BALESTRATE: Balestrate (Sicilian: Sicciara) is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Palermo in the Italian region Sicily, located about 40 km southwest of Palermo. It has a population of almost 6.000 and an area of 3.9 km². You can enjoy its cheap pizzerie and restaurants, daily free shows on the main square, beautiful sandy beaches.

Balestrate is exactly between Palermo and Trapani, in the center of the Gulf of Castellamare. During the Summer season many foreign tourists come from the colder climates seeking the warm water and sun.

History: "Quantum a litore maris infra terram per factum balistae protenderit..." With these words, reported in a decree of the king Federico of Aragon, 1307, begins the history of Balestrate. THAT DECREE provided that all the coastal territory of Sicily, from an imaginary shooting Balestra shoot from the bath drier, belonged to direct dominion of the king.
