“Escape To an absolutely Tranquil and Comforting Retreat” I loved it here! It is the best place I have stayed in the 26 years since moving to Big Island. It is beautiful, clean, new and has everything you need for a weekend or longer. Quiet village with hikes, biking, star gazing, music, great food, yoga, unique and special. Watch the volcano glow at night and catch up on all the reading you have been missing. You can't beat the price or seclusion. The deep soaking tub was the perfect touch. I hate to say so many good things, I may not get the reservation I want in the future, but it is worth the time. I would stay here and visit Hilo for shopping or Palace theatre, Mexican food at Reubens, it is superior to any hotels in Hilo town and a 30 min drive. Enjoy!

Volcano Mountain Haven in Hawaii

Volcano house

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 2

“Great stay in lush, beautiful settings” Right from the start I knew it would be a great stay. The property page said Candice and Richard usually reply with 3 hours and even though I sent in reservation at about 10-11am EST, it was confirmed within hours, given the time difference I was immediately impressed. After that Candice provided great information about the area and where to eat and even left my wife a nice jar of local honey (I had told her we were going to hi for my her birthday). The location is very quiet as it is off the beaten path, the cottage was immaculate, and the grounds were beautiful We spent three nights here as a base for exploring Volcano National Park and the surroundings; there was a booklet of things to do and places to eat that took the mystery out of an unknown town, very helpful. The only regret is that we got flew into Kona in the afternoon and got to the house so late we didn't get the opportunity to meet Candice or Richard. Though they were immediately available by phone when I had a bit of hard time finding the right home in the dark. If/when we revisit this area, I would definitely stay again. Thanks for the great accomodations and helpful hints!

MAILE TREEHOUSE "Magical.. Absolutely Spectacular"

Volcano house

1 bedroom / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 4

“A lush and magical retreat” March 27-30 What a treat to stay here! We thoroughly enjoyed eating breakfast on the lanai, listening to the bird song, wandering through the garden admiring flowers and detecting whimsey, and seeing all the beautiful aesthetic touches throughout the house. This place lives up to its reputation. Barbara and Del

Exotic Treehouse at Kilauea Volcano on Big Island

Volcano house

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 2

“What a beautiful, serene, magical place!” Wow! That was a treat! This is the classiest treehouse I have ever seen, not to mention romantic! I cannot wait to bring my fiance to this sweet and special place. Situated above a lava tube in the midst of the tropical rainforest, this spot is pure magic. The trail leading to the treehouse smells of sweet ginger in bloom, and Gail has done a lovely job of planting orchids and other flowers to add color and enchantment to this already exquisite slice of paradise. I had my 8 month old baby with me and she loved playing with the solitaire di venezia marble game while we watched the volcano update on the DVD player. The bed was like a cloud and the hot tub on the lanai was divine!!! This was a fabulous place to stay and I would recommend the Exotic Treehouse on the Volcano to everyone I know for romantic getaways, vacations with the girls, family adventures, or anyone who wants to have a unique Big Island experience. It is so close to the Volcano National Park, which is ever-dynamic; we got to see the red hot glow of the crater at night under the milky way and meteor showers! So awesome! Robert and Gail are excellent hosts who make your stay warm and accommodating. Check it out! You will not be sorry you did and you will never forget this experience. Mahalo and aloha!

“Superb location and comforts” Richard goes out of his way to welcome and accomadate his guests. So close to the park and all points of interest, but the cottage feels like you're isolated on a private reserve. The cottage is spotless and maintained very well. Volcano BigTree Sanctuary, hot tub/fireplace/sauna

Volcano house

“True Sanctuary” Wow!! If you want to get away from it all in a luxurious peaceful setting, this is the place you are looking for. When we arrived, we were stunned with, first, the location the house is in and, second, all of the amenities with the house. The house is located in an ohia rain forest. It is absolutely quiet, except for the lovely sound of birds. There is a wonderful hot tub outside, along with an outside shower and a Finnish sauna. There is also a very cool glass greenhouse full of Nepenthes plants of all shapes and sizes. These plants, I believe, are related to Venus Flytraps. There is also a covered fire pit with available wood already chopped for your convenience. There is also a beautiful koi pond with covered seating. The owners also provide fish food to feed the koi. Magnificent ohia trees abound. I believe one of the trees on the property is probably one of the oldest ohias on the island...magnificent. Inside the house, you will want for nothing. On the first level is the kitchen fully equipped and living area, complete with sound system and fireplace, plus a bathroom that exits out onto the lanai. Upstairs are two bedrooms, each with their own bath and also a den area. There is a lanai upstairs as well. We happen to live on the island and know what is available in this area. This house is top-notch. If you are planning on spending any time at all at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this is the perfect spot to relax after a day of hiking. You are just outside of the village of Volcano, which has several wonderful restaurants and art galleries. Great location, great amenities, great ambience and great value!! P.S. -- we managed to set off the alarm and the owners were responsive within a minute or two.

