What Past Guests Are Saying
Clean cozy house with a friendly host
My spouse and I spent three days at Hale Kawehi as part of our "baby-moon" trip and we had some truly unforgettable time there! The house is beautiful, spacious and clean, full of aloha spirit and surrounded by paradise-like gardens and balconies. It gave us a unique opportunity to experience the real Hawaiian living and yet have everything provided that we needed for our perfect vacation. Delicious breakfast was waiting for us in the fridge every morning and the kitchen was equipped with all the necessary things that we needed for the occasional cooking that we did during the day. A huge thank you to host, Kawehi, for a very warm welcome and for providing all the useful tips about Hilo as well as Hawaii in general and its culture! We truly enjoyed our stay at Hale Kawehi and hope to return there soon!
Paradise in Hilo, Big Island
Kawehi's home is like a dream house on paradise. A truly Hawaiian experience compare to those high end resorts. The house is conveniently located close to Hilo downtown, 30 mins away from national volcano park. It is an islandy cozy home, decorated with lovely Hawaiian touches in every corner. Tropical garden with birds singing in the morning, frogs chirping in the evenings. Kawehi is wonderfully warm and pleasant; she totally makes you feel at home and well cared for. She leaves instructions for check-in, list of recommended restaurants. Her fresh papayas from the garden for breakfast is incredibly juicy and sweet. The cat Mr. Princess is a great company while eating breakfast on the patio, he will try to sneak into the house, so keep the doors closed. She gave us valuable local knowledge, Hawaiian culture and tips on traveling. Kawehi even offer me some Lau Lau's (Hawaiian dish) when I mentioned I wanted to try. My stay at Kawehi's home was absolutely magical, an amazing house and a fantastic host. She is so caring, makes you feel like family, I had a really good time talking to her. I highly recommend Hale Kawehi to anyone visiting Hilo, next time I visit Hilo, I will love to stay with Kawehi again. Mahalo.
My private paradise
Maybe I am not the right person for a review...I have to admit to being prejudiced. That's because I fell in love, the very moment I arrived: with the lovely old-style house and terrace, the exotic garden, the delicate breakfast, the discrete cats, not to mention the landlady: the most wonderful B&B-hostess; I have ever met :-)
HI on Hawaii
Vintage Hawaiian aloha
Staying at Hale Kawehi is like coming home. You are enveloped with aloha the moment you arrive. This vintage Hawaiian cottage is the picture of what life in Hilo is all about - very calm and peaceful but also chock full of interesting things. When you walk through the gate, you are enveloped in a lush tropical setting. I adore the screen door entry and the wrap-around covered lanai! The windows are open on all sides to the breeze, and it's a luxury to lie in bed and be lulled to sleep by the coquis and the rain. Kawehi is a very generous and gracious hostess. She has thought of everything you might want or need to make your stay more comfortable. She provides a list of restaurants that she recommends. I followed her recommendations, and my personal favorite was Miyo's for healthful dinners of fish and veggies. Their eggplant is addictive. Kawehi also provided a yummy continental style breakfast of fresh home-grown papaya, muffins/bagels, juice and coffee - a very nice surprise for me. The house is located very close to downtown Hilo but is in a quiet neighborhood. It's the perfect place from which to launch your day trips, and it's a wonderful place to return to after a long day out and about. Do yourself a favor and don't over-schedule your visit to Hilo. A lot of what Hilo is about is just being there, and you can't do better to absorb the aloha of Hilo than to simply spend lots of time lazing around Hale Kawehi.
