“Stay at Hale Kawehi!”
Stay at Hale Kawehi and you will never want to stay anywhere else. It is completely authentic old style Hawai'i and feels gracious and comfortable. There are 3 beautiful sitting areas outside and 3 inside. There is a wet bar, house wines, juice, jelly, butter, and bagels in the fridge. The kitchen is very well appointed, centrally located, and open to the rest of house for those who want to do their own cooking. There are beautiful stained glass windows - designed and made by the owner - in almost every room and literally hundreds of little details and collections to enjoy - the clock collection is particularly interesting. The mosaic inlays in the kitchen and wet-bar area were designed by the owner Some of the collections are from far-flung parts of the globe so you sense that the house is not only Hawaiian but a place that embraces the world. Almost everything here is an art object of some sort. The little green vines stenciled on the white frame of the front veranda enhance the garden-feeling of it. There are dozens of helpful notes in the house to guide the guest. If you are a TV watcher, there are several big, flat-screen TVs in the house. You can hear the traffic a little but the street is not busy it is not an annoyance. There is a nice cat, "Mr. Princess", who is friendly but not bothersome. At nite there are little chirping frogs at night that sound like birds to me - some people don't like the sound. This is a safe place for anyone - there is a secure gate with either key or combination entry and a tall fence for privacy and security. You will seldom, if ever, need fans as the temperature is a little warm in the day and a little cool at nite - you will want a cover in bed. There are big expanses of screen to allow the air to flow freely. Kawehi will be happy to tell you about the house and collections but will not intrude unless you ask. Beauty, hospitality, and comfort. You will always be glad you stayed at Hale Kawehi - I certainly am!
Response from the owner Thankk you for your visit. It is always a pleasure hosting guests like you. I made a new friend. Mahalo and a hui hou.
“Authentic, laid-back, non-touristy Hawaiian experience.”
My husband and I just spent a week at Hale Kawehi. We loved every minute of it. Full disclosure: we both love cats and this charming Hawaiian home came with an especially loving tabby cat who greeted us every time we returned from an outing as soon as he discovered he was welcome. The house is much larger than the average guest house. It is charming and homey. It has a fully equipped kitchen and two covered patios where breakfast is a treat. Its location is central and easy to find as well as having easy access to local shops and restaurants. We were looking for a relaxed, non-touristy visit to get a sense of every day Hawaiian life and we achieved that goal well beyond what we might have hoped. Kawehi is a kind, generous and knowledgeable hostess. Lucky are those who choose Hale Kawehi. Anne Kass
Response from the owner Aloha from Hawaii. Mr Princess is doing great, thanks to your advice. It was a wonderful visit and you were great guests. I hope to keep in touch and someday host you again. Mahalo and a hui hou.
“Excellent Value for an authentic Hawaii Experience!”
My cousin and I stayed in Hale Kawehi for two nights. Our host could not have been more warm and welcoming. Kawehi made it clear she was available to answer any of our questions or provide advice; otherwise we had total privacy. Juice, milk, bagels, and eggs were left in the refrigerator each morning. The house is very spacious, with lots of rooms to explore. It is filled with antique treasures and unique, one-of-a-kind objects. The outside garden area is enchanting. There are also several outdoor seating areas; all lovely. Mr. Princess is the most friendly and loving cat I've ever met. He was a pleasure to have around outside. I had two issues which I feel the need to share. First, the local coqui frogs are quite noisy at night. I was fine because I had earplugs, but you should be aware of this ahead of time. Second, there was an odor of cat inside, although guests are asked not to let Mr. Princess in the house. Since we mainly slept there, it wasn't an issue. It might be, though, if you plan to spend a lot of time inside the house. All in all, my experience was positive and I'm very glad I stayed here.
Response from the owner Aloha Nancy. I am glad you enjoyed Hale Kawehi. Yes, Hilo and Puna have croqui frogs, Some guests like them and some do not. But they are now part of the Hawaiian environment. Both you and your cousin did say you were extremely sensitive to cats. Mr. Princess lives with me and is part of the family. I did mention that it is stated in my listing that if you are sensitive to pets to consider this before booking and you acknowledged reading this. He is an outside cat that comes to visit guests. He comes and goes and is very friendly. Because this was a major concern for both of you immediately upon arrival when you saw Mr. Princess, I did suggest alternate arrangements but you felt it would be fine and I did ask you about any concerns with Mr. Princess when you checked out and you said everything was wonderful!!!!!! If you were highly sensitive, as you said you were, then perhaps you should not have booked here. I have had other highly sensitive guests and they have had no issues about Mr Princess or odor inside the house. A host can have the best accommodation, but it is hard to please everyone, and, unfortunately hosts are not given the same opportunity to review and rate their guests. Unfortunately, I had a less than 5 star review because of Mr. Princess and the croqui frogs which I have no control over. Mahalo for sharing.
