easy walk to the shops and coffee shops, and right next to Berwick's historic walls. The house itself is very well equipped and tastefully decorated, with a blue theme throughout. We loved the roof terrace and the sun room. The owners obviously care about providing a nice place to stay and there is a thoughtful welcome basket on arrival. The Blue House is full of character and we had a lovely few days exploring Berwick.

Response from the manager Thank you for your review, although I am sorry that your stay with us did not meet with your expectations. With regard to your deposit, let me be clear that TripAdvisor take, hold and refund all deposits. There was no issue raised by us during the stay and I can confirm that the deposit was refunded in full by TripAdvisor. Please contact them for confirmation. I am sorry if you felt that we had withheld any monies but all deposits are dealt with by TripAdvisor in accordance with their terms and conditions which are explained to you when booking. Claiming we withheld your deposit because of your feedback is upsetting and simply untrue. We welcome all feedback as we are always looking to improve. Again I can only apologise for the fact that your holiday was spoiled by the building work opposite. As we discussed when I met with you there had been an error on the TripAdvisor website which meant that our disclaimer about the building works had not loaded as we are very open with guests about the works despite the fact they are outwith our control. As you weren’t aware in advance I felt it only fair to offer you the option of a refund should you decide to leave and stay in alternative accommodation, or compensation if you decided to stay on in the house. You decided you wished to stay and accepted the £400 compensation offered. I am surprised there is no mention of this in your review as I believed we had worked out a fair solution you were happy with. It is a shame that you did not mention any cleanliness issues when we met to discuss the building works as we would have been delighted to have rectified any issues for you. We are also making every effort to counter the small areas of historic damp within the property, but as with all old buildings this is an on going battle. These small decorative issues I believe to only be minor and I don’t believe they prevent you from enjoying the space provided. Certainly it hasn’t been a problem for any of our other guests and we have priced the property according to its condition. The Blue House is not pretending to be a luxury 5 star property but a quirky, cosy and comfortable 3 star in a great location for exploring Berwick and Northumberland. As owners we go out of our way to try and ensure our guests enjoy the property by meeting them on arrival and being on hand should any issues arise during the stay. I do hope your review, which I believe unreasonable (and totally untrue with regards to the deposit not being refunded), does not stand in the way of other guests enjoying their time at the Blue House.
