Craftsman Garden Bungalow Home, Asian-Inspired Tropical Gardens/ Spa

Hilo house

2 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 4

“Even more beautiful than the photos!” The only way to describe this house is to use superlatives. The house is so very beautiful and the gardens are just stunning. It is one of those rare properties where the pictures (which are gorgeous, right?) don't do the house and gardens justice. We have rented properties all around the world and this has to be one of our absolute favorites, and without question it is the cleanest and best maintained property we have ever stayed at. We spent a few nights here and then a few more in Kona but it was in Hilo where we felt the spirit of Hawaii the most. Don't let the rain scare you off - this side of the island is not to be missed. But back to the house, on top of all I mentioned, we also found it to be the best equipped house we have ever rented. Sherron has thought of absolutely everything you could possibly need - from beach towels to a rice cooker to saran wrap - and so you have one less thing to think about on vacation. Absolutely a+++!

“Paradise within Paradise” Sherron, you are an amazing woman! Thank you for making our Hilo vacation relaxing and comfortable with every imaginable amenities included. From the umbrellas ( rain, rain and more rain), the flashlights (cave exploration) and especially the furo ( aching muscles from karate). We enjoyed your tranquil botanical garden with all the beautiful and exotic plants abound including the coqui frogs serenading us at night. But I'll always remember your thoughtfulness and graciousness as our Karate Ohana monopolized your time. Mahalo and we will return. Nothing compares to this home away from home! Fondly, Joe & Felyda

Beach, Whales, Surf, Water Falls, 2 Miles to Hilo

Hilo house

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 2

“Honeymoon in paradise!” My husband and I stayed in this magnificent house for 7 nights while enjoying the Big Island for our honeymoon. It's location in Hilo was the perfect spot for the relaxing time we were looking for. We were able to explore the whole island with this home as our base. We visited the observatory on Mauna Kea, and experienced the stars in a new way. Hiking through the volcano national park is a must, with a stop at the lava tube exhibit. We were also blown away by the view of the ocean from anywhere in the front of the house. My favorite time of day was sitting on the front porch watching the sunrise each morning. It was spectacular. We would to keep this home our best kept secret, but it's too awesome not to share. We hope to return again and again.

Hilo Country Cottage

Hilo cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 6

“Lovely” This cottage was a surprise. The outside doesn't give the greatest impression, but the interior is very well finished. It's also quite spacious for the size! The furnishings were lovely and obviously very well cared for. Few things: The sofa bed in the lounge could do with instructions on how to pull out. No kettle: we like to drink hot tea and had to boil water in a pan, which made pouring difficult. But these are only minor points. The owner was quick to answer any queries and sorted out a booking issue in rapid time. If we stay in Hilo again we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. 1 final thing - beware of the roosters in the area which love to wake up around 5.30am!

“All the good things previous reviewers have said” This house was a wonderful refuge after a hard day of touring and hiking. I only wish we had left more time in our schedule to sit on the lanai and enjoy the peaceful view. Kitchen was well equipped for cooking meals at home.

SUZYS TROPICAL RETREAT STAY 6 NT & GET THE 7TH FRE

Hilo house

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 6

“Peaceful Paradise and amazing Ocean Experiences!” We were looking for the perfect, peaceful ocean paradise and we found it at Suzy's Tropical Retreat. The location is perfect...close enough to Hilo to be very convenient but not so close that you feel like you're in the middle of the city. Suzy's place is located in a quiet and beautiful neighborhood with amazing ocean views. Local beach access is close by and the scenery is amazing. We are a family of four and this rental suited our needs beautifully. It is new and very clean, tastefully decorated and very comfortable. It has all the amenities you'll need to make yourself at home and the big yard was a huge plus for my two young kids to play in. The deck is awesome and a great place to watch the sunsets and sip a Mai Tai. I highly recommend this rental. The value is so so amazing you'll feel like you've found the best kept secret on the island. We'll definitely be back again soon.

“The best absolutely the most FUN place I have ever stayed.” I truly enjoyed myself here and was able to really relax. Keith was very accommodating and Chelsea cooked the best dinner the last night I was there outdoors on the open fire. I wish I had taken more pictures and I hope I get a chance to go back someday and enjoy more of what the place has to offer. I have great memories of my stay here! Thank Keith and Chelsea!

Lopaka's Family Lodge in Hilo

Hilo house

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 4

“wonderful experience” I can not say enough about our stay at Lopaka's Lodge in Hilo. From the time we arrived until we left we were treated like royalty. The house was perfect in every way. It was just the right size for a couple and was furnished very nicely. Everything that was described in the listing on vrbo was correct and more. The bed was one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in and the location of the house is perfect for exploring the east side of the Big Island. It is hard to adequately describe just how nice this property is or to single out just one best thing about our stay. If I had to narrow it down to one thing I guess it would have to be the owner, Bev. My husband got sick on our very first day there and Bev took care of us as if we were family. We came as strangers, but we left as friends. If you are looking for the perfect place to stay on the Big Island, Lopaka's Family Lodge is the place.