“Quiet accessible neighborhood”
Kawahi is a very gracious, knowledgeable, and friendly host. She provided us with much information about local shopping, culture, geography, and activities. Her home is in a quiet residential area with room to park your vehicle off the street. We didn't spend much daytime there as there is so much to do and experience in the Hilo area. The inside of the unit is as pictured with lots of dishes and a good gas range. Kewahi introduced us to lau lau, which is a specially cooked pork dish that I would kill for. She also explained lots of little tidbits about local cultural traits of the people and historical accounts of the area which was very helpful as we traveled around the island. Yes, we would stay with her again.
“A charming place”
My wife and I stayed at Hale Kawehi for a few nights. It's a perfect vacation place for visiting Hilo, or exploring, if it's your first time in town. It would be wonderful for Merrie Monarch. The house is comfortable and attractive and very interestingly decorated. The lanai is my favorite part. We'll definitely return.
“House full of surprises”
Nice place to stay in Hilo. I agree with all the reviews here (even with the security issue...Anybody that can jump the fence can get in the house). It is an amazing house, an alibaba's cave. If you don't care too much about the cleanliness, you will like it. We had to wash the dishes before using them but we loved the garden, the birds, the cats, etc. It is much more friendly than a hotel room or a condo.
Response from the owner Aloha. Sorry you had a problem with dishes. The dishes are on open cabinets and sometimes wind comes in and dust settles on them overnight. That could have been the problem. But there is a dishwasher and the house rules say to keep kitchen in order and to wash dishes. There is an elaborate security system and added hotel-type locks in the hallway entering the bedroom. So the jumping over the 10 foot fence that completely surrounds the house that has a well-lighted street, plus with the security system, it would be difficult. This is not New York or Chicago. It is a very safe neighborhood that is right in town and a half mile away from police department. There was a nice complimentary breakfast left for this guest which is not part of the rental. So as far as value and service, it t is one of the best in Hilo for what you get. This is Hawaii and hotels rooms are $250-400 per nite. Hope my explanation helps. Coming to peoples homes is not like going to hotel rooms and I really do care about my guests. Mahalo.
This was a wonderful base for exploring the Hilo area. The house is spacious and very well-equipped. It is very well set up for spending lots of time on the spacious and private lanai, which is just outside the kitchen doors and surrounded by Kawehi's lovely garden. (There's also a lovely verendah around the side of the house, with lots of comfie chairs.)We like good places to read at night, and there were several here, including a marvellous chair built for two. It has the feel of what it is, a family home that is full of many interesting historical objects. But as others have noted, the best thing about this rental is Kawehi herself. She is warm, engaging, and very generous. The fridge was full of papayas and bagels, and when we needed advice on restaurants, beaches, etc. she had all sorts of local knowledge to share. We were glad we decided to spend some time on the east side. Hilo is close to the volcano and the wonderful botanical gardens, and the string of beach parks south of town are first rate. Thanks Kawehi - you made this a very special part of our travels, and we hope to be back to see you soon.
“We were comfortable and enjoyed the privacy.”
Kawehi had bagels, papaya and coffee for us each morning. She checked each morning if there was anything we wanted. The home is packed with interesting art work, sitting areas, and beautiful flowers. The twin beds were comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook easily. We found it easily with gps and were close to a grocery store.
“Clean cozy house with a friendly host”
My spouse and I spent three days at Hale Kawehi as part of our "baby-moon" trip and we had some truly unforgettable time there! The house is beautiful, spacious and clean, full of aloha spirit and surrounded by paradise-like gardens and balconies. It gave us a unique opportunity to experience the real Hawaiian living and yet have everything provided that we needed for our perfect vacation. Delicious breakfast was waiting for us in the fridge every morning and the kitchen was equipped with all the necessary things that we needed for the occasional cooking that we did during the day. A huge thank you to host, Kawehi, for a very warm welcome and for providing all the useful tips about Hilo as well as Hawaii in general and its culture! We truly enjoyed our stay at Hale Kawehi and hope to return there soon!
“Paradise in Hilo, Big Island”
Kawehi's home is like a dream house on paradise. A truly Hawaiian experience compare to those high end resorts. The house is conveniently located close to Hilo downtown, 30 mins away from national volcano park. It is an islandy cozy home, decorated with lovely Hawaiian touches in every corner. Tropical garden with birds singing in the morning, frogs chirping in the evenings. Kawehi is wonderfully warm and pleasant; she totally makes you feel at home and well cared for. She leaves instructions for check-in, list of recommended restaurants. Her fresh papayas from the garden for breakfast is incredibly juicy and sweet. The cat Mr. Princess is a great company while eating breakfast on the patio, he will try to sneak into the house, so keep the doors closed. She gave us valuable local knowledge, Hawaiian culture and tips on traveling. Kawehi even offer me some Lau Lau's (Hawaiian dish) when I mentioned I wanted to try. My stay at Kawehi's home was absolutely magical, an amazing house and a fantastic host. She is so caring, makes you feel like family, I had a really good time talking to her. I highly recommend Hale Kawehi to anyone visiting Hilo, next time I visit Hilo, I will love to stay with Kawehi again. Mahalo.
