“A taste of local Sicilian life!”

Reviewed 22 Oct 2013

The Bolthole is a great spot in a lovely small town in Sicily. We stayed slightly out of season so got a real flavour for local life in Caccamo. It was a great place to come back to after day trips to Cefalu, Castelbuono, Solunto etc. The accommodation is great with everything you need. We really enjoyed sitting on the terrace with the fantastic view of the surrounding mountains. Just to note that you will need a car to stay here.

“Excellent value for money”

Reviewed 13 Jun 2013

First and foremost, this is by far the best value for money accommodation we have used anywhere. Ever. We used it as a base to see more parts of Sicily. This little town house is no frills accommodation which has everything you need, and is situated in a fantastic location. The roof terrace is somewhere we spent a lot of time, the view from here is just stunning, looking over the oldest part of the town below the castle out to the farm land and mountains beyond, while listening to the huge range of weird and wonderful various church bells. The bedrooms are surprisingly cool in warm weather, so don't let the lack of air conditioning put you off. The village of Caccamo is quite impressive, it's all very old and traditional, and a place that it's easy to spend a lot of time just wandering around, through all the narrow winding staircases and alley ways. We used the two closest restaurants, and the nearby takeaway, all of which were excellent. Our visit was a little outside the main tourist season, so it may not be a true reflection of how things are in general, but we found very few people spoke English, so take your phrase book and learn some essentials before you go. The more coastal villages are better set up for tourism, but it's nice to be away from that in Caccamo. A car is essential here, we hired one for the full two weeks. There was always a place to park around the foot of the castle, though in busier times I could see there being some issues there. Driving in Sicily is not for the feint hearted, and learning the rules of their roads really doesn't seem to make any difference, as nobody appears to follow them! One thing I was a little disappointed with, was the litter. It appears that the general Sicilian refuse collection services need reviewed, as everywhere we went (outside of Caccamo, which isn't as badly affected) was full to over flowing with rubbish and fly tipping. All of the beaches we visited were well cared for, but the water sports centre just a few minutes outside the village was closed and very run down looking. Two very enjoyable weeks, from a perfectly located base.

“Excellent bolthole in family orientated beautiful town”

Reviewed 4 Feb 2013

We spent 5 very happy days here. The property is clean with a modern kitchen so cooking is easy if you don't want to eat out at the lovely restaurants. Kids are well loved here so there is never any bother with having them out with you. Our fave place was a lake nearby where, for a small fee, the kids could go out with canoes (clad in excellent life jackets) and pedaloes, even try waterskiing for the whole day. There are plenty of beaches and picturesque towns short car rides (30mins-60 mins) away. A car is a must but, it is an incredibly relaxing place and although the property isn't huge the kids( and ours were 5-8) can ramble around the town after a day out safely. You can even grill fish on the bbq on the little roof terrace and watch the sun go down overlooking the town. I aim to return again.

“Authentic Sicilian Location with spectacular views”

Reviewed 25 Jan 2013

We stayed here in July 2011 for 10 nights 30 year old man, 27 year old woman. 1 Girl - 7, 1 boy -4 The location is amazing. You are high up in the mountains with lots to see from the Boltholes balcony. Finding the bolthole was quite difficult once parking the car but I put this down to me not following the landlords clear instructions (I chose to park the car higher up and walk down with luggage) This mistake was not repeated. Caccomo lake is an amazing day out and only 3 mins by car and very reasonable pricing for peddalos, jetskiing, speedboat, horse riding. Caccamo is a very friendly town for all cultures and they have a great deal of respect for those with children. The Bolthole is a humble home that is clean and has all the facilities you need for an ideal stay. There was no TV when we went but that was a plus as it meant more quality time as a family. It is a rustic location with rockwork downstairs on the walls. Its not ideal if you have mobility issues (wheelchair access/buggys etc) as you need to park the car on the street below and walk through the amazing sicialian style homes to get to the bolthole. I will definitely return to the Bolthole as it was one of the best holidays so far and I have stayed in 5 star hotels (not that this is five star) but my expectations are quite high. My holiday history: Miami, Turkey, Egypt, South france, Dubai There is a local bar which has good music (sometimes live) and you can take kids in there. Lots of good qualty restaurants closeby that do not charge an arm and a leg Thank you for some great memories

“This gorgeous little cottage in rustic mountainous Sicily is the perfect antidote to city life.... A wonderful break!”

Reviewed 24 Jan 2013

We had an amazing time and felt like we were in the heart of Sicily, surrounded by fresh mountainous air, sunshine and glorious food! Sitting on the roof terrace eating delicious meals whilst gazing at the incredible view was an absolute joy, and the village itself has a lot to explore with its tiny cobbled streets and magnificent castle. We found some lovely beaches along the coast and Palermo is well worth a visit too. Sicily is welcoming and interesting with an incredible history and natural beauty and we would definitely like to come back and see more.

“Recommend for a memorable trip!”

Reviewed 20 Jan 2013

A lovely, homely place in the heart of the town with stunning views of the castle and surrounding mountains. Caccamo is a wonderful, traditional Sicilian town with great places to visit and things to see; the local restaurants and impressive castle are well worth a visit. The coast, beaches, local lake and other attractions are just a short drive away. A brilliant location to experience real Sicilian life and a perfect base from which to visit all the wonders of Sicily. I have stayed here twice and I plan to do so again in the future! Always an amazing experience and thoroughly recommend it for anybody wishing to feel at home in comfortable accommodation in a relaxing and friendly Sicilian town.
