Description from owner

Description

Delightful traditional Northumbrian Cottage in the grounds of a private c16 country estate in the heart of north Northumberland. Uniquely, Secluded but not far away from local amenities. Perfect place for relaxed get away with friends and family or as a base for local outdoor sporting activities. Equidistant between all the major tourist attractions in the area.

2 generous bedrooms, one bathroom, one dining room, cosy sitting room with log burner, bathroom/toilet, pantry area and small storage area. Set away from a very quiet road, off road parking directly in front of the Cottage. Large back garden (enclosed and away from road). Oil heating system. Fridge freezer, oven and microwave in kitchen. Washing machine in pantry. Complimentary wifi.

Our delightful Cottage is set in the grounds of a 16th century country estate in the heart of north Northumberland. It is the perfect location for a quiet and relaxing getaway for couples, friends or a small family. Alternatively it is the perfect base for a more active sightseeing, walking, fishing or shooting trip. Uniquely, there are numerous horse riding stables in the vicinity (please enquire) some of the best pheasant and grouse shooting in the country and a professionally managed clay shoot less than two miles from the cottage for the more adventurous types (please enquire). There are more places to eat and drink than you will get round and more activities for young and old than you will have time for on just one visit. Below is a small selection to give you an idea.

Alnwick Castle (of Harry Potter filming fame) is 25 minutes drive away.

Bamburgh Beach is 20 minutes away by car. This beach is stunning (as is the castle that dominates the skyline). Numerous places to eat and drink (please ask us on arrival - we will be very happy to recommend);

Embleton, Seahouses and Low Newton are arguably even more spectacular beaches with more great pubs and restaurants (please ask us on arrival - we will be very happy to recommend);

The most haunted castle in Britain (Chillingham) is five minutes drive away and offers regularly scheduled ghost tours (which we highly recommend - details in the Guidebook available in the Cottage);

Sampling the local produce is easy. There are several shops in nearby Wooler (3 miles away) selling lovely locally made food;

The closest pub is in Chatton (1 mile away walking over the countryside using public rights of way or 2 miles driving). Welcoming, full of locals and very friendly.

There are countryside walks along public rights of way you can access directly from Fowberry Tower. Alternatively use Wooler as your base for treks to venture further afield. Holy Island is only 25 minutes away. People travel to Northumberland for this experience alone; and depending on the time of year, there are Dolphin and Puffin tours within 30 minutes drive also.

Within the garden of the Cottage, you may see red squirrels, wild deer, buzzards, badgers and foxes. If you're lucky you'll also see the resident nesting owls. Please observe them respectfully from a distance and be sure to bring your camera with you.

If you want a lazy, cosy relaxing stay, that's precisely what you can have. If you want adventure and sight-seeing, it's all on your doorstep. Regardless of whether you're relaxing or exploring, we want to make your stay perfect so we have the pleasure of welcoming you back time after time. No detail will be overlooked. If there is anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable, please do not hesitate to let us know!

Enjoy your stay

Getting around

The best taxi firm locally is 'Ron's Taxis' (see Guidebook available in the Cottage). Closest railway stations are Berwick (to the North) and Alnmouth (to the South). Both are approximately 30 minutes drive away from the Cottage. There are buses but they are infrequent given the rural location. You need a car to make the most of your trip here.

“Comfy cottage in unique location”

Reviewed 19 Sep 2021

We had a wonderful week in this lovely cottage with our two dogs. The setting is outstanding, with a Narnia-esque entrance to the estate from the back garden. The main house and immediate grounds have an intriguing air of abandonment, which whilst sad meant that we had the run of the place. The cottage itself is clean, snug and nicely furnished. The living room was larger than expected, and very cosy with the log burner going. We really enjoyed spending our evenings in there, curled up under a blanket with a book. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and we both slept like logs! Phone signal was pretty much non-existent, but the internet was very speedy (once it got going - you may need to reset the router a few times to get it to work). Craig was quick to respond to the minor problem we had with the boiler, and got it fixed the next day with no fuss. We’d definitely recommend a stay here, either for a quiet, secluded retreat or as a centrally located base to explore North Northumberland, or both!

“Secluded Cottage”

Reviewed 31 Oct 2020

Had an excellent stay at Fowberry Cottage. Wonderful location meant no traffic noise but within easy reach of lots to do. The cottage itself was very comfortable and warm. The small kitchen was more than adequate for cooking with the pantry providing extra space. The garden was great for the dogs (although empty bird feeders meant we had no visiting wildlife). Access to the estate was a big plus for us, giving our dogs the chance to go wild through the wilderness which must have once been quite beautiful. Whilst we only saw a grey squirrel, we also encountered deer, a fox, an owl and a huge murmuration during our stay. We have rented many holiday cottages both in the UK and abroad, and whilst this is up there with some of the best in terms of location, and comfort, it is the first time we have not had any kind of welcome pack, not even a bottle of milk! Craig was very good at communicating via email, although as he lives over 100 miles away is not exactly on hand for any issues you may have. Overall would I recommend this cottage? Most definitely yes.