About Volcano

Not surprisingly, the volcanoes are what bring people to Volcano year after year. The area is also known for its beautiful beaches as well as its cultural attractions, shops, and traditional Hawaiian restaurants. The majority of the restaurants and shops in Volcano can be found along Main Street, while Sixth Street is the place to go for amazing volcano views.

Be sure to make time for some of these other must-see attractions and destinations during your vacation in Volcano:

  • Thomas A. Jaggar Museum: This geological and historic museum provides unique insight into the volcanic history of the town.
  • Akatsuka Orchid Gardens: These beautiful Japanese gardens are a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon.
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: To see the famous volcanoes in town up close, visit this park that has guided tours and historical exhibits.

Watch movies from some of Hawaii's premier filmmakers at the Big Island Film Festival in May, watch the largest hula festival in the world every May, known as the Merry Monarch Festival, or listen to live performances of traditional Hawaiian music at the Puna Music Festival in April.

A vacation rental is the preferred option for those staying in Volcano. Book a luxury villa within walking distance of Volcano's shops and restaurants, or rent a lavish condo with volcano views from right out your bedroom window.

Volcano Singing Forest Cottage Hot tub & fireplace
Loved the cottage and hot tub!

This cottage was perfectly located for touring Volcano National Park. We were glad we brought rain jackets and warm clothes since it is much cooler here than the other side of the Big Island. It was great to be so close to the park so we could spend the day then go back at night to see the volcano. The kitchen was very clean and well-appointed. We did not cook but thanks for the coffee! The bed was comfy and the bathroom and shower are gorgeous with plenty of towels. We especially enjoyed the hot tub on the covered deck on the cool and rainy evenings. Thanks for a great stay!see more
Tsugi Teahouse at Volcano Hot Tub/ fireplace150
Exquisite accommodations, tasteful decor, private and relaxing, would stay again.

We were the first persons to occupy this just completed Teahouse style cottage. We stayed just over two weeks. There is utmost privacy behind the bamboo thatched gate. We did have a family of Chinese pheasants stroll around the perimeter of the grounds. I would see them around 7 am when I was sitting in the hot tub drinking my morning coffee. The cottage and its outside surroundings are very magical. Many evenings sitting in the hot tub, there appeared to be many glistening lights from the moonlight reflecting on the water droplets on the foliage!see more
Ohana House, Volcano's Popular Rainforest Retreat
This house was, without a doubt, the perfect family vacation home, even for our large family of 8.

The Ohana house at Volcano was an absolutely perfect match for our family and our 5 day stay on the Big Island. We came focused on exploring the east side of the Big Island and had a great time rambling around the Volcanos Nat'l Park and exploring Hilo and Honokaa. The house was very family-friendly, and included plenty of little kid-essentials like a high-chair and a playpen, very much appreciated by our 3-year old. The main room (shown in the primary photo) was great place for our three generations to hang out and converse. The altitude (~3500 ft) ensured that the evenings were cool and helped everyone relax after hiking and exploring. The kitchen was perfectly sized to support the mutual entertaining that the four families did. The location for exploring the National Park could not be better, and we spent three days there. The fact that the volcano was erupting both into the sea as well as at the summit was a bonus! In summary, we had a great time in every aspect of our visit, and would highly recommend this house for anyone who wants to explore the eastern side of the Big Island.see more
Volcano Mountain Haven in Hawaii
A peaceful mountain haven indeed

A comfortable, cozy vacation home in a serene, quiet environment. Thoughtfully equipped with a host of useful and convenient amenities, this is a private vacation home shared with you. The hosts make sure you have all the information you need and find help if required. The location couldn't be better to explore Volcanoes National Park and the ~3000 ft of altitude make for comfortably cool temperatures. A place for wildlife rather than nightlife - perfect for me!see more
