Description from owner

Description

In the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty this cottage in West Marden offers real country living with modern up to date facilities. From the gate, walk straight onto a myriad of footpaths leading in various directions, all with beautiful vistas. The area abounds with wildlife, including deer, badgers, buzzards and red kites. There are also many varieties of owls in the area and they are a delight to listen to in the early evening.

Although the West Marden surroundings are the countryside at its best, there are two fully stocked and excellent village stores within a short drive, plus easy access to the main cities of Chichester and Portsmouth and all the attractions they offer. Inside the property, exposed wooden beams offset the recently refurbished interior of this well-equipped, attractive accommodation. No attention to detail has been overlooked, from the pretty patchwork quilts in the bedrooms, to the authentic middle eastern rugs on the floors and the solid oak doors.

Further details

A High chair is available for guests use. Please advise at the time of booking. There is a washing machine for guests use and a freezer for any cold foods you wish to store. Milk, coffee, tea, a bottle of wine and fresh flowers await your arrival. We like to welcome guests personally between 3.00 and 5.00, but do let us know of your travel plans and we can accommodate them.

Further details indoors

The favourite room, we are told by all our guests, is the conservatory which is a real suntrap, opening out onto the lawned garden and terrace. For your relaxation there is a sofa and two armchairs and a large coffee table, plus a wide screen TV. Sitting here you will immediately see why we have renamed the cottage Downsview. There's always something interesting to see.

The open plan kitchen that leads to the conservatory has all the modern conveniences you would expect, including plenty of granite work top, ceramic hob, built under oven and dishwasher. The keen cooks can knock up a quick snack to eat al fresco on the patio, or a full meal for serious dining if preferred. Alternatively, the village pub is within easy walking distance (three minutes) and serves food in the bar or the restaurant. The lounge/dining area has a dining table which seats 4 whilst the lounge has a comfy double sofa with solid wood coffee tables for each chair. The built in dresser has a good supply of books, magazines, DVD's and tourist information, along with binoculars for deer and bird spotting. The whole ground floor is tiled, topped by a large Persian rug to add to the character of the room. Step outside the patio door onto the terrace for your morning breakfast or evening glass of wine. Upstairs there is a wide, bright and airy wood beamed landing, with rooflights and a chest of drawers. At each end of the landing are the double and twin bedrooms. The corridor and double bedroom has wood beams running along either side and rooflights east and west to create a light bright feel. All the upstairs doors are hand made from oak and give the cottage a rustic charm. Both bedrooms have bedside cupboards and Persian rugs beside the beds, whilst the tiled bathroom floor is supplemented by a deep pile bathmat. The twin bedroom overlooks the paddock and fields and is loved by all the children that visit for the fantastic views of the downs and wildlife (that's not the hosts!).

Further details outdoors

The accommodation has its own york stone patio opening from the large conservatory with a table, four chairs and sun parasol. There is also a BBQ for summer evenings; home cooking. Guests have their own lawned garden with views over the fields Safe, off-road parking is right outside the front door.

“Outstanding”

Reviewed 25 Jul 2022

Cannot rate highly enough. Well equipped, immaculate cottage in a stunningly beautiful & idyllic location. We stayed 4 nights as a base for our day trips to Goodwood, Butlins, Portsmouth & Littlehampton. All within an easy drive, 20-30 mins away. Cathy & Ranjit are lovely hosts, kind, friendly and welcoming, with lots of information about the area and places to visit. We had such a lovely welcome and to be greeted with beautiful flowers, fresh eggs, wine... and milk in the fridge made us feel at home straight away. We had beautiful sunshine for our stay, so it was great to be able to use the bbq and gazebo out in the garden. The layout of the cottage was perfect for our family. Our two boys 7&9 had a lovely room overlooking the fields and horses and we were just along the landing in an equally comfortable bedroom. Beautiful dark skies at night with no light pollution at all. We all slept really well. Victoria Inn is a 2 minute walk down the road, where we had a bite to eat the first night. Kids loved the squid! Large pub garden. Also a dart board inside. Thank you Cathy & Ranjit, this is a great start to the summer holidays!