Ocean front condo next to Reeds Bay in Hilo, HI

Hilo apartment

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 4

“Cozy, comfortable and just right!” This Banyan Drive location and condo were perfect for what we wanted. We loved the view and the proximity to the water. Shops, restaurants, and recreational rentals were right around the corner. Old Town Hilo was a short drive down the ocean front drive. It was very close to the airport. Easy to navigate by foot or by car.

Maunaloa Shores 405

Hilo house

“Great stay” We were a little nervous when we saw the exterior of the building; it seemed a bit run down. The condo suite however was great! The view was phenomenal and the location was very convenient for us. The only things that would improve the suite would be a full-length mirror (maybe on the back of the bedroom door?) and a chest of drawers or something to put clothing away. Sadly, we weren't able to use the lanai due to the incessant smell of cigarette smoke coming from below or beside the suite. There also seemed to be a couple of burns on the couch. Very well-appointed kitchen, lots of towels, comfy bedding. Bring earplugs to block out the coqui frogs and you'll have a great sleep! We would definitely consider staying here again. Thanks!

Hale Kawehi Guesthouse in quaint downtown Hilo. No Cleaning Fee

Hilo house

1 bedroom / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 2

“Stay at Hale Kawehi!” Stay at Hale Kawehi and you will never want to stay anywhere else. It is completely authentic old style Hawai'i and feels gracious and comfortable. There are 3 beautiful sitting areas outside and 3 inside. There is a wet bar, house wines, juice, jelly, butter, and bagels in the fridge. The kitchen is very well appointed, centrally located, and open to the rest of house for those who want to do their own cooking. There are beautiful stained glass windows - designed and made by the owner - in almost every room and literally hundreds of little details and collections to enjoy - the clock collection is particularly interesting. The mosaic inlays in the kitchen and wet-bar area were designed by the owner Some of the collections are from far-flung parts of the globe so you sense that the house is not only Hawaiian but a place that embraces the world. Almost everything here is an art object of some sort. The little green vines stenciled on the white frame of the front veranda enhance the garden-feeling of it. There are dozens of helpful notes in the house to guide the guest. If you are a TV watcher, there are several big, flat-screen TVs in the house. You can hear the traffic a little but the street is not busy it is not an annoyance. There is a nice cat, "Mr. Princess", who is friendly but not bothersome. At nite there are little chirping frogs at night that sound like birds to me - some people don't like the sound. This is a safe place for anyone - there is a secure gate with either key or combination entry and a tall fence for privacy and security. You will seldom, if ever, need fans as the temperature is a little warm in the day and a little cool at nite - you will want a cover in bed. There are big expanses of screen to allow the air to flow freely. Kawehi will be happy to tell you about the house and collections but will not intrude unless you ask. Beauty, hospitality, and comfort. You will always be glad you stayed at Hale Kawehi - I certainly am!

About Hilo

×

Hilo is brimming with markets, sandy coasts, and tropical groves. The region, home to the University of Hawaii, is known for its spunky taste of Hawaiian culture. Come here to enjoy great dining and entertainment, take in traditional Hawaiian art, or go on an outdoor adventure.

Some of the attractions you will definitely want to check out include:

  • Rainbow Falls: This 80-foot waterfall covers the entrance of an ancient cave rumored to be the mother of the demigod Maui. It is an exquisite natural wonder to behold.
  • The Boiling Pots: Observe as streaming water that appears to be boiling makes its way through a collection of lava tubes and rocks.
  • Banyan Drive: This tree-lined street runs along the shores of Hilo. It is a spot known for having celebrities, adventurers, religious leaders, and politicians honored by planting trees along the walkway.
  • The Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo: Wildlife lovers will appreciate this one-of-a-kind attraction located in a rainforest. It offers rare glimpses into the lives of many endangered animals and is a photo opportunity not to be missed.
  • Onizuka Center for International Astronomy: Stargazers will find this attraction heavenly. Visitors can watch a presentation on the night sky and view a variety of objects through telescopes. There are also onsite guides to help you identify some spectacular sights.
  • Lyman Museum: This museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian and relays the history of the Hawaiian Islands. Exhibits feature the unique flora and fauna of the area as well as highlight the area's volcanic origins.

Some of the most extraordinary architecture can also be viewed in Hilo. A Hilo castle is a spectacular sight to see and is often the backdrop for Hilo weddings. Many engaged couples flock to the area for their storybook day, but culture lovers also appreciate some of the more innovative attractions Hilo has to offer. The Hilo Tsunami Museum is one such example.

For your stay in the Hilo District, book a vacation rental in some of the most breathtaking surroundings on Earth. Beautiful ocean vistas and sunsets come free of charge with any condo, whether you are in an apartment rental downtown or situated by the beach.
