“The Pumphouse is clean inside, but that's all. Very disappointing - don't waste your money staying here.”

Reviewed 8 Sep 2018

When you drive into the Pumphouse, you are surrounded by old rusted metal frames with ripped and shredded plastic covering, dozens of them; overgrown weeds some as tall as the metal frames; old rusted equipment and rusted industrial bins - the place looks like an abandoned garbage tip. It's certainly not a flourishing business as advertised. The accommodation is tiny, one step above a caravan. From the front door you look straight into a very narrow bathroom and toilet facing the door. You'll need to walk sideways to fit in. One step to the left is the kitchen/lounge. The lounge itself is tiny with a small coffee table squashed at the end and tv perched facing sideways. No way could you sit on the lounge and turn 90 degrees sideways to watch the tv. The walls are so thin, we could hear the people next door cutting the food on their plates and scraping utensils, to say nothing of overhearing the conversation. Neighbours had taken the two small portable clothes dryers, so we had to hang our clothes on the dirty cobweb coated plastic chairs, as we hadn't packed any cleaning products with us for this trip. We also tried to hang clothes on the dirty fence and door handles. This was after using the inefficient dryer. The shower was terrible so we had to have baths, but make sure you get in first as there is very little hot water. As a nice little welcome, there was a small boxed plain sponge cake on special from the local supermarket. Seriously? Don't bother. This place should not be on the trip advisor listing. It seems to us that it's a cheap money making exercise, all boxes ticked (but not honestly). Having said that, the bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean.

Response from the owner Thank you for your review which we would like to take the opportunity to respond to, as it is disappointing and surprising to read. Our accommodation is located on a working nursery, which is being developed and diversifying in other ways, from facing the challenging times of agriculture today. This would explain the ‘rusted industrial bin’ you refer to, which is clearly labelled ‘recycle skip’ that is currently being used to responsibly dispose of building materials. We offer onsite support with our accommodation, along with contact numbers for any problems. As a result, we could have provided additional clothes driers, as the two provided were in use, along with addressing any issues with the new drier, such as emptying the condensation drawer after it is used to make it more efficient. Similarly with the shower and hot water, this is the first time we have heard of any problems, but it wasn’t drawn to our attention at the time. Our accommodation is assessed yearly by Visit Britain, where we fit very comfortably within the Three Star rating for Self Catering accommodation, along with always being highly commended for our cleanliness, which you have experienced. To achieve and maintain this rating, we provide good quality, comfortable furniture throughout our accommodation, including non-plastic garden furniture. The images we provide of our accommodation, as shown in our listing, show what can be expected and give the idea of room size. In regards to our listing on Trip Advisor, we have many positive reviews for our accommodation and can only apologise that we did not meet your expectations.
